Why was AdvertBan created?

I was unsatisfied by other existing ad blocking solutions such as AdBlock Plus, because they required non-trivial knowledge from users. For example, usually these solutions ask users for ad filter files or ad filter subscription urls. Most users don't know which ad filters to choose. If they choose unsuitable filter (for instance, user from Germany chooses an UK-oriented filter), they'll be dissatisfied, because ads will remain unblocked on the majority of sites they usually visit. Also existing ad blocking solutions provide many turning knobs in their settings, which are complex to understand and to use properly for the majority of users.

So I decided creating a solution, which is oriented towards an average user, who don't want to bother with mind-blowing settings in order to block all ads on the web. AdvertBan is designed to work perfectly out-of-the-box. It contains a minimum set of turning knobs, which should be understandable by an average user - "report ads", "switch on" and "switch off". If the user notices an ad on the page or a page broken by AdvertBan, he can click the "report ads" button and that's all! All such reports will be investigated by specially trained people, so all related problems will be fixed in an optimal way. Then AdvertBan extension will automatically load new ad filters.

There is also a technical problem, which is inherent to all existing solutions - ad filter lists don't scale. All such solutions keep the whole ad filter list in memory and matches each resource on a web page against each filter in the list. This means that the larger the ad list becomes - more memory the extension consumes and more slowly it works. This also means that it's impossible to create a perfect ad filter list, which will block all ads on the web. AdvertBan is designed to overcome this problem. There is no limit on the size of ad filter database, which is located on the AdvertBan server. The ad filter database can be infinitely detailed. This won't hurt AdvertBan's performance and won't increase its' memory consumption, because it caches only a small subset of the ad filter database, which is required for ads' blocking on sites the given user usually visit.

What's next for AdvertBan

Currently the main weakness of the AdvertBan extension is small and incomplete ad filter database. I hope our users will help filling the database with high quality ad filters soon by reporting ads noticed by them on sites they visit.
