I have subscribed to the RISKS Digest, edited by Peter G. Neumann, for over twenty years. When I first subscribed, RMAIL mode in Emacs was my email client of choice, and RMAIL mode had a M-x undigestify command to split messages in RFC 1153 format, in which the RISKS Digest is distributed. I've missed the undigestify functionality since leaving RMAIL mode behind many years ago, but I didn't have the time to learn enough about Thunderbird add-on development to replace it.
Then, along came the Send Later 3 add-on, which I took over from its previous maintainer, who had abandoned it, and ported it to Thunderbird 3 because I really wanted the functionality and no one else was doing it. Maintaining Send Later 3 for the past since July 2010 has forced me to learn more than I ever wanted to know about add-on development. Once I felt like I had what I needed, all it took was one all-nighter give or take, and presto, Undigesify was born.
I made the first version of the add-on very specific to RFC-1153-compliant digests. I suspect that there are digest formats out there that try to be compliant but don't quite make it, or that use formats similar to, but not identical to, RFC 1153's. If you read a mailing list in a digest format that Undigestify doesn't understand, and you'd like Undigestify to work on it, I'd love you to send me a sample message or a pointer to the mailing list so I can see what I can do about supporting it.
If you have any suggestions or comments about the add-on, please let me know (firstname.lastname@example.org)!
