Why was Lightning created?
Lightning was created to provide users of Mozilla Thunderbird with a tightly integrated calendaring and task management tool that could one day compete and outshine Microsoft Outlook. We're not there yet, but since its creation in 2005 Lightning has made tremendous progress and is by far the most popular add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird today.
What's next for Lightning
In every release we are currently focused in stabilizing our features. As Thunderbird and the Mozilla Platform is constantly changing, we need to adapt our code to keep up. We also want to make sure that Lighting is an addon you can rely on. Therefore our main focus is performance and stability fixes and enhanced compatibility with other calendar applications. Also, anything that will allow the developers to spend more time creating exciting new features: this might sound rather boring, but automated tests and build system changes can give more confidence when making major changes and reduce the time needed to fix regressions.
On the feature side, we are striving to improve the integration to Mozilla Thunderbird to give users a powerful messaging tool with state-of-the-art calendaring and task management capabilities.
