My Reviews

Browser Server

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

RUBBISH. Rather use ST2's Sublime Server package, or set up a proper (X)AMP(P) localhost. Other ideas: check out Pagekite and Webbo. You're welcome. Why I call this CRAPWARE (even started a collection for that just because of it):This prompts you EVERY TIME you start FF with a popup asking if it can show occasional ads. My story: despite clicking "remember this decision" and selecting no, it continued to do so, every time. One day I decided to click yes, out of curiosity. Thereafter a window would pop up - OUTSIDE the desktop visible area (*faceplant*) - with each new session. Said window was almost frameless - like a popup with toolbars disabled. It was non-resizable. The only way to even see the contents was to press F11 and make it fullscreen. It was loading up some silly blog with a poor WoT rating.

Update: AFTER writing the above I scrolled through the reviews, and found https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/browser-server/reviews/452386/ which says exactly what I warned about here. Don't be so foolish like sheep, people. Don't see all the 5 stars and think "OH COOL".

I always say: Never trust anything that gets a score of 10/10. Okay it's the first time I said that, but still holds true. Only exceptionally good things get 5 stars. On the flipside, I would give this a -4, but can't

DownThemAll!

DTA! is the BOSS of Addons. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

First off, I wish to take my hat off to the guy who signed up just to say that DTA! is what it is: the best download manager for "raw", browser-linked, FTP or SFTP, cloud, sea, desert-hosted, wherever they're hosted, files. Except of course for torrents. I would, given the choice, download a 15GB (OPEN SOURCE) game or educational film about the polka-dotted pigeon-fowl of Rwanda as a magnet->torrent. But if it were the same thing, just the choice was for the Ubuntu iso... I'd use DTA without thinking twice because the source I knpow to be reliable, and it will whip that 700MB-ish data package's ass in at most two hours. Probably much less. May DTA live forever as it is - one of the few rare apps that have stuck to their original recipe. And may the devs be granted entry to heaven for their humanitarian efforts. Amen,

As for https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/downthemall/reviews/434358/ - well, it's not noob friendly. Stick to the built in download thing on Google Chrome. No setup required at all.

Firefox OS 1.1 Simulator

Update Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Looks Promising! P.s. @devs: i get a greyed out box ie. cant install on Comodo Icedragon but I got it to install with the xpi, manually. And boy does it work!

Edit: @Myk probably one of my addons interfering - I'll try safe mode to check if that's the case first. Thanks for responding.

DownThemAll!

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I think this is one addon I give an "annual" review. And for the nth time in a row: 5/5! "Why do I sometimes get .html" downloads?" - a reviewer... because either: a) You're an idiot, b) The mp3/game/virus you want to download is a dead link or c) Both a and b

oh wait, it is open all the time.

But still...

Stop YouTube Autoplay

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This should be standard in Youtube. I hate when videos and audio just autoplay at random. Also, I hate that we have to make hacks to fix what Google messed up on.
But kudos to dev for doing a good job.

[update]
@Nx... honestly, the idea behind the addon is not truly unique. Or rather, not something that without a doubt *adds on* to the main resource.
Youtube could have a simple setting for autoplay on or off, but doesn't. So one has to install an addon. That's what lowers my rating.

But because the implementation is good, and addon is stable, 3 stars. Hope that makes sense.

While we are on the topic, I hardly ever give any addon 5 stars. For me 5 = many years of consistency, reliability and one that makes the FF experience what it is. I think DownThemAll is the only one I gave 5 to; if I did any other, it was a mistake/I was high on something.
1 = a waste of space. Useless
2 = good idea, implementation could be better
3 = good idea, well built app
4 = great idea, great implementation
5 = I can't live without it

Firefox Sync for Firefox 3.5/3.6

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

I've increased my rating by a star (from 1 to 2/5) because it's become a bit slicker and something's really happening in the cloud because it works.
Only, I wish I could see a bit of WHAT is actually happening in the cloud (like we could before). It only says "syncing" now; I want access to my synced bookmarks too, not just the comfort of knowing they're being synced.

I've been using this in conjunction with sxipper and delicious for years, and apart from duplicated bookmarks, haven't really lost much.

I guess in a nutshell I'm saying: Sync (formerly Weave) keeps changing it's clothing and it's not just confusing, but annoying too. Similar to what Ubuntu do annually. MAke up your minds in terms of the direction you're heading, and go there!

DownThemAll!

ESSENTIAL Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is THE classic add-on for FF. Probably one of the add-ons that make FF a power-user's swiss army knife. And the best part? DTA! has stayed true to its roots; hasn't changed much in terms of usability all these years, and I hope it never does!
The only add-on I would almost give a 5 star review, actually I want to give it 4.5 but I can't, so it gets a 4 which is very high in my book.

update: DTA gets the only ever 5 star I've given to date (maybe ever will?) for being tried, tested and true since it first was released. Keep it up!

Clipmarks

Decent app (alas, caveat) Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This service has been around for some time... and it's still here, still the same. Which is good. Because it means it's more likely to survive as a great (often handy) means of clipping, sharing, storing (in the cloud) important bits out of a full webpage. Another handy use for it is one can build up a collection of users to follow and generate a nifty RSS feed of clips.

Update: I didn't understand the review below, so translated it via Google Translate:
"No possibility to save the clip to disk, only on the publisher's site, contrary to what the video shows seen on youtube site http://clipmarks.com/installed/firefox
The license for this add-on is also worth seeing, it should not even be legal in France. Other users have requested that the local backup is "restored" a year ago, without success. If the wishes of the users are despised so, what about respect for private life??
In other words to avoid.
Immediately removed once installed ... extending the fastest on my FF."

Raises a point worth serious consideration, I must say.

Firefox Sync for Firefox 3.5/3.6

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Back when this was called Weave, it worked like a charm. Now, it's sluggish, it seems to sync my Bookmarks like every 10 minutes (okay slight exaggeration... more like every hour), and each time it's syncing Firefox become ridiculously slow and almost unusable. Also, the sync takes a couple of minutes to execute, whereas before it took seconds!

It's as if this addon is deteriorating with each update instead of improving. If Mozilla would have my advice, it'd be: K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid.

Fast Dial

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I don't know what you guys did, but you disappointed me as well. There is no need for fancy themes and so on... the thing I liked about fast dial was that you could place simple, neat logos for all your speed dials. Also, what's up with all the adware/spyware/malware in the new update? And I have lost all my fast dial bookmarks over my 3 synced PCs. Somehow 2 folders got created and some of my dials got deleted and... ah what the hell. It's not even worth complaining. All good things come to an end as they say. Pity you fell into the trap of spoiling a good thing by being over-zealous, and brought about the beginning of the slew of inevitable commercial, half-baked, half-assed firefox addons.
