I read a lot of manga online and it was always a hassle to keep flipping between tabs or have to have to browser windows open side by side. With this addon I can now have two tabs side by side in one browser window and read two manga at the same time.

Downloaded this and had an immediate use for it. Within 90 seconds had the basics down and was tiling like a pro! Operates just like it's a native part of the browser

I use Tile Tabs all the time, but typically only activate it to view two tabs side-by-side (left/right). I most commonly accomplish this with F12 because I don't like using the drop-down menus. If I have numerous tabs open and I do not want to change their order, I use the "shift-drag" mouse function. To tile tabs that are not next to each other, simply do the following:
1. view one of the tabs you want tiled
2. hold "shift"
3. drag the tab you want tiled over the window of the tab you're currently viewing - an icon (labeled "Above," "Right," "Left," or "Below") will appear to the left of the cursor depending on where the cursor is on the window

Thanks for writing this extension!

More information please

As well as using the drop-down menus and F12, you can also create a layout by clicking on the toolbar button, or by double-clicking on any tab, or using the Arrow-Key shortcuts, or using Shift+Drag on any tab.

In standard Firefox, there is not a mouse shortcut which overrides Tile Tabs' Shift+Drag shortcut. The article you referenced makes no mention of Shift+Drag. Even if there was, you can change the Tile Tabs shortcut to be any combination of Shift/Ctrl/Alt + Drag.

It is not clear what you mean by "tabs which are separated" - please explain in more detail (email to: dw-dev@gmx.com).

This is a great extension! Especially for searches: Have the search tab in the upper tile, and open the search results in the lower tile.

However, I have one wish for improvement:

I'm using Tree Style Tabs, where if I use middle-click to open a new tab, the new tab is set as at a child tab to the one I've opened it on. It would be nice if this would also work for opening in another tile (Ctrl + Middle click). Currently they open as top-level tabs, and I have to move them to the correct level in the tree manually.

The same is true for the "tile link in new tab" functions (or however it is called in the English interface, in the German localization, it's the links in the submenu "Link in neuem Tab kacheln"; it's the functions which create a new tile and open the link in a new tab shown in that new tile). On the other hand, for the functions creating a new (empty) tab in the new tile, the current behaviour is exactly right.

Possibly this behaviour should be an option, because I can imagine others to consider tabs in different tiles to be independent of each other, even if they were created from a link in the other tile.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, just install Tree Style Tabs (possibly on a test profile) and then middle click on a link. Also, add a new tab with Ctrl+T. Currently "Ctrl+Middle click tabs" in Tile Tabs look like "Ctrl-T tabs", not like "Middle-click tabs". I'd like them to look like "Middle click tabs".

Note that I have no idea if this would be hard to implement. It's only a minor issue, so it would only make sense to implement it if it is not too hard to do. The extension is already great as is.

Great update!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Now using full time since last update enabled me to have multiple layouts open at same time. Only thing is now I cannot rename my tabs or tabs don't reflect bookmark name anymore since extension is enabled.

This is by far the most useful extension for any browser..... ever. When I start work in the morning I have seven different windows I need to be able to view. I used to have to open each and log in one by one. Then I resized the windows to my liking (stacking or side by side was close but no cigar). Now I just open firefox. Select the layout I have saved, which comes up with the log in pages of all the web apps I use daily, ready to sign on. What use to take ten minutes and become less and less organized through out the day is now done in 2 minutes and stays in the exact same format all day. LOVE IT!!! Thanks devs!! One of the most user centric things you could have done. Hats off, Kudos and keep up the good work.

picture in picture (tab in tab) Rated 5 out of 5 stars

i would like to watch a video or stream (or website) in a small tab in any corner of the screen while i can surf at the same time.
but if i split the screen into 2 tiles i lose a lot of space by the second tab which would be needed while surfing on the first tab

will there be a possibility to make picture in picture (tab in tab)
so you can see 1 or more tabs (floating) over another tab?
like in the addon "float video".

i tried to achieve this with the help of stylish, but i am no programmer.
so in the end i couldn't choose which tab should be shown on the "floating tab". it only showed me the last opened tab in the "floating tab".

thx for this great addon.

Extremely neat and useful, great job!

One request though. Could it automatically set the current tab (i.e. when the mouse is in) as the active tab?

Automatic tile activation (tab selection)

The feature to automatically activate a tile (and select the tab) is incorporated in the beta version of Tile Tabs 10.1. If you would like to test this feature and provide some feedback, then please e-mail: dw-dev@gmx.com.

Tab Group-specific Layouts needed Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I use several Tab Groups to organize my various roles / workflows. Tile Tabs is very helpful for some of my workflows where I need to interact with content from multiple sites/apps concurrently for some tasks. But it appears that I can only work with one Tile Tabs Layout per Window. Since FF Tab Groups are associated with a Window, this limits me to only one Tile Tabs Layout per Tab Group.

What I need is to associate a distinct Tile Tabs Layout to each Tab Group, so that when I switch to a different Tab Group, the Window is populated with the Tabs for that Group (as usual), AND the Tile Tabs Layout I saved for that Tab Group is applied.

Yes, that makes the relationships (Tabs, Groups, Windows, Tile Layouts) more complex. It looks like I may be able to use different (saved) Layouts as meta-Groups, and just switch between Layouts instead of switching between Tab Groups. Don't know yet if that will be sufficient.

Multiple Tiled Layouts

Tile Tabs 10.0 will support multiple tiled layouts within each Firefox browser window. As at present, each tiled layout can contain tabs from more than one tab group. Hopefully, this will meet your requirements.

Tile Tabs 10.0 has been under development for some time, and is now in the final stages of beta testing, with release planned for June.

To DW-dev (Developer):

First of all, I want to thank you guys for this great tool... this is an amazing tool... it makes the browsing experience really easy. So thank you again and keep it up...
I know that is not the first time you've been asked this question or request. "Multiple tiled layouts"

But when I am reading your reply I am confident that you can make it happen.Would you be able to take a second look and see if there is any other solutions.

Greatly appreciated.

Multiple tiled layouts

by DW-dev (Developer) on November 30, 2012 · permalink

The idea of having multiple tiled layouts at the same time has been requested by a number of users in the past. Technically, this could be done, because the Tile Tabs internal data structures are very generic. The obvious way to do it would be to have a different skin color for each tiled layout, but there are some design and user interface issues that would need resolving. However, his feature has not been implemented for fear of making the user interface more complicated and difficult to understand.

An alternative would be to use the Save Layout command to create a saved layout for each required set of tiled tabs, and then use the Recent Layout command to quickly switch between the tiled layouts.

Multiple Tiled Layouts

As a result of continuing requests from users, the feasibility of multiple tiled layouts has been investigated further, and it looks as if it can be implemented with relatively minor changes to the user interface. This feature is already under development and planned for Tile Tabs 10.0.

Makes online school TONS easier Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I am in online schooling due to an abundance of health issues, and usually we use Google searches and Wikipedia for a book. I like to have both a search engine, Wikipedia, and something to take notes in [like a self addressed email] all open and visible at the same time so transitioning amongst them is easier. The problem I had is that I am an add-on-aholic and have big toolbars on each window. This limited screen space for each to the size of about 1& 1/2 x the area of an index card. Tile tabs is great because every thing is in the same window, and easier to adjust. My only problem so far is that it is easy to forget which tab is currently active, because it is not very obvious. The only indicator of such is a faint blue outline around the active tile.
