We all know the problem - someone has a bright idea to do a Gaelic spellchecker but rather than do it the long and hard way by building what's called a lexical database (think of that as a massive table that links forms like mhuc, mhucan, muice, mhuice etc to the root muc, they just compile a long list. They then don't maintain the list, making for very unhappy users.
This one is different. It's based on the lexical database in the Faclair Beag which means that although there are still a few bugs in it, you will get regular updates for the spellchecker. Simple as that.
Mainly three things, tidying the existing data (there's always a typo you missed and expanding the lexical database, as there are still gaps in it and filtering our some of the more obscure words to make the suggestions more relevant.

Michael Bauer "Akerbeltz" graduated in linguistics and celtic studies in Edinburgh but based in Glasgow these days, running a small company providing Scots Gaelic language services. He came to the field of localisation and development of technology for Scots Gaelic via the translation angle, though he has always been interested in speech and language technology.
So far, that has resulted in localisation/development of Firefox, Thunderbird, the Faclair Beag, Opera 11 and various others.

I am American, originally from Boston but living in St. Louis, Missouri now. For many years I've had a great interest in the Irish language and language technology. I lead the team that created the Irish localizations of Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, and I created the spell checker "GaelSpell", which is available as an add-on from this site (I translated this site too!) Enjoy, and send me a note if you get some benefit from these programs!
