Last updated 2014 but Omnibar Lite to the rescue! Rated 5 out of 5 stars
Omnibar Lite is here! But read my review before writing your own review and giving it low stars just because you didn't customize Firefox, hid the search box and enable the search engine icon. This user has a previous review of this add-on.
Main reason I use ESR Rated 5 out of 5 stars
Works great in Firefox 45 ESR. I can't live without the ability to quickly switch engines in my url bar. I really don't want an extra search bar taking up toolbar space!! Why would Firefox force that on us??? No upgrading for me.
I LOVE the ability to add a custom search engine for some sites.
It was very useful for changing default engine, but it is broken now Rated 5 out of 5 stars
It would be very nice to return an ability to change current search engine using an icon in the location bar. It seems that there is no alternatives for this feature.
UPD: I'm using Omnibar Lite now: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/omnibar-lite/
Only Mozilla would "Feature" a broken addon Rated 1 out of 5 stars
Its most useful feature was the ability to click the icon in the location bar and change search engines before searching. Can't even be be maintained to keep it useful.
And this is what is to become of Firefox.
Obsolete, default in lastest firefox's versions Rated 1 out of 5 stars
In lastest versions of ff the searche work directly in the adressebar... if not -> about:config -> keyword.enabled = true !
Obsolete Rated 2 out of 5 stars
Great for older Firefox versions. For those looking to replace it, I suggest Beyond Australis. On the options for that add-on, you can activate the Awesome Bar and check "show search engines in the location bar." It will give a similar feel to Omnibar. If you do not want the bar to auto-hide, under the slim chrome panel on the left, you can also uncheck "also hide navigation bar".

Workaround: Disable and Enable in preference.
Great addon but do not work on 47.0 Rated 3 out of 5 stars
Great add-on so far, but with the new Firefox 47.0 it does not work... I will but 5 stars when it is fixed! Is the source code released somewhere? Maybe I can give a hand debugging. This user has a previous review of this add-on.
Source code is available at https://github.com/ajitk/omnibar. Thanks!
Печально, очень печально! ( Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Addon is broken, but there's no need for it anymore Rated 3 out of 5 stars
The functionality of the addon has been integrated in the latest Firefox.
Great, but the "Manage Search Engines" bug desperately needs fixing Rated 5 out of 5 stars
This addon is great and its features need to be natively implemented in Firefox. The bug mentioned in the title is a major problem, however.
Great add-on normally, but a big bug Rated 2 out of 5 stars
opening the "Manage Search Engines" menu causes firefox to lock up and become unresponsive
Great addon but recently broken Rated 2 out of 5 stars
This is an excellent addon but it seems to be broken of late (previously rated at 4). Press manage seach engine freezes firefox in Linux. Try to go to prefs and managing the searches from there yield no better results.
I've gotten around the bug by unhide mozilla native search ui and managing the search engines from there. not ideal/
It would be my pleasure to review my rating should this bug be fixed.
FireFox 43.0.2 bug Rated 5 out of 5 stars
In FireFox 43.0.2 in simple url bar mode, enter not work on first item in drop-down list and when caret at the end of URL. In previous version I use (most likely 42.0) enter key worked fine. See image: https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6425/8555553.0/0_129226_c59e3411_orig.png
Solution from https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/oldbar/
Fix for this:
browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete = false
It should be implemented as a core feature Rated 5 out of 5 stars
Absolutely great add-on. Some time ago I was thinking about moving to Opera but it seems it's impossible to get Awesome Bar in Chromium (there is Fauxbar add-on which is not continued so it's already not working great and will be dead in the future). As I'm really used to this feature in Firefox, I started looking for a way to combine address bar and search bar and I'm happy I found this add-on.
It has everything I need and even more. I really like being able to disable searching in internet to look in bookmarks and history first and then adding search operator and change standard Awesome Bar into search bar.
Must-have add-on for me.
PS: I don't have problems with "Manage Search Engines" - maybe it was a bug in FF itself?
love it Rated 5 out of 5 stars
This is the bomb, especially once you customize your search engine shortcut keys because the vanilla firefox requires you to use the shortcut keys in the address bar, which defeats the purpose of the search bar. Anyway, @Morcas, I am experiencing the same glitch you are describing and I believe it may be because Firefox has moved where the search settings are. Currently, you can manually go to the settings menu > Options > Search and get what you normally would see.
Manage Search Engines broken Rated 4 out of 5 stars
Because of the awful changes Mozilla made to the search engine management, going forward, Omnibar is broken. When selecting Manage Search Engines the whole browser freezes and has to be forceably terminated.
I hope we'll see a fix...
Thanks for reporting the problem. Will check it out.
