Thank you Instantfox Dev... Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thank you for the years of support. My web browsing with this extension saved me many hours of typing/copying/pasting over the time I've used it. As a power-user, I cannot 'live' without such a convenience and increased productivity.

So, thank you for developing it and supporting it all this time. :)

But...life moves on and now there's another solution I'm using. This info below is to help other refugees looking for the perfect replacement (IMO). Have no worries, there's a savior for us power-users.

Behold: Context Search X (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/context-search-x/)

*Based on Ben Basson's Context Search: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/context-search/

CSX brings a bit more customizations/tweaks to the table.

My current configuration- screencaps:

How it looks for my Context menu: http://imgbox.com/m6Ewcizm

Managing Search Engines List option box: http://imgbox.com/X8TNW5Bi

It's very easy to use/setup. Just install, configure as needed. Here's some help: At http://mycroftproject.com/ - you can click to install the search engines you desire. CSX will pick them up and add to your Context menu. :)

You can re-arrange the engines as needed, show on the Context Main menu rather than Sub-menu (or not). Add site search with a particular installed search engine even.

I cannot at this time find a fault with Context Search X. I think it is a perfect replacement for Intantfox.

I hope the above info helps for those looking to migrate from Instantfox.

Again, thank you to the developer. And thank you as well to the dev of Context Search X. :)

Although it is broken from FF 48, hope someone continue good work in the future.

Developer Has Abandoned... Not His Fault Rated 5 out of 5 stars

If you have been following the discussion you will read that the developer has abandoned InstantFox because several versions ago FireFox changed the way it does some things and InstantFox can no longer work properly. I noticed problems with the address bar several versions of FF back and now, with FF50, it is completely broken. InstantFox was one of my favorite add-ons. It's too bad, but don't blame the developer. This highlights the danger of relying on add-ons. They aren't part of FireFox and they could break at any time. Sad to say but you shouldn't use them for anything critical as you never know when they will just go poof. The add-on model has a lot of good things about it. But this is a fatal flaw. I give the developer 5 stars for this brilliant project, even though it no longer works. It's not his fault.

Very sad - completely broken by FF 50 Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I love(d) this extension. It was so useful. But there is every indication that the developer has abandoned it, and with FF 50, it not only no longer works at all, it also breaks Firefox so that the Awesome Bar (address and search bar) no longer works either. I really hope someone will step up to the plate and revive this once valuable add-on.

Have been pleased up until now... Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Just upgraded to Firefox 50.0 and now I can't use my address bar at all when InstantFox is enabled. Up until now I haven't had a problem. I hope there is a fix for this soon.

It's broken Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Addon is unusable after Firefox 50 update. It's work kind of ok with earlier version with tolerable bugs. Now it's dead. Too bad. I liked it a lot and used heavily.

Поломал адр строку Rated 5 out of 5 stars

После обновления ФФ с 42 до 49 аддон поломал историю в адресной строке.
Пришлось отказаться. а жаль - оч хороший аддон. Пошел искать аналоги.

Loved it, now breaks Awesome bar Rated 2 out of 5 stars

If you don't need autocomplete of history, great extension. Used to work with Awesome bar, but somewhere around Firefox 48 it stopped working.

A great plugin, hope it gets an update Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Broke Suggested Search Results Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Suggestions based on history and frequent visits while typing in the address bar because of this add-on are broken!

FF 49.X Incompatible with Suggested Search Results Rated 2 out of 5 stars

While InstantFox is enabled, Firefox doesn't show suggestions based on History and Frequent visits while typing in the address bar.

I can't live without my suggested bookmarks in the search bar ... so this is is getting disabled for now.

Gutted Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This add-on has made my life so much easier over the last few years, and it's a real shame to have to disable it. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution or an alternative add-on will provide some of the same features, because I use(d) this multiple times every day :-(

Reviving this project Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I am a long time user of Instantfox but the constant degredation of usefulness is hurting my user experience of FF itself. I depend on the addon and would love to help get this thing going again.
If you want to help, SEE https://github.com/estivo/Instantfox/issues/129
Maybe we can get some people together and fix this thing up again.

Finally resigned to disabling this addon Rated 5 out of 5 stars

For the past week or so, I've been trying to hold-off disabling this addon, but my patience has finally run out. Without search suggestions, this awesome addon is no longer bearable to use.

Like many, I've been using this add-on almost since it came out, and it was one of the reasons I stuck with Firefox for so long. Even with all its hiccups of incompatibility for the past year or so, I still tried to find workarounds suggested by other users to keep it functioning.

I'll miss this addon. Now using Firefox's similar built-in feature with keyword search engine & another addon called context search to simulate the old experience, but I still liked instant fox's ease of use & semi-transparent search suggestions. Great job overall however, and thanks to the developers who've attempted to keep this addon compatible with newer FF versions. However, it seems as though unless someone rewrites the entire codebase, this addon will remain incompatible with future FF versions.

I'll still re-enable this addon in a heartbeat if it gets fixed somehow. Until then, it will stay disabled.

InstantFox is still working on Extended Service Release Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is a great add-on, as it offers fully customizable search shortcuts with search suggestions. Unfortunately it does not work with Firefox 48 or higher. I have looked for solutions and alternative extensions with the same functionality, but I found none.

For that reason I moved to Firefox ESR by installing an ESR version. This will allow me to stay on an earlier version of Firefox until March 2017, and keep on using InstantFox.

If there still is no solution by March 2017, I will probably start using Vivaldi as my main browser. Vivaldi natively offers fully customizable search shortcuts (but I prefer the way they are presented by InstantFox).

Sad to know it is not compatible with recent FF versions. Used it at least for 5 years.
Thanks a lot to developer for this very useful tool.
