BlockSite is an extension, which automagically blocks websites of your choice. Additionally, this extension will disable all hyperlinks to these websites, by just displaying the link text without the clicking functionality.
About this Add-on
If you are having trouble with blocking websites you don't want to block, all you need to do is switch to a Black List and you will be fine. Please address any questions to our support page. We check your suggestions every day:
You can add and/or remove websites, you don't want to visit ever again, via the BlockSite Preferences. You can open this window by clicking on the options button of BlockSite in Tools > Add-ons menu, or by clicking on the Preferences item in the context menu of the extension in the Extension Manager.
You can block whole ranges of websites by using the wildcard symbol (*):
If you want to block, for example, a lot of Microsoft websites, you can use the following line: "http://*.microsoft.*" and "http://microsoft.*" The * symbol indicates that there may be zero or more random characters at that place.
You can import and export lists of locations via the 'Import' and 'Export' buttons in the 'BlockSite Preferences' window. The first line in the file you want to import has to be the '[BlockSite]' in order to be read succesfully. So your file may look like:
If you still use Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.*, you can use older versions of this extension.
If you lost your password: go to about:config (type about:config in the location bar and press enter) and reset the BlockSite.authenticate entry or clear the BlockSite.password entry.
Some problems were reported about the loading latency whenever a very long list of blocked urls has to be checked. Every web site often makes more than ten HTTP calls and on every call, the long list of urls is checked. It's quite obvious and I probably won't change it.

Unfortunately Noel Briggs wasn't able to co-maintain this add-on, so I took over again. Please donate if you would like to see BlockSite updated regularly.
2010/02/01: The first donation pledge of $50 was reached in less than two weeks. Thanks to all who've donated. I will be working on a major update (with probably much faster execution and certainly with less bugs). This can take a while, so don't worry if you will not see the major update shortly.
2010/02/12: I've been working on the long awaited update for a few days now. Unfortunately it needs complete restructuring with completely new code, because most of it buggy or just plain old. Thanks to all who have donated so far.
- allow to block just a certain URL
- added opt-in for statistics

How does the analytics work?
Registration of new user of extension
We provide analytics of Active users and downloads for our partners and for our extensions. So anytime a user downloads and install the extension, it will automatically get an unique GUID , which looks similar to this: a576d785-b2d3-4534-81a2-2692f74108dc
GUID (or UUID) is an acronym for 'Globally Unique Identifier' (or 'Universally Unique Identifier'). It is a 128-bit integer number used to identify resources. The term GUID is generally used by developers working with Microsoft technologies, while UUID is used everywhere else. The GUID is completely randomally assigned to the extension.
Check for update
Once a week an extension is checking for updates for configurations file to our servers.
