Why was gContactSync created?
I'm a college student with a major in computer engineering. I created version 0.1 of this extension as a Google Summer of Code project in 2008. Now it has become a hobby since I enjoy (open source) programming and have a lot of contacts to synchronize over multiple e-mail accounts, computers, and operating systems.
What's next for gContactSync
I am working on version 0.3 which supports several new fields added by Google and will probably support directly synchronizing postal addresses between Thunderbird's multiple fields and Google's single field. 0.3 will also support new fields and features available in Thunderbird 3 such as the existing birthday field and the future anniversary field. My development version is able to download and display photos from Google and display them in Thunderbird 3 beta 4+/Seamonkey 2.0b2+.
0.3 will allow custom settings for each synchronized address book as well as the ability to synchronize individual groups from the same Google account with multiple address books.
If you are interesting in test versions of 0.3 see this topic: http://pirules.org/forum/index.php?topic=88
0.4 may allow synchronizing your Thunderbird contacts with other sources through plug-ins.
