BlockSite Plus Mobile 1.0
An experimental extension to bring your BlockSite Plus functionality to firefox mobile!
Fast and tiny at 3.1 KB download size.
About this Add-on
The aim of this extension is to provide a fast, tiny yet completely functional site blacklist you can use on the mobile device.
Quick setup steps
Install BlockSite Plus on your desktop firefox
Install BlockSite Plus mobile on your mobile firefox (fennec)
Set up firefox sync between firefox and fennec
On firefox desktop enable bookmarks sync under your sync options. BlockSite Plus keeps your blacklist in the bookmarks folder.
In the BlockSite Plus options dialogue of firefox desktop, click on "mobile sync" button.
In the Firefox mobile (fennec) preferences panel select sync, details and sync now.
You should get a message "Blacklist updated". You are done!
The "sync" is one way. BlockSite Plus settings on firefox desktop gets pushed to fennec.
Make sure your blacklist is not empty, or no update message will occur on fennec.
Again no update message will show up on fennec unless the blacklist is modified since the last sync and you clicked on the "mobile sync" button. The sync is always initiated manually via the "mobile sync" button.
If you are encountering issues, try "Replace all settings with this computer" under firefox desktop menu Tools -> Options -> Sync
At this time users are forced to use a desktop version of Firefox to configure, then send this config to mobile Firefox.
I have found trying to add blacklist on mobile Firefox's tiny UI a frustrating experience and so this is my take on a user friendly solution for setting up custom web filtering on mobile Firefox.
Configuring is done through the firefox desktop client, there is no need to access the BlockSite Plus mobile extension options.
You will also find that this add on do not require subscription to an external blacklist such as easy list, this is my design intention as I do not agree with having one's phone network bandwidth used up on downloading blacklist subscription updates.
Blacklisted media content are blocked before they are downloaded to your device, and thus not use your precious bandwidth.
The blacklist sync is controlled manually, there is no background traffic incurred updating your blacklist unless you start synchronisation each time you wish to update.
