My Reviews

Note Board - Sticky Notes app

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I think this is terrific looking and highly functional. I have installed it in both Firefox and Chrome. I'm not complaining about it -- it is free, after all, and I don't want to be rude -- but it would be a great help if there were options to export a board's notes to a text file, and to print a board. Otherwise, this is a marvelous addition that ought to be embedded with every copy of Chrome and Firefox!

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (3.0.18).

Google Shortcuts - All Google Services at a glance

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This version surrendered the great functionality of earlier versions, which permitted tailoring your shortcuts so that you could add, for example, the NY Times in to the panel of shortcuts. I used the older version constantly; this version feels more like an ad for Google products and is far less useful.

Download Status Bar

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This extension is so useful that it was one reason I backed down from Firefox v57 to v56.0.2 -- I prefer the degree of control that this extension provides.

Simple Mail

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I use Simple Mail all the time to clean the waste e-mails from my server while leaving key messages intact. It vacuums up the mess after I'm done. As of Firefox v57 this wonderful extension no longer works, but it mattered enough to me that I've backed off from v57 to v56.0.2.

OneTab

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Several times all of my saved tabs have disappeared when Firefox updated -- and there is no way to retrieve them! This had appeared to be a very useful extension, but now I have no confidence in it.

NoScript Security Suite

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Why did Mozilla release v57 without first ensuring that NoScript would work in that environment? This lapse by itself was enough for me to back down to v56.0.2 -- not to mention the many other very useful extensions (saving as MHT format, Last Tab Close, etc.) that automatically became incompatible with the new release.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (5.1.5).

New Add-on Bar

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This became essential for Firefox after Mozilla killed the bottom status/add-on bar. With v57 this no longer works, and that is a shame -- also a good reason to back down to v56.0.2 after trying out the terrible v57. I hope Mozilla is listening; v57 is a dog. A very fast, sleek dog. (But a dumb -- make that very dumb -- dog.)

Mozilla Archive Format, with MHT and Faithful Save

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

The most useful Save As available is no longer workable in Firefox. This was another reason I backed off and downgraded to v56.0.2 after trying the horrific v57.
Every few years, Mozilla nukes its own highly useful software. Why? Because.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (5.2.0).

Last Tab Close Button

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is an ESSENTIAL for Firefox, and the fact that v57 does not work with this is one reason I backed down to v56.0.2!

QuoteURLText

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This small extension is EXTRAORDINARILY USEFUL when you're researching -- it allows acquiring information along with appropriate, tailored source data. It's one reason I backed down from Firefox 57 -- just to retain this & a few other important extensions.

Shortcuts for Google™ Products

Inferior compared to prior versions Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This version is VERY inferior to prior releases. It now feels like an advertisement for Google products. It has NO real "Help" features and is NOT intuitive. Some of the best features of prior versions: intuitive interface; ability to add custom links to non-Google sites; flexibility in deciding where the pop-up appears; readily available admin button to adjust features.
Update 11/2017: Still terrible, no attempt to correct deficiencies. Earlier versions (see Google Shortcuts) permitted adding your own URLs. This is a waste of time

Better than ever! (an updated review) Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I am SO impressed by this update that I can't express my gratitude to the developer. He has heard every nasty complaint and addressed each one with a flexible, totally functional add-on that not only made me feel glad to have donated, but is sending me back to RE-donating! Thank you for all of this work!
PRECEDING REVIEW (which was called "almost there"):
As of this new version, I can move the icon to the Add-on bar, but this requires installing the extension "New Add-on Bar" -- which I hope will continue to work in future versions of Firefox.
The only issue is that it is only available as a pop-up, not as a strip of multiple days. That strip was really useful.
BTW, I contributed to this developer, and he is responsive -- so I encourage others to do so as well.

Almost back to good function Rated 4 out of 5 stars

OK, it now shows up in the Menu Bar, and I can drag the icon down to the Add-on Bar that I restored via the extension below.
However, there is no option to view as anything other than a pop-up. I liked having the row of 3 days ahead visible on the bar - it was an easy, no-effort view. Is it possible to restore this as an option?
PRIOR VERSION:
This is not a "vilify the developer" review. I liked the old version so much I contributed to the developer, who seems very nice and quite good as a programmer. But here is the problem:
I had the prior version showing at the bottom, in the Add-Ons bar (I use New Add-On to restore that function).
This new version does not show up anywhere. I can not even find an icon to drag it elsewhere!
I am VERY disappointed with this new development. So I've gone from 5 stars (first review, now missing on Mozilla!) and contributing to the developer down to this 1 star review, simply because despite contributing I now have zero ability to use it.

Problems in FF 53 Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Ever since I permitted the FF update in May 2017, the options for this extension do not work properly -- e.g. I cannot get rid of the satellite map icon, cannot kill separators, cannot get more than 2 days of predictions. Also, it now insists on opening the settings tab every time I open FF.
On the up side, it works with Chrome. But I don't use Chrome.
I am one of those folks who actually pays developers (and this is one of the few developers I've paid!) so this is more troubling than usual.

ImportExportTools

Still Working After All This Time! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Just downloaded 3.2.5 and this extension still works great (Tbird 45.2.0 under Win10Pro). Easily replaces all of the older, now-long-outdated extensions for exporting mail.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (3.2.4.1).

Highlighter

Used to work :-( Rated 2 out of 5 stars

I liked this and used it, but with the more recent versions of Thunderbird it no longer works, so I've moved over to Extra Format Buttons (despite that add-on having its own eccentricities). Very sorry to see this one go!

Select Address Book Text

Ceased working a while ago Rated 2 out of 5 stars

For a while, I used this add-on frequently; now it no longer works with the newer Tbird versions, and there is no replacement.
The problem is larger than one extension -- Tbird's address book display has become buggy and there is a real need for improvement, including the ability to copy text.
It is very sad that this is no longer working.

Simple Mail

Had ceased working in FF45 - FIXED !!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

THE NEW VERSION WORKS THANK YOU!
This is a text book example of why it's so important to support developers by contributing -- Simple Mail is so essential to Firefox that it's the kind of thing you wish was packaged with the program.

I had posted this review:
I don't know if the culprit is v45 or the latest Java update (I did both in 1 afternoon) but NO version (even the most recent, available elsewhere) works now. Just sits there like a sleepy snail.

Save as PDF

Terrible Add-On Rated 1 out of 5 stars

1. This may not save the page showing on screen -- it saves the parent if you're viewing through a frame. Which makes it pretty much useless.
2. It requires a PAID ACCOUNT if you want to adjust ANY parameters.

This does NOT belong on the official Mozilla site.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.5.1-signed.1-signed).

Simple Mail

This has stopped working Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I loved this add-on. Now it doesn't work any more.
