Geat Alternative for Personas Rotator Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I am loooooooooving this!! Ever since Personas Rotator had stopped functioning properly and the developer hasn't shown any signs of fixing the bugs I decided to give this a try. I'm so glad I did. Works perfectly and switches ALL of my 300+ personas within the set time. However, one tiny suggestion, make it easier to disable the notification that asks to undo the switch every time a persona is changed. I was able to find the workaround listed in the about:config settings and disable it there, but not everyone knows how to use the about:config. Please add a setting for the workaround to the list of options so people won't have to hunt for it.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (2.0).

No problem at all. I haven't been sure it was strictly necessary, but it now seems so. Thanks!

Okay, the setting in now visible in the preferences. Can you check https://github.com/drsjb80/personaswitcher/blob/master/personaswitcher-2.0.1.xpi and see if it works for you? You should be able to download it and drag-n-drop to your browser. Let me know. Thanks!

favorites? Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I've got over 1000 themes saved in my "favorites" that were rotated with Personas Rotator (which barely works correctly anymore). Will Switcher rotate my favorites list? Only a small amount are in my appearance folder. It would really be terrible to have to save each of my 1000 favorite personas over into the appearance page one at a time! Great ideas but I'd love it if it could replace the Rotator. and use my favorites which I collected for so long.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.17).

I'm not sure yet. Where are your themes saved? In Personas Plus? In "My Favorite Add-ons" on addons.mozilla.org? I'm happy to add the functionality if it's possible. Let me know. Thanks!

Okay, I think it should now do what you want. It's integrated with Peronsas Plus and should find all your favorites.

I wish can auto switch when startup

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.16).

Are you asking if the very first thing it does when starting Firefox is switch to a new persona, instead of waiting for the auto-rotate time? Let me know. Thanks!

The fifth star as promised... Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Oooops, thanks for guiding me with that. How come I was such a dork to not see that the hotkeys could be changed?!!

Please consider the following 3 suggestions to improve this already great addon:1. The menu items should highlight, or somehow indicate which of the personas is currently active(a very important thing that is missing)2. The option to delete a persona from the menu itself(this will help people quickly try personas, and improve their list over time)3. The option to use personas that you've saved among your favourites on the mozilla website(ensures that people download your addon the first thing when they switch to a new computer).4. If possible, the ability to tag personas, or sort them into folders, and then rotate personas only from within a folder.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.16).  This user has a previous review of this add-on.

Thanks for the suggestions! As for 1), the currently active persona is always the first one under the default. That's due to how personas are saved internally. Would it make sense to highlight that in addition? I've considered both 2) and 4) and I'll take a run at them when I get a chance. I haven't looked into 3) at all, but it sounds like a cool idea, so I'll definitely look into it. Thanks again!

3) should now work. What I'm doing for 4) is creating multiple logins using different email addresses, but I'm searching for a more elegant approach.

Works great! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

The current version works great with the same sort of setup as below. Bug must have been fixed. Thanks for the awesome extension!

Re: DOESN'T WORK! Rated 2 out of 5 stars

To the Developer:
Thanks for responding so quickly!

So here are my specs:
OS: Windows 7
FF: 20.01
Add On's:
-adblock plus
-better privacy
-colorful tabs
-fox tab
-fox lingo
-ghostery
-no script
-pocket
-quick maps
-quick wiki
- tab scope
-tile tab
-zotero
-thumb nail zoom
-personas plus (which I disabled thinking maybe it would solve my issue)

I would also like to note that have recently uninstalled all previous versions of FF so I could have a clean install of FF 20.

Thanks again!

I'll set up an environment like yours and see if I can replicate and squash the bug. Thanks!Yep, a difference in FF 20 creates a race condition. I'm working it.

OK, I've updated things and uploaded a new version: 1.14 -- try it out and let me know if it helps. Thanks!

Great Extension! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Persona Switcher is truly great and has the potential to completely replace Personas Plus and Personas Rotator in a single yet slick extension. It runs smoothly and its Automatic Switching feature is the main reason I switched to it, and I auto switch every minute to cycle through my 340 themes.

Two issues are worth noting. First, if you have Personas Plus installed, whenever Personas Switcher changes a theme, manually or automatically, it may show a pop up bar that says: "You selected the (Personas name) by (developer name)". Kinda annoying but you can easily get rid of it by disabling Personas Plus. Second, Personas Switcher is affected by Firefox's innate limitation to a maximum of 30 themes, and if you install more than 30, older ones automatically fall off the list. This issue can be overcome as follows: in about:config, right click an empty area and choose New->Integer, then enter lightweightThemes.maxUsedThemes, set a number such as 1000, and confirm it. There are 3 ways to sync these themes to another computer. One is to use Firefox's built-in Sync function, another method is to export them with FEBE (a handy extension), and the 3rd way is to copy the "Personas" folder and pref.js (both under Data->profile) to your destination folder (keep a backup of both in case of problem).

Personas Switcher offers a unique way to organize and use themes different from Personas Plus. However, be careful not to install too many themes this way as it may overload your Theme (now called Appearance) and make it freeze for a while. With a large number of Personas themes installed, such as 300, it's advisable not to go to Appearance under Addons unless necessary, since it may take a long time for them to finish loading. Overall this is an ingenious extension recommended for everyone!

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.12).

Thanks very much for the positive feedback! I've looked some but haven't been able to chase down why Personas Plus creates a conflict; it appears on the surface it modifies some internal FF data structures. Thanks for the pointer on how to increase the number of personas, I hadn't know that. All the best!

A BUG: the list of personas does not show up sometimes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

(I have customized Firefox to have the menu options displayed)
Sometimes, when I do Tools, Personas, the list of available personas does not show up. And at other times, it shows up!

I do have many tabs opened and I do not know if it causes problems with this addon but I also have 8 GB of RAM and not even half of it is used.
Therefore, I have to assume that this BUG is directly linked to this addon.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.12).  This user has 8 previous reviews of this add-on.

I have had the same experience, but I haven't been able to replicate the circumstances well enough to find whether the issue is in my addon or in Firefox itself. There does seem to be a combination of the number of open windows and tabs, and the content of the tabs, that causes the issue. If anyone can find a combination that always creates the problem, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

Toggle for the UNDO Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is an awesome addon. I'd really like the option to be able to stop the UNDO drop down from appearing. I like to see the theme name, but maybe that could be added into the Title-bar. Wonderful.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.11).

I don't quite understand what you mean by the UNDO drop down -- can you describe what you'd like to see in a little more detail? Thanks!

Okay, I think I've fixed the notify box appearing. Please try 1.18 and let me know if it helps.

This is GOLD, so much beter that that Persona Plus sh!t. I love it. The icon could use a little work though.

You're right about the icon -- I'm a programmer, not a graphic designer. Anyone want to take a stab at a better one? Thanks!

Answer To Prayers Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I have searched forever for something that does what your beautiful add-on does! And without restarting or compromising security? Forget about it! I thought i was content with using TOGGLE PERSONA with all that restarting, but this is bliss! Auto switching is a great feature that keeps out monotony. The key board Shortcuts are useful. Personally I just rotate but the commands are responsive and effective. The only thing I could use is a widget or toolbar button that switches personas ,or turns on/off auto switching. You already have the commands, you could recycle the code, but I am not too code savvy yet so i could be wrong. All things considered though it is by far the most useful customizing add-on i have the pleasure of using!

Thanks very much for the kind words! I'm putting the finishing touches on a toolbar button -- great minds think alike. Look for a new version this week or next. Thanks!

Awesome! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I love that I can have all my favorite personas at once. Top 3 add-on features: 1. Can manually set the time interval 2. Keyboard shortcut that lets you change the persona when you want 3. You can remove Default from the personas that the changer cycles through.

Works just fine with other Persona add ons for me. Good for people who have a lot of add ons and hate monotony.

New clue Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Hi, I have just got new findings: after testing with different profiles, I found that there is no problem with other add-ons. If a profile is in a session with only 1 window, then next time when Firefox starts with it, the menu is normal. And if a profile is in a session with multiple windows, then next time Firefox starts, the session and the windows are restored, and the Persona Switcher menu items only appear in the window which opens last, but in other windows the menu is empty. Hope this helps.

It helps a lot! I'll work on hunting this problem down. Thanks!

Can you try the 1.9 version? I think it fixes this problem. It hasn't been approved yet, but it at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lightweight-theme-switcher/versions/ Thanks much!

good, but ... Rated 4 out of 5 stars

i really like it, but the fifth star you'll get only when you give me a button with a dropdown of the themes that i can place on a toolbar - for true fast theme switching!

Fantastic Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Works very well too.

I have 40 or so personas and have used this add-on to rotate them every 15 minutes. This is also made much more interesting by the fact that personas are synced with FF sync too, meaning when I get home from work, my machine uses the last synced persona - cool! This may not be to everyone's taste (and is not the add-on devs fault, as it is a core feature of FF sync), so a workaround to stop this can be found here:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/723446

One improvement I can think of, again - probably nothing the add-on dev can do as it is the way FF loads the personas, is to pre-load the images used in the next persona so that the transition can be a smoother; currently FF swaps persona and then loads the images, making the transition (flicker?) more noticeable than it needs to be.

One last improvement is to make the add-on 'restartless' if possible, as personas don't require a restart - it would make it just that little bit more elegant.

All in all, Good job.

themes Rated 3 out of 5 stars

please make this work with regular themes

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.1).

Regular themes are much more involved -- they can change the entire interface and typically require a restart. I will look and see if this is even possible.

Does what it says, default keybinds overlap Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Addon does what it says, and works in 4.0. Description in add-on view is incorrect for the default keybinds (Says Ctrl+Shift+S for rotating through themes, but in options the default is Ctrl+Shift+R). All default keybinds overlap (Ctrl+Shift+R = refresh, Ctrl+Shift+A = add-ons, Ctrl+Shift+D = new bookmark) so changing the defaults is a must. I find Ctrl+Alt with the same letters works and does not overlap.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.0).

Fixed in 1.2 -- now the keys are Ctrl-Alt. Thanks!
