redacted. I was looking in the wrong place for the icon... it appears at the top of the composition window, below the email subject.

Simple and effective! Rated 4 out of 5 stars

It is pretty darn simple. You highlight the text, pick the color and you are in highlight heaven!

Useful tool Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I have been using for some time. It would be nice if one would be able to highlight text when reading a received email.

Nice add-on Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This is a really nice add-on. Does the highlighting go with the sent mail? I would really, really like a highlighter for the mail I read also. Is there any way to add this feature?

(Almost) Perfect! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Just what I was looking for! Works great with TB 16. Of course, customers always want more: It would be nice to have a wider choice of colors. Perhaps with a dialog similar to that used by the background color selector?

Hope to be able to use this fine Extension in the near future!! Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I will give more Stars if it can be installed. Unfortunately, when I attempt to do this, I get the following error message:
Not available for SeaMonkey 2.13.2
I would like very much to use this, and will check back.
[edit] After checking on github, I note there is very recent activity on this extension. Perhaps just editing the install.rdf
file might 'do the trick'?[/edit]

Excellent and useful (mandatory ??) Add-on ! This is simple to use and to install, although I have a request to make it work better for Seamonkey. I use the Trunk version and Highlighter does not integrate very well in the mail composition toolbar (icon / button too high). This is a minor point for a great add-on, really useful.

Correction to my post of August 14, 2012: It does work in SeaMonkey Messenger 2.11. The trick is to open a mail composing window, right-click on the Mail Toolbar, select Customize... from the context menu, then drag the Highlighter icon from the palette to where you want it on the toolbar. Unfortunately, the current incarnation of SeaMonkey doesn't allow one to drag the icon to the Formatting Toolbar (called "Formatting Bar" in Thunderbird), where the icon is automatically installed in Thunderbird, but at least it works. The instructions for this add-on need improvement, both here and at the developer's site. In the alternative, I'd like to see the add-on modified so that it installs in SeaMonkey Messenger as easily as it does in Thunderbird. It is frustrating to use this application when the installation is nebulous and experimentation is needed to get it to work. That's why gave it only three stars.

I found the pink highlighter a bit too dark, trending more toward magenta, so I tweaked the code in the overlay.js file, changing it from 'fdf' to 'faf' (hex colour values), and re-zipped it to create my own customised version of Highlighter xpi file, which I then installed in SeaMonkey.

Wonderfully Helpful! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I use this addon when I reply to folks and need to point out to them something important, either in my own message, or in a message quotation. This is fast and effective. Thank you!

Great add-on! Fill an important "gap" on Thunderbird.

Postbox 3.02 support Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Hello Highlighter is an excellent add-on to postbox...but no support for the newest version 3.0.2 can you support it

grate tool!
can you add the same functionality for text-color? Thunderbird text-color tool is somewhat ... unusable for more multiple usage.

Tip: how to install on thunderbird 6/7/8/.. and higher?
well, use vim, which is able to edit ziped xpi files.
vim quote_colors-0.3-tb+sm.xp
inavigate to: install.rdf
and change <em:maxVersion>7.*</em:maxVersion>
save & install it!

Sweet! (+future feature?) Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Sweet add-on! I count it among my most fav ones. (I was spoiled by having the "Highlight Text" addon that's since, no longer supported)

feature request: ability to customize colors (Highlight Text had this) :^)

issue: on occasion, after I've selected a section of text, then click Highlighter, the highlight extends beyond the precise selected text; undoing it and selecting/clicking it results in the identical behavior.
caveat: I occasionally drag'n'drop text from a webpage, so it could be occurring with those; I'll have to monitor it further; [apologies if I missed the "support section" for issues]

Again, nice add-on! I appreciate it!!

I like the add-on -- thanks! There are a couple of modifications that would make it easier to use.
- I would like to use a keyboard shortcut to apply the most recently used color.
- I would like to be able to toggle a color on and off. Right now, if I try to toggle a color on before typing, with the idea of toggling it off after typing some words, what I get is the color being applied to the background of the whole message; and this can't be undone with control-z.
- If it's too much trouble to do one of the above, then I would like to either be able to get some color with the right mouse button, or else move the pencil icon farther over to the left. I use half the screen on my laptop for my compose window, and with this configuration, the pencil is not visible.
- Note that the ease of use features I am looking for are built into the Tag Toolbar add-on. Give it a try and you'll see what I mean. Of course in this case just typing a number won't be sufficient -- I know I will need something like a control or alt key as well.
- In addition to highlighting text, I would also like an easier way of changing the color of the text. But this is lower priority than the above stuff.
- This next remark has nothing to do with this add-on, but man I wish I could use a keyboard shortcut to make a hyperlink when I'm composing email. And in general I wish I could personalize thunderbird more.

I waited a long time... Rated 5 out of 5 stars

...for someone to develop an extension like this; thank you André Rodier! On a planet far, far away I used MS Outlook and became accustomed to the highlighting feature. I switched to TB years ago and have missed the ability to highlight text ever since.

Very nice idea. Small problem though: if one highlights text with a non-standard font, say Comic Sans, then clearing the highlight sometimes (but not always) changes the font to variable width.
Looking forward to the next version.

Great, this bug is really old, and it's one of the very annoying thing that was difficult to fix due to the poor quality of the developer documentation available...
By googling around, however, I have been able to fix it, and it's now on github (4/07/2011). I submit my addon for review now, the official package should be available for update (hopefully) soon.

Excellent! This is a most useful add-on. I would like to ask for the option to highlight INCOMING messages too, which -to me at least- would be also very useful. Wonder if that's possible?

Thanks for the feedback

Everything is possible, as long as I have the time. However, for now, I need to fix some bugs first.
It's already very difficult to find complete and up to date documentation to develop thunderbird extensions, and it's take too much time to do simple things. Once I'll be entirely satisfied with the quality of the extension, I'll add this function.
Feel free to help, however, the code is on github ;-)

Excellent Add-On, absolutely indispensable for me! Now I don't have to use yucky Word-Copy/Paste to try and produce highlighted text in emails anymore ;)

Anyway, I found out why the highlights are not shown in Outlook, see here: http://pages.citebite.com/k7f4e3t5ugne

As a workaround, I removed all occurrences of " !important" (minus the quotes) from the file "overlay.js" in the extension's folder in the Thunderbird profile folder.

Excellent work!. I have a comment, is that the e-mail I send and
receiving other e-mail clients, such as Outlook, they do not see
highlighted text, and I change if I see the highlighted text from those customers
e-mail I receive.

Yes, I am not totally surprised, as Outlook html engine uses the same as the one from word, which is not totally compatible. We have the choice between trying to produce incompatible html to fit outlook poor implementation, or to hope that outlook will involve soon.
I think I may add an option for this.

I nearly dropped using Thunderbird and going back to Gmail's web email client because there is no highlight text function like the web based email client has. Thanks a lot for this more than welcome add-on!
