Why was FiltaQuilla created?
This addon was originally written to demonstrate features that I also added to the mailnews backend, that allow custom filter actions and search terms to be created. This allows extensions to use the power power of Thunderbird's filters and virtual folders in new ways without the complexity of modifying the C++ backend.
What's next for FiltaQuilla
This extension is mostly in maintenance mode. So I will make sure that it works with new versions of Thunderbird, but am not adding new features.

Who is R Kent James?
I create addons for Thunderbird, have served as a Mozilla addon editor in the past, and am currently a Thunderbird core reviewer.
Most of my addons consist of attempts to push Thunderbird in new directions, and frequently have required changes to the backend to allow extensions to do new things.
Most of my current effort is devoted to my ExQuilla addon, which adds support for Thunderbird to use Exchange Web Services to access email and contacts.
