Ads aren't the issue. Bugs are! Rated 2 out of 5 stars
I have written 5 star reviews in the past but I have to ding it a several stars and I will explain why.
There is a big debate about ads and I think that we should take a nuanced view to them. I am on a crusade to put a stone-cold stop to all of the spying. However, the public should not delude themselves though. It can cost $$$$ to build and maintain websites. When it comes to tech the public is probably too trained to get something for nothing. The entire "freemium" business model is a bad one. Give something away for years, take on investors, take big losses and then scramble for a way to actually make a dime. By that time the product or service has been devalued into oblivion and then institutions get tempted to resort to unsavory means of making money.
My point is the entire industry really needs a new business model. What we need is a system of strictly limited and ethical tracking which is just enough to supply a few modest and tasteful ads and referrals while strictly maintaining user privacy and choice. It could involve users by perhaps asking them which ads they like( or don't) and make it so easy to operate that it passes the granny test. If your 80 year old grandma can't figure it out with a click or two then back to the drawingboard!
The reason why I am dropping stars is because the performance issues still are not fixed. This has been a known issue for years and there is no fix in sight. The icon is buggy as hell and randomly jumps around or off the page entirely.
Lastly, with a combination of other add-ons such as NoScript, Ghostery and a few others ads can be stopped dead in their tracks without any direct adblockers- making this a troublesome redundancy.
