SmartPrint

Warning: Does Not Work With 2.0.0.14 (Includes Screenshots) Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I downloaded SmartPrint when I found it in April because it sounded like such a great idea; I often find when I print up web pages that I'll end up with a page that's got only a couple of lines or some footer crap on it ... and, of _course_, that page _always_ requires a new sheet of paper. I was excited to see that someone had found a solution for that situation, because, frankly, it's really pretty annoying. Since I don't print from Firefox very often, I didn't have an opportunity to try out the extension until this week, and it's been nothing but an Excedrin headache waiting to happen.

The best way to explain what happens when I attempt to use this (in Fx 2.0.0.14, which the "See All Versions" page says SmartPrint's compatible with) is to illustrate it, so I took four screenshots of what I get (if you're using a wi-fi network that has the craptastic SonicWALL installed, my apologies — you won't be able to see them; it's a truly bizarre situation, because SonicWALL allowed me to go to TinyPic's home page and complete the process of uploading my shots, but then it wouldn't let me _look_ at them when I was done ... _whatever_).

1) This is the odd little options sheet that slides out of the title bar. As you can see, the rest of the box, the part with the "following features," is ... well ... _missing_. The only thing to do with this, really, is to press the Esc key.

2) This is the result I got when I decided to print up my most recent diary from The Daily Plate. So far, so good: The Print dialogue box was exactly what I was expecting.

3) However, _this_ is what happened after I clicked on the Print Preview button. This happens EVERY SINGLE TIME, and clicking on either Cancel button does nothing ...

4) ... except this. And this doesn't go away at all. The only way to dismiss either of these dialogues is to Force Quit, rinse, and repeat.

Since it doesn't work at all, I gave SmartPrint one star. I felt that an extra star was in order because it's a great idea that will be helpful once it's properly up and running — but I just couldn't bring myself to give it two stars, if only because upon further consideration, I felt that that would be misleading to anyone interested in trying it out.

Autofill Forms

In the words of the immortal Peter Griffin, "Aww, SWEET!" Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is great!

I fill out a lot of "freebie" request forms online, and it takes forever to type in all my address info, so I was looking for something to speed up the process. After all, less typing means a little more time to hunt down more freebies.

I downloaded this on the strength of the positive reviews here, and it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. It's been mentioned that there's a bit of a learning curve involved in getting this set up, and that it takes a while to flesh out the profile. That's true -- what's also true is that after you spend that while, it's REALLY helpful if you click the "Apply" button at the top. (You live, you learn, I guess.) When I first opened this, I felt a little intimidated by all the fields that needed filling out -- especially given some of the comments I'd read here. But the entire process -- from downloading through dismissing the finished preferences window (including the two times I had to fill it out) -- took less than 10 minutes, and it worked on the first try. Even after more than 10 years online, I tend to still be a little browser-challenged (usually with plug-ins -- or is that, plug-and-pray-ins?), so this was a rarity and a relief.

I also really like the ability to have more than one profile at a time. I use a fake name and phone number and a "black hole" address for my freebie requests, but I use my real info for online shopping and requesting info from businesses. A quick click on the arrow on the toolbar button lets me switch back-and-forth in a blink. Niiice.

A sizeable "thank you" to the developer -- this is going to save me a LOT of time.

LeechBlock

Fantastic! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

It works just like it's supposed to, and it took under a minute for me to set it up. This is incredible.
