My Reviews

Mozilla Labs - Prism

A better alternative Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Prism was a very good idea, but it suffered from a serious design flaw: Each app created with Prism generated a separate profile directory, with considerable duplication of files, which was a mammoth waste of disk space.

Chrome offers similar functionality in its core, without Prism's drawbacks.

Download Flash and Video

Works well for most video sites Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is an excellent add-on which is very good at what it does. For most video sites it makes downloading very easy.

2 very small quibbles:

(1) It does not work with Dailymotion.com. The files that it finds are not correct. This is a problem with almost all other video downloaders that I have tried. Apparently Dailymotion does something non-standard. There is one service that works with Dailymotion: www.savevideo.me.

(2) "Download Flash & Video" normally uses Firefox's internal file-save functionality to download files. It can be configured to use the extension Down Them All as alternative. However, once in awhile it randomly "forgets" to launch DTA, and reverts to the internal file manager. I don't know whether the problem is with FNV or with DTA.

Memory Fox

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Using FF beta 9 in Win XP, Memory Fox 7.4 seems to be doing a great job. FF is hogging just as much memory as ever according to the Windows Task Manager, but it doesn't bog down or crash.

Memory Fox 7.5.3 does nothing for me.

Mozilla Labs - Prism

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Prism does what it promises to do, but at a high cost: Each app gets its own profile with a large number of duplicated files--a major waste of valuable disk space.

The comparable functionality found in Chrome and its clones (Chromium, Iron, Dragon) does not exact such a penalty.

CuteMenus - Crystal SVG

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This worked with 4.0b1 but stopped working when I upgraded to 4.0b2.

Compatibility reporter won't let me submit a revised report.

FireFTP

Why it doesn't work with 4.0 Rated 5 out of 5 stars

@John Ranger: Not necessarily because 4.0 is beta, but because the 4.0 code is significantly different from the 3.x code, and therefore some extensions (such as this one) will have to be rewritten.

FireFTP

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This has long been one of my favorite extensions.

I am now using FF 4.0 beta, and it is the best Firefox ever. I would love to get rid of clunky old 3.6.x, but I would have to find a different--and probably lesser--ftp client.

Please update FireFtp to work with FF 4.x so that users can continue to have the best ftp client along with the best web browser. Thanks.

NetVideoHunter Downloader

EXCELLENT Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is one of the finest pieces of software I have ever used, bar none.

I struggled with half a dozen video "grabbers" that didn't live up to expectations before I was fortunate enough to find this one.

Net Video Hunter is simple and unobtrusive, and it has successfully grabbed every video I have tried. It even captures the filenames correctly--something that some others fail to do.

Five stars! I'd give it more if I could.

NetVideoHunter Downloader

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

@Syn: The version offered on the netvideohunter.com home page is an old one that won't load in FF 3.6.6. But the current version available on this page does work.

Mailfrom

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Had trouble getting it to work till I realized that I had to go into Tools/Options/Applications and select Yahoo to handle mailto links. Setting the add-on's own option doesn't do it. This should be better documented.

Mailfrom

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I withdraw my previous negative review. I discovered that I had to specify the add-on in the Applications area of the main FF Options, and not just in the add-on's own options.

This should be better documented.
