After being copied (not always well) by other browser manufacturers, Firebug has once again leaped ahead with new interface oriented breakpoints in 1.5 ( Breaking on attribute mutation and adding/removing of children is a particularly valuable addition to allow you to understand how a large web application works and what code makes the changes to the UI that you are observing.

Firebug was already essential equipment for any web developer using Firefox, and remains the best tool of its kind for any browser and one of the best reasons for using Firefox as a principal development environment.

It does what is advertised fairly well, but I find Tooltips much more useful than hyperlinks for this kind of extension.

This tool is the one critical tool to use for Web Development. As with all software, it is not perfect, but I know of no other software that does all of the things it does, and it continues to be developed and improved. The Console and DOM element inspection alone are important, but it also offers control and experimentation with CSS rules, tracking requests and responses, etc. Unquestionably recommended for all web developers.
