Mozilla Labs - Prism

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I tried WebRunner (former Prism, they have the same AppCreator GUI), please read my previous review March 13, 2011.

It has a strong memory leak: after 12h on the same site it can reach to 122MB, it takes 2 - 3 times more memory than Prism... but have some interesting features and better look.

I have a triple FF installation (with Prism 1.0b2), so when I install an Add-On it goes to all 3 FFs. The results:

1. FF3.5 (my Prism App Creator platform): WebRunner is incompatible to FF3.5, I did not try to cheat the Compatibility Check, so WebRunner is inactive in Extensions window... IS THAT RIGHT? When I clicked "Create WebRunner Application" in menu, the AppCreator GUI shows up!!!... but not worked. By the way the Prism stopped to work too;

2. FF3.6 (my Safe Surf platform): I installed WebRunner here but it did NOT work, probably due to some add-ons, maybe Prism 1.0b2..., that stopped to work here too;

3. FF4RC (my Testing platform): WebRunner WORKED fine. Prism is not compatible to FF4 (inactive).

That is the solution for the Prism addicts and FF4: FF4RC + WebRunner v4.0b12, if you don't mind to waste some memory.

For myself I uninstalled the WebRunner and I kept my old and stable platform: FF3.5 + Prism 1.0b2 (see my previous review).

Mozilla Labs - Prism

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Guys,
I am a big fan of Prism/Refractor add-on, so I am very sad to say that: Prism became an INACTIVE project of Mozilla Labs!

Mozilla Labs has not been working actively on Prism since early 2008. The team responsible for development of Prism, on the past 3 years, set up Salsita Software few months ago to focus on the ongoing development of WebRunner: Prism is now WebRunner! Last February, Prism was renamed back to its first name, according to Salsita.

WebRunner (former Prism) still free, available for downloading (as FF add-on XPI v4.0b12 only), at salsitasoft.com, and open-source available at Trac project.

My last words for Prism: I practically don't use Bookmarks anymore, my often-visited sites are ALL in Prism in my Start menu and Desktop. Prism is a plain, fast 40MB RAM Firefox... a FF with some add-ons can easily reaches to 160MB RAM. Thanks, Mozilla Labs.

For you, Prism addicts, I give you my last advice: the best Prism platform I found is FF3.5* + Prism 1.0b2. I suggest to keep a separated FF3.5 installation (from 3.6 or 4.0) just to create your Prism applications.

Prism 1.0b3 have some problems with window buttons depending on the add-ons installed in FF.

Prism 1.0b2 is not compatible with FF3.6 (there is shortcut for that but) some sites can't even start if application is created into FF3.6 (again) depending on the add-ons installed in FF.

We all know that few features are missing on Prism, but I will give WebRunner a try (I don't like the name, I don't like the logo), if it does not work better than Prism I will keep the platform described above.

Prism 1.0b2 update not suggested Rated 2 out of 5 stars

NOPE! It (1.0b2) is NOT working fine with FF3.0.11, as well.
Some of the problems found:
1. All applications start with "blank page", need to click the "home button";
2. Applications do not keep window size. They start with default size, need to maximize;
3. Cannot open more than one application simultaneously;

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.0b2).  This user has other reviews of this add-on.

Prism 1.0b2 update suggested for FF3.5.2 only Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Yesterday I installed FF3.5.2 and surprisingly all the Prism stuff came to work fine back again. The issues below are fixed.

MR Tech Toolkit

Export bookmarks DOES working with FF3.5.2 Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Yesterday I installed FF3.5.2 and the bookmarks "Export to HTML" feature came to life back again even with MR Tech Toolkit installed. After one year... (see below). Of course it was an interference from another add-on. Which one? I don't know... Mel Reyes asked me to investigate it but (sorry) I had no time to Bisection Test of more than 50 add-ons I have installed. I decided for a roundabout: Keep My Boomarks ! (currently) 0.1.4 to export to a local folder, but it is a FF3.0.x add-on... so I tested FF3.5.2 bookmarks export (MR Tech Toolkit activated) and everything works fine.

... After install MR Tech Toolkit (formerly Local Install) 6.0.1 on Firefox 3.0.3, the Firefox is UNABLE TO EXPORT BOOKMARKS TO HTML. If I disable MR Tech Toolkit add-on, then bookmarks export is possible"

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (6.0.3.4).
