My Reviews

Hide My IP VPN

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I chose this extension because the devs are active in replying to concerns of the users, and primarily because the extension I was using thus far is no longer working properly in FireFox v57+.

It works fine for the most part, and does what it says. No issues there. But there are 2 issues that turn me off:

1. No separation between private and regular windows. If VPN is enabled in Private, it is also automatically activated in regular window. This is an issue because a lot of sites I use flag this as a security issue and either temp-deactivate my account, or auto-logoff me, or send me a security email alert, which means I get a slew of emails in 5 minutes of enabling VPN. My previous VPN had the option to enable only in Private window. I hope the devs would consider implementing this feature here also.

2. FREE gateways are ridiculously slow. Almost unusable. Sure, FREE options are usually slower because of high traffic volumes and lesser resources allocated, but these are slower even by that standard.

Video Downloader professional

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

It works for the most part, but the reason I'm giving it Average is because of the bizarre decision it makes to add video downloads initiated from a private window into the regular window's download queue. The private window is completely capable of having its own download queue, so why do this?

English Popup Dictionary

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

It does what it says, which is great, and even more great is the fact that I don't have to manually install any dictionaries or do much configuration. The only sore point for me is the need to double click a word to highlight it, which is less practical (IMHO) than a selecting a word with the mouse and getting to see its meaning via the context menu. Some websites, including news outlets, set up scripts to show popups on double click, which is why a context menu option is more desirable in such cases. I hope the developers introduce this option in later versions.

Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Its great! It does what it says and has a huge number of voices and dialects to choose from. Only criticism, if that, is that the quick menu icon is almost transparent and you don't notice it if you're not looking for it. (Disclaimer: I have a brown colored theme installed, so it might as well be that it shows up well for other colored backgrounds)

Video DownloadHelper

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Useless after v57. I went directly from v56 to v59 (current version) and now every time I try to use this add-on, it asks me install ANOTHER add-on for it to work. Looking for other add-ons.

ContextSearch web-ext

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

It does what it says, lets me search through custom search engines thru the context menu, but It is unnecessarily complicated, and the reliance on a 3rd party for adding search engines is a turn-off. Else, you have to add all the fields manually, which might not be the best way for a common Joe. There are a few other extensions that let you add search engines through bookmark keywords, which seems like a very easy way and doesn't involve manual configurations or 3rd parties. I wish this was an option here.

For now, I'm using this one because its the only one I have found that supports POST, but I will be looking for alts.

Days Dawn

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Been my theme for years....I think I'm the only one using it though, but I love it.

Context Search Origin

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

The POST workaround does not work for some websites, mostly forums-type websites, wherein the search result URL does not show the text that was searched for OR if it has a random string generated in the URL along with the text, which changes with very search (kinda like a unique search ID).

Other than that, its very intuitive to use and easy to add search engines to once you create the "Searches" bookmark folder. Can't get simpler than this.

Its just for the lack of POST support that I am forced to use another extension called "ContextSearch web-ext", even though it is way more complex to set up and use than this one.

Save Tab URLs

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

SaveTabs

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

It needs an auto-save feature, to save tab-list after a certain custom amount of time, say, 30 minutes, or 1 hour. The app I previously used called "Save My Tabs" had this feature, which is very useful because Firefox's session restore fails every so often and this app can help restore the tabs in case of such eventuality. Without auto-save, its of little use.

Smart HTTPS (add-on SDK)

Auto-adding domains to whitelist is not a great feature Rated 3 out of 5 stars

What this extension does is it tries to load a page @ https, and if it does not support it, it automatically adds the page to its whitelist. This is a very flawed feature because almost NONE of advertising pop-ups and banners support HTTPS (and why would they? they are built on exploiting my privacy), and as a result they all get auto-added to the whitelist in huge numbers. This, according to me, makes this a pretty flawed extension.

At least give user the control of whether he wants to auto-add domains to the whitelist or not.

Another problem is that the whitelist works on entire URL rather than the overall domain name. It seems wildcards are not supported. While I can always manually type the domain name in the settings page, this takes away from its ease of use.

Save My Tabs

Almost perfect, except one missing feature Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Really, its unobtrusive, simple to use and does what it says. Its almost perfect.

The one thing I ask the creators to incorporate is a feature to clear the text files periodically, like says every week or every month, with an option to retain the last x number of days.

The reason I ask is, I installed this extension in September of last year and set it to activate every 15 minutes. Because its so unobtrusive I kinda forgot about it and came to back to see that my Firefox Profile folder has 29K files! A feature to periodically clear the files would help prevent this by a huge margin.

Disconnect Search

Breaks Google. More trouble than its worth. Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I liked the idea that it does not let Google or other search engines track your searches, and in that respect, it works just fine.

But in doing so, it breaks a lot of google functionalities. Google Bookmarks does not work. Google Play does not work. I needed to disable this add-on whenever I had to use either of those services.

However, since yesterday, I could no longer login to my Google account at all. That was the last straw for me. I am disabling this add-on till it works seamlessly with Google.

I hope they update it soon.

Disconnect

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

It works very well and I am glad to have found it. However, ever since I updated to Firefox v34, I have noticed that the add-on randomly stop responding. It will suddenly stop showing the count of blocked requests and indeed stops blocking these. I need to disable the add-on, restart FF, enable the add-on and restart FF again in order to get it working again, which is not always fine cause sometimes I have important tabs open and it becomes inconvenient to do this. I hope they fix this.

Currently using FF v35, and it exhibits the same problem.

Like a Boleta

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Nice background, but the text color / shading is horrible! Making the text black with white shading would have made is much more readable.

Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-Out (TACO)

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

It works when it manages to start. Ever since I updated to Firefox v26, it is a 50:50 chance that this plugin is enabled. Sometimes it starts, and sometimes it gets disabled saying it is not compatible with this version of Firefox. Same problem has carried forward to Firefox v27 also.

Please fix this inconsistency.

Feedly - Beyond Google Reader

Easy, but does not remember by filter settings Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Its easy to use, and automatically imports my Google Reader feeds, exactly how I had organized them, which is a huge plus. I would have given it a 5 had it not been for the fact that it does not remember my filter settings. I want it to show me all the posts, not just the unread ones. But I have to change the filter preferences manually, not only every time I log in, but also for every individual feed. This is a big downer for me, in an otherwise awesome app. I hope the developers incorporate a permanent filter setting for this under Preferences.

Skip Addon Compatibility Check

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I installed this add-on, but what I am really interested is in something that lets me install outdated add-ons that are not compatible with my current firefox version - in particular the 'customizegoogle' (cg) add-on. I have found that the add-on keeps on working in newer versions even if it is deemed outdated for that version. Because of a crash, I had to make a fresh installation of Firefox and now I can no longer install the cg add-on. Please let me know if this add-on will help me in that :) Sry for the length of the post.

ReloadEvery

A couple of feature requests. Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Does what it claims to do. Nothing more and nothing less.

I do have a couple of requests for future versions.

1. Allow the user to specify different reload time for each tab. Right now, the same time is applied to all enabled tabs.

2. Please add a feature to switch to the tab on reload. I know how this can bug some people, so of course, it's be an option that would need to be turned on for that specific tab.
