(Forgive me, for German is not one of the languages I speak.)

But while I do not speak it, I do not agree that I "don't have to care about this extension."

There are disturbing implications to this plug-in. My concern is inspired by the author's justification of its existence with an appeal to aesthetics, convenience and officialdom: "...in the eyes of many it is cluttering written language in an unnecessary way & it's furthermore not part of official German spelling rules." I am surprised to hear egalitarian language referred to as "clutter," all the more surprising considering Germany's leadership role in developing international guidelines for gender-neutral language.

Inclusion is only an inconvenience for those who are already guaranteed privilege.

The same thing happens in English and elsewhere, with grumblings about the inconvenience, ugliness and visual clutter of using *fair* language. Fair language reflects actuality and possible outcomes, rather than wasteful assumptions and stereotypes.

Similar complaints are made at more profound junctions of progressive social change, anywhere one group gets closer to the privileges and rights enjoyed by their more dominant peers. The dominant group understandably frets and worries about their entitlement, or at least expresses displeasure regarding the inconvenience of what is essentially redistribution of prestige.

Habit and convenience are not good foundations for ethical or moral choices.

Language is thought; changing assumptions is essentially a conscious avoidance of exclusion, which in any once enactment furthers inclusion overall. Assumptions waste potential and aspirations, in insidious ways.

I understand that Binnen-I may not be the most elegant solution, but please, consider its aims. Is it really ruining the German language, or worthy of being called an eye-cancer (as some other posters have said). It may be illegible now, but in 20 years? Humans are amazing, we can do anything What's really at stake? Changing harmful habits and oppressive legacies calls for participation, cooperation and empathy, not denial. The smallest gestures of daily life can be seen as opportunities for solidarity and a better future together, rife with mutual respect and honour.

Best wishes to you all.
