My Reviews

Tab Groups

Great continuation Rated 5 out of 5 stars

While often I moan about the bloat of features in core Firefox, I do not understand why this incredibly useful feature was dropped. It had become central to the way I use FireFox and I was rather annoyed at this.

Luckily Quicksaver picked it up immediately and has continued maintaining and developing it. It's probably received more TLC from him than it would ever had from the Mozilla devs, who sometimes seem to have the attention span of a gnat.

Classic Theme Restorer (Fx29-56)

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Occasionally a bit confusing to use, but essential for making Firefox's UI sane again. Thankfully it's very well documented.

I definitely suggest you save your settings (to a file or Sync) once you have got things set up to your satisfaction so you don't have to remember how you did things when you install it on a different computer

With this theme recent versions of Firefox are actually quite tolerable. I might actually be ablre to use FF as my main browser again. Thanks

Rise of the Tools

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Brilliant extension, combined with a theme that kills the Chrome-style title-bar, Thunderbird is now usable. You have helped save my sanity.

Great Theme Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I'm not mad about the icons, but using Thunderbird without Silvermel is a harrowing experience. I absolutely hate the Chrome style combined Title-bar/Tool-bar/whatever of the default theme and generally the default theme sucks and hurts my eyes. With the Rise of The Tools extension Thunderbird is actually usable again. Thank you!

Interesting Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Interesting little plugin. I've always wanted to be able to view the data Telemetry submits, and this allows that. It would be nice if it provided some info as to what the data actually means, but at least I'm now able to view it easily. provides an overview of how Telemetry works. Interestingly, there seems to be very little detailed documentation about Telemetry that is easily available. It seems to be a case of trawling through source code, blog posts, Bugzilla comments and IRC logs.

Trueblock Plus

A good idea poorly executed Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I applaud the sentiment behind this addon and hope it will become a viable alternative to Adblock Plus, but as long as it retains the advertising code of Adblock Plus 2.x, I cannot use it.

I will continue to watch this addon with great interest and hope it develops into a real alternative. Until then I will continue using Adblock Plus 1.3.10

Firefox 3 Aero theme for Firefox 4+

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thank you! I don't know how they managed it, but the new default Windows Aero theme for FF is even uglier than the old default GTK theme.

If Mozilla are going to force me to use Firefox 10 ESR by discontinuing 3.6, than at least I will now be spared having transparency all over my menu bar.

EDIT: I like Aero, I just think that transparency belongs in the background - effects, transitions, background windows, borders and title bars. Transparency on active windows is just distracting and annoying. Modern UI designers are so obsessed with shiny they forget the basics.

Silly, pointless and great fun :)

Disable Add-on Compatibility Checks

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Works as advertised. Now I can use the last decent version of Adblock Plus with Seamonkey 2.6.1

EDIT 20 January 2012 : It also allows me to continue using my favourite Firefox theme in 9.0.1

Adblock Plus

Sold Out Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I have been a long time user of Adblock Plus and have actually donated a small amount to the developer, unlike most users who expect a free ride.

However I cannot accept the latest change to Adblock Plus, which is BY DEFAULT allowing "acceptable ads" by "partners" in other words "If you pay us we won't block you".

I will be un-installing Adblock Plus as soon as I find an acceptable alternativve, which I am confinent will soon appear.

To those of you who would continue using Adblock Plus I suggest occasionally making a donation to your favourite addons, so the developers doesn't end up pulling these stunts.

Mostly Crystal (for Firefox)

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

The best Firefox theme ever. I use this on all my computers, Linux and Windows and it looks perfect under all OS's and Desktop Environments I have used. I have been using this since the days of Firefox 2.0 and unlike many other theme developers, CatThief can be relied on to keep Mostly Crystal compatible with the latest version of Firefox. The website is also a treasure trove of hints and tips on how to use the many options of Mostly Crystal that can be accessed by hacking userChrome.css .

Old Location Bar

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

One of my must have have add ons.

Thanks for adding the option to disable the go button, and all the other option you added in fact. With that, this add on is now perfect for me.

Thank you.

Old Manage Bookmarks

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Just been using it for a short time but so far, I'm impressed. Far, far better than the native bookmark manager (which would get 1 star if it were an extension). The arrow keys not working is a bit of a disappointment, though. No crashes so far.

I have a feature request, more of a wish actually, as if would probably require serious rewriting. I would love the ability to dock this to the Firefox main window as a tab.

Aquatint III

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Aquatint was always in my opinion the best of the Aqua style themes. The others were too Aqua, and not enough Firefox. Aquatint always struck the right balance. I don't want firefox to look like a generic application. I want it to be recognisable as Firefox, but not an eyesore, and Aquatint has always done this perfectly, when it has been available.

It is a great pity that such a good theme has been abandoned so often by its developers. It is good to see it picked up again, but please, don't get bored and drop it like your predecessors,

SQLite Optimizer

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Just what the doctor ordered! My FF install was getting sluggish and occasionally pausing, this appears to cleared up the worst of that.

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This has to be the most useful general-purpose extension for Firefox - bar none!

I use this daily and find it invaluable. Far better than labourisly typing in markup by hand, or worse, using the often broken rich text editors many websites use.

My wish for this extension would be the addition of user-definable tags and maybe Wiki markup. Otherwise, it fills all my needs.

Video DownloadHelper

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Ridiculously bloated . If I wanted to convert the videos I would use mencoder or ffmpeg. Unfortunately it is still the bast of a bad bunch.

Remove New Tab Button

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thanks for thinking of the people who don't like hacking usercss. Of course, if Mozilla had just followed their interface guidelines you could just drag and drop the button to the "Customise Toolbar" window.

Old Location Bar

At long last Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Old Location Bar is a godsend. I thought nothing could improve on Oldbar, but this extension also changes the Urlbars behaviour as well as appearance, thus removing the need to poke around in about:config (unless you want to, of course)

Sadly, nothing will return our beloved Firefox 2 Location Bar, but Old Location Bar transforms the Firefox 3 Urlbar into a reasonable facsimile thereof.

My only quibble is that there is no apparent way of hiding the "Go" button, something I have never had a use for. An interface to tweak the urlbar settings without diving into about:config would also be nice, but we can't have everything.

The sooner this excellent extension makes it off the experimental list and into the main add-ons pages, the better!
