My Reviews

FT DeepDark

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Very nice - I'm still happy with it after several weeks. Check out the additional customizations at the developer's Stylish page (link in description) - I'm using the "darker urlbar" and floating scrollbars.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (9.4.4).

For me this has worked fine since I installed it around Firefox 3 - now on Firefox 14. The ability to add custom search sites and search strings is fantastic..

I am moving towards Chrome now though and wish I could find something similar for Chrome. Anybody have any suggestions? I still prefer Firefox but as it gets more bloated and less responsive to user needs, and Chrome gets more extensions, I see the future as probably Chrome.

My Translator (Google Translate)

Disabled by Google??? Rated 2 out of 5 stars

This worked for several months but as several reviews have said, it now just says "please wait...". Another Google translate extension that used to work (gTranslate) now gives the message "Suspected terms of service abuse....". Perhaps this is because THIS extension (My Translator) queries Google Translate EVERY TIME you right-click any selection for any reason, and Google considers this abuse?

The "Fast Translation" extension still works well for me:

The other extension that just stopped working (temporarily I hope) is "gTranslate": It provides functionality more similar to this one, but doesn't query Google and show translation until you mouse over the appropriate item in the context menu.

TV-FOX - Watch TV Online

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

This is not completely useless - I was able to view streaming video from C-SPAN and (when I clicked on "Fox News") a local Las Vegas Fox station. But clicking on NBC News, Discovery Channel, and MSNBC got me blank screens. There's no local USA stations in the list of stations.

I would say that maybe it works better for other countries (there's a huge list of countries) -- but all the positive reviews sound like they're written by the same american.

You can tell this is primarily a scam from the aggressive donation solicitation before installation, the attempt to harvest your email after installation, and the many glowing reviews for a mediocre (at best) product.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.4.5).

Browse Images

I have been looking off and on for an extension that would duplicate Opera's slideshow feature (and hopefully be better) - this feature was the only reason for me to use a browser other than Firefox.

Finally! - I came across this extension. It allows you to view all the images that a page links to, in succession, without having to return to the "index" page. You've got a manually controlled slideshow that can be operated in fullscreen with keyboard shortcuts or (with FireGestures) mouse gestures. It duplicates Opera's feature with improvements: it does not get "stuck" when an image link is redirected or when it leads to an html document.

I haven't used the other features much but so far the "save all images" works fine for me and so does the "view all images" unless I have CSS customized with Stylish (which I usually do).

I am amazed at all the complaints about this EXTREMELY USEFUL extension. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I still give it six stars for what it can do!
