My Reviews

Ignore X-Frame-Options

Did not work in my test. Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I took this for test drive and in particular I wanted to fix a problem with https://client01.chat.mibbit.com. It is an IRC web client that will preview URL in chat in an iframe but some sites block this preview triggering console message "Load denied by X-Frame-Options:...". This add on did change me seeing blank iframe to a message "Blocked by Content Security Policy". The result is still not a preview. I am also wanting something that white lists domains as this is not click-jacking case I don't see having X-Frame-Option disabled globally is a good idea. Perhaps disabling it only when white listed domains are in the active tab would be a better solution. Would it be possibly for future versions to address these issues?

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.0.1).

Key config

somewhat limited Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Only 42 items can be assigned shortcuts. No option to add shortcut to "show bookmark toolbar"

Customizable Shortcuts

Description is not clear Rated 2 out of 5 stars

This add on presents a list of predefined shortcuts already in the browser. Menu access is via a toolbar button - I could not find any other method to show settings. I expected an "options" button on "about:addons" page - is there a reason why it does not have one? It does not allow you to add shortcuts for menu items unless they already have a shortcut defined. You can disable existing shortcuts or change them and that worked with Firefox 43.0.1

BugMeNot

Somewhat limited Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Design looks good and was very useful in the past. Now it has limited usefulness because bugmenot.com allows sites to block their domains so you can't use bugmenot to log in. I now encounter this on most of the sites I have wanted to use.

Remove Google Tracking

It worked. Suggested future feature. Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Great work at tackling this problem and it works as described. Just a suggestion, I would like to see support a "5th" pattern namely dragging a URL to the windows desktop (or any text editor) to create a URL shortcut (or URL text string in editor) without the tracking redirect. For example I used a google searched for a blog article series consisting of 21 separate URL postings across 2 years (as there website had no proper indexing) so using the add on now I have to open 21 pages and drag URL 21 times and close 21 pages, but if I could of dragged them directly from result page it would have been the logical and faster way to do it.

Another alternative is to use https://duckduckgo.com as your search engine but that's a work around not a solution as it is not quite the same as a google search results although worth a try.

Update 22/Oct/2015:
I noticed that when doing a google images search, select image - the view image button does not work. I suggest a toolbar button to toggle add on to disabled / enabled would be good idea,

Memory Restart

Good for heavy duty Firefox users Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Sometime Firefox RAM is just way to high and you need to restart before it crashes. I have several dozen add-ons active in Firefox, so Firefox is bound to get memory leaks from unexpected interactions of your add-ons. Even if you don't use many add-ons just try scrolling through Facebook.com, tumblr.com, or Google image search will chew up RAM into the Gigabytes and most likely crash before you get to the end of a huge timeline. These "infinite" pages cause more and more RAM to get locked up in Firefox, so Firefox and other apps performance tends to suffer especially on machines with 2GB RAM or lower. I find that if I let it get anywhere nears 1.5GB Firefox will crash. I think it is probably when Virtual Memory size goes over 2GB that seem to be the problem. This add on lets you see how big (approximately) your "in memory usage" (RAM) has reached. If you see it getting closer to the point of crashing (may vary but you will figure it out what your threshold value is) you can just click the memory usage value (Ticker in bottom right corner of add-on bar) and do a restart. I also have set "Don't load tabs until selected" so restart will take me back to around 300MB RAM use.

Some reviews indicate that restart is occurring unexpectedly, so just to clarify the "Memory Restart Preferences", I set "Firefox memory threshold" to "1500". That setting is when the color changes, and when a auto-restart will occur. When you first install don't use the auto restart just get familiar with how much RAM Firefox is sucking up and tune the threshold for yourself. When you figure out what value you want to use you can use certain web pages to trigger a prompt when a shutdown has been trigger in Firefox so you can tell the difference to a crash. To do that, find a site that makes an alert - http://i.imgur.com/WUJwDqU.png when you close your browser. For example, Mibbit.com has a "Confirm navigate away" option. Most posting/web mail editors will do this as well by default. Keep that page open and use Firefox for a few days, so you can see when an auto restart is triggered as http://i.imgur.com/WUJwDqU.png will pop up when Firefox tries to shutdown. This can be useful if your in them middle of writing something long and you have not saved it and need to abort the restart for a few minutes to cleanup.

If you use Firefox heavily and you notice it using huge amount of RAM and want to do restarts before it crashes this is a useful add-on to help you.

ps. Noticed "[13:56:16.969] TypeError: strings.getString is not a function @ chrome://memoryrestart/content/memoryrestart.js:128" occurring 2 per minute on console log - reported it to developer

Update Nov 2015:
I am using tab groups, "tab group helper" add on , and "Don't load tabs until selected" setting, so most of the tabs are out of sight but you still take a memory hit. Firefox runs better if you don't use too many inactive tabs. For example, having 400 inactive tabs will give you a gigabyte of memory in use on start up . This add on is helpful to keep aware of what memory is in use.

The Middle Mouse Button

A bit too simple Rated 3 out of 5 stars

As stated this is a "very simple" addon, and that causes some quite useful features to be lost. Most browsers now offer middle button click on URL to open link in new tab, but this add-on will override that. The "middlemouse.scrollbarPosition":True config option allow middle click in scroll bar will stop working with this add-on. Compatible with tab mix plus add-on's close/open by clicking in tab bar area in case you use that too.

It would smarter if this add-on only did "back" when you click ANYWHERE THAT IS NOT A URL or the scroll bar area, which would make it a great add-on to enhance existing middle button functions of "open link in New Tab", and "middlemouse.scrollbarPosition":True If you don't have any use for those two features then the add-on is fine even though you loose them.

I did not test with "middlemouse.paste" set to true but should be safe to assume that it will not work as well with this add-on.

Download Statusbar

Tip for clearing status bar Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I am sticking with Firefox 25.0.1 as this is one of the show stoppers add ons preventing me doing an upgrade. It is now in late of 2014 and still not seeing any sign of version 2.x yet, but still working fine with v0.9.10.

Tip:
I noticed a little glitch, sometimes I accidentally generate a file download which has a 256 char name. (Done by "save as image" addon auto name creation on double click.) The file name (as path is too long) fails to download, takes up entire length of the Download Statusbar area, AND it will not popup the context menu so you can not choose "Clear from bar". The workaround is to right click "Download" button in left hand corner and choose "download history" then search for the bad file name, right-click and choose "remove from list" this will clear it from status bar as well.

Open in Private Window

Exactly What I'm looking for too Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Good job and just what I need. As other have mentioned it does not provide a context menu item for the "All bookmarks" view but bookmark toolbar does work. I put my entire collection under in a folder that is on the bookmark toolbar so that is kind of a "workaround". Supporting the "all bookmarks" view can be done "Show Parent Folder " adds items to bookmark context menu so that may be a useful code model to examine. I hope both these add-ons continue to coexist as I will be using them as long as they are available.

Re-Pagination

Essential UI feature for power users Rated 4 out of 5 stars

There is nothing more annoying than news and review sites that split a few paragraphs of the article per page then create a series of linked pages (eg let's say page 1,2 ,3 ... of 11) filled with rubbish adverts or padding you don't need. If you want to save all the article as one page keeping as much of the original style "re-pagination" with a few other tools can do the job. "re-pagination" will load the other 10 pages appended into the current page tab. An article over 11 pages is now one page tab. Once you have this you can then use other ad-dons like "hacktheweb" to remove text and images not needed (like heading and footings repeated 11 times). Finish of your composition with "print Edit" or "UnMHT" to give you a PDF or MHT file with the content you desire.

Not all linked pages are detected but if your lucky it will work with the page you want. For example this review page is "page 1 of 2" but trying "re-pagination" on the "> >" link does not work. A "google.com" search that has muliple pages does work with re-pagination.

I found that some sites generate "doc.getElementByTagName is not a function" message once for each appending (10 pages = 10 pop up alerts). It is annoying but the appending is still successful. An example that gives this message is a google.com search. On some sites each page append may take up to 10 secs, and there is no "page is loading indicator" during the appending so make sure you give "re-pagination" enough time before giving up.

Tested FFX 25.0.1 + Win XP.

As is it is still highly recommended as I have found nothing else that provides this feature.

Toggle Mixed Active Content

Essential UI feature for power users Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is now an essential add-on especially for using bookmarklets. In particular I use the (deprecated) bit.ly bookmarklet (shown here http://bit.ly/1oxz5qj) which loads a small window and uses javascript code on bitly.com so it will fail on SSL URI

I noticed that the button is not loaded when I open a private browser window and this is the first add-on I have seen that has this behavior.

I would like to suggest an optional timer function - that is when you click the button you disable only for a user defined period of time as most of the time I don't have a problem with the mixed content blocking being active I just need it to stop screwing up with my bookmarklets :-)

Enhanced Findbar

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Not working with FFX v25.0.1

To doiken please change title "enhanced findbar" to "Enhanced Findbar" so it appears consistent with other EVERY OTHER ADDON in addons manager listing.

RSFind! Mod

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

A good time saver if you have the need to extract multiple links from a page that use file sharing hosts. Works well with clipboard grabbing down-loaders like Jdownloader. Tip: Greatis Toys utility's (windows program) has a Clipboard feature - keeps the clip history up to 50 clips. That tool let's you set a hotkey to show what you have copied to clipboard. A very useful triple combination if your doing a lot of quick copying and pasting.

Automatic Save Folder

Say goodbye to repeatedly changing the save folder Rated 4 out of 5 stars

If your the type of person who has a collection of folders you use for saving web content (e.g. banking statement, e-bills, receipt folders) this add-on can save you some of that repetitive changing folders. You can have a specific folders for specific sites and that is just what I was looking for.

I have tested beta version update from developer's website with FireFoX 25.0.1 and works well. As the developer has said you need this version if run FFX 17 or higher. I had to change some of the setting defaults to get it to behave like what I expected from the screenshot and in a way that I liked. It has lots of options to customize it to work the way you want.

Here are the settings I chose - it may help if your not sure what to try.

Page1 tab:
select "Always ask me where to save"
View options ... "Always show"
Suggest all possible folder
View the list of folders
Right click (tick both boxes)

Page 2 tab:
filtering "4,1"

Filters tab:
add a test filter (and make sure the catch all filter is "*", "*" is at bottom of list)
If the file doesn't match any filter save to - "last folder" and "memorize on site-by-site"

Thank you Cyan for a very comprehensive feature set. This one goes in my must have collection.

I was able use this for a firefox 6.x (partially worked). Tested this addon with "enhanced findbar" on FFX 25.0.1 but it broke "find next" (F3 shortcut), so sadly retiring this addon now.

Memory Restart

Needs more flexibility (suggestion) Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Great addon as most modern browsers these days are basically memory PIGS when you have multiple tabs open. The addon indicator reminds when I need to cull some tabs or restart. On the subject of RESTART, I really need to have an option to suppress showing the file menu restart option as I already have this being added by another addon. I don't want to use the file menu option you have added in "memory-restart " unless it can be configured WITHOUT a confirmation prompt but still keeping confirmation for the add-on bar because it is to easy to accidentally click the indicator.

An earlier comment mentions spam on console log - I am seeing "https://careers.mozilla.org" message from tabzilla.js does this have anything to do with this extension?
