Re: Warning

The site is part of a defamation campaign against us. This is apparently what happens when we become too successful at warning people about scams. You can learn more about it here:

I think this is the most useful security addon for Firefox ever. I've been using it for a while now, and I find it goes well with other addons. For example, since I have NoScript, I can use the WOT ring to decide if I should allow scripts on that page.

Eu gostei bastante deste complemento, pois ao entrar em um determinado site, de cara ele nos mostra que este site pode ser confiável ou totalmente inseguro!!!!!! Pra mim, nota 10!!!!!

There are are big problem with sites such as WOT. 1) WOT only compiles information on the Domain. If http://www.wannabe.com/.../.../... is a spam, porn site, guess which one gets the blame. Right. The wannabe.com domain is slammed. 2) People who contribute don't know the difference between wannabe.com and the offending page. They write reviews like it's the fault of the domain, rather than those who buy the bandwidth.
If people don't know how to write a review, shut-up, and leave it to those who do. WOT is only as good as people make it.

Re: Problems

Our system computes reputations only for hostnames. If a domain is hosting spammers, you should expect to see its reputation suffer as a result.

Chuckling in agreement to X forgery's statement of the obvious, however WOT -might- a semi-accurate tool in finding sites that piss people off...for valid or invalid reasons. This might actually be useful in catching googlespam links, I'll check before tossing out.

*Tosses grain of salt. Err, brick. Big brick.*

Re: Chuckling

See the response below. Our reputations tell you how much people trust a website, in which case "accuracy" is defined as whether the reputation reflects the majority opinion. Should you find some reputations only semi-accurate, please don't hesitate to share your rating with the rest of us.

another FAILED experiement in "truth" by consensus Rated 1 out of 5 stars

It accomplishes no goods via wiki*dia, and is of little value in WOT.

What? WOT is naive? nooo, really?

A bunch of people you do not know (much about) green light a site. Is that site safe? Or are the vast majority of reviewers imbeciles?

Trust people you know in real life? sure, if they can qualify their respective site endorsements

site "review" comments range from fecklessly pedantic, to drooling moron "it works for me" or "nice". no thanks

Will Obviously Tossout

Re: failed

You should learn how the system works before judging it a failure. Did you know that ratings are weighted based on statistical analysis of each user's rating behavior? It makes the system a meritocracy where not everyone's ratings are considered equally reliable. Did you know that the silly comments, which are inevitable, don't affect the reputation? The reputation is computed from user ratings, not the comments you see on the scorecard. Still, we don't claim the reputations are the "truth" or that you'll always agree with them, they simply offer you additional information when surfing the web.

Here's a relevant quote from our "Common misconceptions" FAQ:

"We realize the average web user isn't a security professional and we don't expect them to go out and investigate random websites for safety. We have an active group of experienced users who review sites for technical safety and help the average user avoid security threats. We only expect users to share their experiences with the websites they already know, because they are uniquely qualified to do that. Being able to learn from other people's experiences is the whole reason for this service."

It's saved my bacon Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I love this add-on, it's saved me from some nasty stuff over the last few years I've had it installed. It's hardly noticeable until a bad site pops up.

I haven't noticed much in the way of abuse mentioned by others (such as giving a site a bad rating because you don't like it). Besides, you can always carry on and view a site that's got a poor rating, and you can also see why people are giving it the rating that they do from the comments.

I'd like to see more sites reviewed, but that'll come I guess.

The idea is definitely good. Unfortunately, many users abuse this tool:(.....

For example: A particular person may hate a site. He/She gives a negative rating and tells their friends also to do so!

Did love this tool initially, but now it seems to have deteriorated a lot...

WOT=essential tool Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I have been using WOT for over a year and a half. I would not consider 'browsing the web' without it. I have been virus/worm/trojan free since adding WOT to my arsenal. Avoiding the dangerous sites is three quarters of your malware protection, and WOT will advise you if you are venturing into dangerous territory. I am a risk taker (and a 'grey hat'), and do venture beyond safe grounds, but WOT warns me whenever I do...if you look at my ratings, they are mostly 'reds'. WOT is an essential tool in anybody's defense system!

Great add-on!!
This is best one kind of this.

And, better than some other ones because these averages are decided mostly by human.

Thanks for WOT Services!!!

This is a horrible add-on. Ratings are inconsistent and not representative at all of the malware and maliciousness of the web sites.
And today I saw that a single rating on a major corporation got it a "poor" reputation.
This add-on does not work, because people use it maliciously.
I just uninstalled it and hope you do the same.

Re: Horrible

Ratings are private, you can't see them. You probably saw a comment on the scorecard. Comments don't affect the reputation and leaving them is optional. Still, we would be curious to hear which major corporation has a poor reputation. Please send us a note or post to our forum:
http://www.mywot.com/forum

Reputations aren't only about malware. They tell you how much other people trust a website, which many people find helpful when exploring websites they don't know.

I was so excited to find this add-on, but surprised to find many of the websites I visit all the time for my work (like daily.sightline.org, a web based northwest environmental news service) to be listed as having a poor reputation. That's a piece of cuss. Looks like people have been flagging websites they don't agree with politically. It also slowed down websites loading noticeably. I just uninstalled WOT and wish the developers to find a way around this.

Re:

It looks like the site's reputation had suffered due to spam, not politics. If you have concerns about a site's reputation, rate the site yourself and bring it up on our forum. This isn't a support forum and your comment may go unnoticed.

The add-on shouldn't slow down page loading unless you have blocking enabled. You can turn it off from the settings along with any other features you may find annoying:
