Didn't work for me Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Installed the add-on in Firefox 45 and it doesn't seem to do anything. When text is highlighted, no results appear in toolbar, no Word Count is listed in right-click context menu, and Alt-Shift-C does zip.

Great app but does not work in 45.0.1

It works in PaleMoon if you roll it back one version. Rated 3 out of 5 stars

In order to make it work you need to run version 2.0.rev281.1. Then it will work in both the context menu and the status bar- which lives in PaleMoon and has been obliterated in Failfox.

The latest version was as if it wasn't there. Run PM and roll this back one version and it will work just fine.

EDIT: It actually is working- too well. It displays in both the context menu and the status bar- and then it remained there until I removed the extension. There was no way to toggle it and even Organize Status Bar could not remove the display.

It is working

The add-on is working. It just does not have the information in the status bar, to have the statistics please right click and choose Word Count Tool.

Was a "perfect" plugin, some functionality lost in August 2015 Update, but still worth using. Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This used to be one of the best add-ons I ever found for Firefox. But sometime in August, the Status Bar display for the word and character count suddenly quit working. I don't know if the problem is due to an update to Firefox, or an update to WCT, but I can no longer get the Word and Character Counters to show up in the either the Menu Bar or the Status Bar. In Firefox's "Customize" menu, I can't even find an icon for Word Count Tools anymore, yet a check of "Tools - Add-ons" shows that it is installed and enabled. Whatever, I can't make the Status Bar display work anymore. Hopefully the author will be able to fix this problem on a future release. I assume this is some kind of compatibility issue with Firefox. I like Firefox, except for it's annoying tendency to come out with updates that "break" some of my favorite add-ons. If this problem gets solved, I'll update this review back to 5 stars, because I really liked WCT, back when it was fully functional.

The good news is, the pop-up dialog box display is still working. To use this, highlight a section of text on the web page, right-click, and look down toward the bottom of the Context Menu for "Word Count Tools Shift+Alt+C". Clicking on this this menu item with either the left or right mouse button brings up a dialog box that displays the statistics of the selected text. You then have to click "Dismiss" or hit the "ESC" key to kill the dialog box when you are done with it. Unfortunately, this dialog box appears to be hard-coded to pop up in the center of the screen; there does not appear to be any way to move it to some other part of the screen or to a second monitor if you have a dual-monitor system (as I do).

I have found that Word Count Tools does not work with one of my other Firefox Add-ons, the Simple Text Editor by "kud" [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/simple-text-editor/]. This is a Firefox Browser add-on, which provides simple plaintext editing. But for some reason, the process of selecting a block of text in this Editor window, then pulling op the Word Count Tolls dialog box, is not fully functional. The dialog box pops up, but the statistics are not displayed. The Character count is "1", all other statistics are "0", no matter how many characters are selected.

Because of the disabling of the Status Bar/Menu Bar display, and the apparent compatibility problem with kud's Simple Text Editor add-on, I am giving WCT 4 stars instead of 5. If these two issues can be corrected, I will upgrade this review to 5 stars.

Invoke by right click

Please select a text and right click to invoke the word count statistics. It will work just fine.

Useless Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This add-on is now useless since it doesn't display in the Add-on Bar anymore.

I have a tab counter add-on installed in FF 40, and it displays and updates in the Add-on Bar just fine.

So, why can't WCT display in the Add-on Bar like it use to? Please look into it again and fix it.

Without the informations in the status bar, this plugin is useless! Please update and start to display in the status bar like other plugin do!

Too much color Rated 2 out of 5 stars

I don't like that a new window on the page pops up. What's worse is that it's so colorfull that I fear for eyecancer.

WCT in status bar Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Answering a previous comment, you wrote "From Firefox 40, they do not allow to use the status bar to display information any more." Who's "they"?! And: quite a lot of other add-ons still work in the status bar, displaying information, too. Don't you think you could look into that again? For me, like for other user before, this was a very important feature. Now having to use the right-click context menu is a lot less simple.
Other than that, this is a great add-on! Please, try to look into it again. Thank you!

No longer showing up in toolbar Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I'm an online instructor and loved this word count tool. However, as of today (Aug 14), it's no longer showing up in the toolbar. That's the reason for the three stars rather than five.

Very handy. Doesn't seem to work anymore on FF 40.0.

Please use the version 3.0.2

We have released the version 3.0.2 to fix the problem.

very handy, thanks Rated 4 out of 5 stars

but has room for improvement, suggest adding options to change how much of the readout shows, as there can be alotof toolbar elements vying for space (buttons, textboxes etc). Heres a quick css workaround to shorten the readout. for reference the standard widths 300px

@-moz-document url("chrome://browser/content/browser.xul") {
/* TOOLBAR READOUT TWEAKS FOR https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/word-count-tool/
REVERSE THE COMMENTS IF YOU PREFER IT REMINDING THE READOUTS A WORD COUNT, OPPOSED TO LETTER COUNT */

/* THIS SHORTENS TOOLBAR READOUT TO "Last Selected xxxxxx words." */ /*
toolbaritem[label="Word Count Tools"] { min-width: 160px !important; width: 160px } */

/* THIS SHORTENS TOOLBAR READOUT TO "Last Selected xxxxxx" */
toolbaritem[label="Word Count Tools"] { min-width: 125px !important; width: 125px }
}

Not correct Statistics with the Greek Language. But it's a very good Addon! Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Very Good Addon!! I could say "Excellent and unique" instead, but the only reason I said only "very good is because the addon doesn't support other Languages and the statistics are wrong on he amount of Words selected. (I use Greek Language)... The statistics are Only correct, if you go to their webpage and check the (Non-English text) box, then it's correct. You should include this box on the addon as well. Thank you.

Very nice, the settings are a bit hidden Rated 4 out of 5 stars

The extension works well, it would benefit from a way to access its settings from the extension manager and not only from the right-click context menu of selected text (not very intuitive).

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (2.0.rev281.1-signed).

When you select a text, right mouse click to invoke the context menu. Navigate through the Word Count Tool menu you will see the option Working with non-English text. The default is working with English text.

I like this tool because it can work with the text that contains accentuated words.

Lightweight & works perfectly Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I've wished for an extension like this for a long time -- it's going to be invaluable on forums that only allow for a really short signature, as I change my sigs on a regular basis. Happily, it isn't increasing Firefox 21's CPU or RAM usage, even though my computer's fairly old (2GHz Centrino running Mepis Linux).

The only things that I think might improve it would be things like:
-- at least some control over where the statistics appear
-- have the info collapse after an adjustable period of time has passed with nothing highlighted, possibly then available in a tooltip if we hover over the icon
-- choose between having the info automatically visible or appear only as a tooltip for the icon (I'd go with icon)

In any event, I hope this extension remains active for a long time!
