This used to be among my top 5 Firefox Essential Add-Ons but sadly, the developer has chosen to abandon it. For me, the two most useful functions it served were the Link Copier and the URL Shortener which could be configured to use your personal API key for those services which support it. Luckily, I managed to find other individual add-ons to perform the same functions so all is not lost. Still, I would like to see this add-on continue to be developed but it looks like that is just a fond wish.
It has been more than a year since the last update. I urge the developer to release the source and perhaps someone in the Mozilla community can continue where he left off. It is too good an add-on to leave for the dead.
It is time to ding this some stars. Not only is the shortener not working correctly but the regular address copier does not correctly copy links shortened by the browser( those with the "h t t p://w w w" junk stripped out.)
I used to like this add-on- but since 2 of it's top functions are not working correctly I can't give the same recommendation that I once did. Of course when a fix is made I will go back and give a positive review and delete this one. However, by looking at the other complaints it has been too long...
TinyURL doesn't work...
Loved it until the shrinker stopped working. Now I've gotta find something else to take its place until you get it working again (in v11). Thanks for such a great add-on!
PLEASE update for Firefox 11. The URL shortener stopped working.
"Extends the LOCATION BAR with set of commands to (Shorten URL's, Search site)"
I use these two features. Search site is useful for www.tamroshop.fi, amazon, ebay... Those have lousy search.
I removed some unnecessary buttons in UrlBarExt / Options / Stylish:
/* Hide the RSS icon */
/* Always hide the star icon */
If that will stop working, I can still use:
Working version for FF10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/39028169/URLbar-FF10.xpi
Miss this plugin. Why the author don't upgrade for Firefox 7 compatibility? Have anyone downloaded the version linked by Foggy Bummer? Does it really work?
update for firefox 7 please. Thanks
Great add-on, but I had some problems with it that knocked two stars off the rating:First, after one of its updates (forgot which one), it stopped remembering the tags I add in the Tags tab within its options window, so after I close Firefox, it reverts back to the default ones (search, readme, check, code, etc.)The second issue is that every time I start Firefox, the message asking me if I would like it to automatically copy the shortened url's into clipboard appears.
The extension works great. BUT - every time the browser is started a menu bar is added asking "would you like to automatically copy the shortened url's into clipboard?". There is no option to set this feature on/off. Why not? Who want to answer the same question over and over again? Since the added bar is not tiny, it hogs precious screen space.
@ Foggy Bummer--following your instructions, but when I try to install I get a message that says it can't modify the needed file :(
Please Update for FF6
Firefox tells me it's not available for 5.0.1. An update would be much appreciated. I really like this addon, although I only use two functions: copy URL and shorten URL.
The new version of this addon very often asks "If I want to add shortened URL blah-blah-blah" in its top bar. I did not ask for this, this is very annoying, I see no way to disable it, therefore I am forced to remove the addon.
P.S. This is the classical situation: if a program has all needed features, but developers want to develop that program further, they worsen the program.
In New Version 1.8, Until 'extensions.urlbarext.short.url.auto.copy.to.clipboard' Is Set To True, FF Starts With The Same Question Every Time.
A Quick Fix Would Solve It.
I have used this forever & love it. But now, with my change to FF4, I only have like 4 options on there. Can't shorten my URL's which is the main thing I miss. Other than that it is a wonderful extension.
Great addon, I have mostly used it only for the tinyurl feature for several years now.
Given 4 stars because there's no way to disable the annoying 'balloon' notifications after creating a tinyurl, because they cover up the address bar in FF4. Wasn't a problem in previous versions of the addon and Firefox.
*clicks Tiny button* "Tiny URL now ready (Check the location bar)" Thank you, Captain Obvious.
oh and i have 2 more questions now that i noticed it:
1.is it possible for the notification balloons to be displayed somewhere else instead above the entirle firefox toolbar? it is a bit annoying and intrusive while you are working with your browser and you are clicking toolbar buttons very quickly.
ie i click Shorten Url and then immediately i want to click the Unmht button to save the page while Shorten is shortening the url.i dont want to have to wait for the notification message on the urlbar to disappear to click the Unmht button.
2.is it possible that when we enable the automatic copy of the shortened url that the shortened url does not also replace the normal url adress of the site in the bar? i say this because sometimes for instance you have a youtube url and you want to copy/paste its shortened url in live messenger so that it does not auto-load it in the window.but then you want to also post the tube video in a forum and you need the normal full url.so you are forced to reload the page so that you can get the normal url because the Shorten Url has already replace it in the urlbar with its shortened url.
these are some small nitpicks but on the whole this addons rulez.
I love it. I don't need any buttons now and i use the space of my big omnibar, I like the symbols more than buttons outside the adressbar. The tagging function is cool, twitter too. This extention replaces three or four others and look better and has more functions than the others which it replaces.
I can confirm that bit.ly no longer appears to function with UrlbarExt. I suspect it may have something to do with bit.ly having moved their api from http://bit.ly/api (I don't know where they've moved it).
Is there any chance of an update to restore bit.ly functionality and perhaps add it's sister site j.mp? It would also be good to have the option to able to use my own username and APIKey with them.
Since a couple of weeks the bar isn't able to use bit.ly anymore (this happened before I've switched to FF 4 and afterwards). I always get the message "Not able to create a tiny url [410: Gone]" though the bit.ly-website is working normal andd other URL shortener (e.g. Cutefox) work without problems with bit.ly. Can I fix this?
Proxy doesnt work, everything else is fine.
I'm using FF4 now, and the TinyURL feature doesn't seem to work. When I click on it, nothing happens. Anyone else has this problem in FF4?
I don't get the twitter part, they only want to post the shorten url link. Did I miss something ? How can I organize somethink like :
Title - ShortenURL
PS: Firefox 4b12 doesn't keep params like custom shorten url.
