Why was trails created?

In early 2007 we created a Firefox extension that enables the Internet user to edit and print his/her own "web book". The project - at the time called "reedit", or simply the "editing project", was initiated by Lukas as part of his BA graduation at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (NL). Friends of friends, Lukas introduced the idea to Anthon Astrom, who brought Mikael Prag aboard as muscles. Together we brought the project to higher grounds, and since mid-2009 it lives in the Mozilla Addon library, with a greatly refreshed interface.

The key point of the project was the transformation of combined website fragments (texts and images) into a linear-layout printable booklet. With the click of a button, the web fragments become editable, and the booklet can be extended with personal content; notes etc. The structure of the book layout is clean, but offers enough basic flexibility for individuality. When a booklet is composed, you can choose to print, export (PDF), or upload it to the trails Public Library, and share your research trails with the rest of the world.

What's next for trails

trails is under constant development, alongside other Café Society projects. It feels important to point out that trails really always was and will be more a conceptual approach than a full-fledged software tool. It won't cater to everyone, but hopefully make some people's day, and inspire to new ideas. It's the discussion that interests us the most, and keeping it alive is what makes us eager to get out of bed every morning.

However, some key things that we'd like to see for trails in the near future are:

  • proper page flow
  • increased formatting possibilities
  • new export formats
  • ...

Who is Astrom / Zimmer?

Astrom / Zimmer work in the Woods, Zürich, on the topic of contemporary text; the effects, problems and possibilities of the transition from print to screen, and vice versa. A collaboration born in the halls of the Rietveld Academie (NL) and nourished by long discussions and working sessions in Amsterdam cafés.

Since 2007, we have continued to develop new ideas: some more experimental, and others growing into full-blown design research projects; some entirely independent, and others in collaboration with academic research institutes or independent foundations and archives.

Working as an independent research group, we aim to spark and elaborate on discussions, revolving around functional software and hardware interfaces. Fusing theoretical research with practical implementations, we try to make abstract topics less abstract, through lectures, presentations and workshops.
