Why should the author of such a great extension ignores to update?
I had to reinstall FF because of a studpid yahoo toolbar and loos this add on.
solution:
first get checkcompatibility extension to disable checking and then install this.

Make This Compatible
Tell Firefox to stop checking the compatibility of all your add-ons. After you do this all your incompatible extensions Should automatically work. Note: On some you MAY notice they are not working exactly the same. Most will though.
***************************************************************************************
Follow this Simple procedure:

Type "about:config" in the address bar: (without the " ")
> Right-click on any empty area to see the context menu (right click)
> Select "New"
> Select "Boolean"
> Type or copy/paste "extensions.checkCompatibility.9.0.1" (without the " ") Note: Make sure there is a dot Before the first number

> Set the value to "false"

After doing the above, you can add this extension to Firefox without seeing the "....could not be installed...." message

FYI: Any Custom changes you or your extensions make will be in bold in about:config

I returned to using Tidy Read Rated 5 out of 5 stars

In 2012 I wrote:

Next to Flash Block, this is my favorite add-on I do not like Firefox 9.0 because Tidy Read does not work in it yet.

November 2013:
Here is an update. Since Tidy Read was not updating along with Firefox, I eventually left it to use the Reader add-on-- which was quite elegant, but again, became increasingly unstable with new Firefox updates.

Out of frustration, I returned to read the comments here, along with older suggestions to keep Tidy Read, which I am following at my own supposed hazard.

With the help of the checkCompatibility extension-- I have been able to reinstate Tidy Read, and am using it on Firefox 25.0.

Thus far, I haven't been bothered by any problems. It seems that Tidy Read does exactly what it was intended to do. I cannot understand at all why it is not routinely offered with later firefoxes.

Again I would like to say thanks for Tidy Read!

Was a great add-on but doesn't support FF 9 (nor 8). Moved on to Readability. Not as good as Tidy, but will do the job. Plus it has a chrome extension that works good, as oppose to TidyRead.

Correction: Just realized if you set the setting for Overlay Original you can click anywhere outside of TidyRead to return to original. Sorry for the error.

Still works fine, actually.
Just install the add-on compatibility reporter to enable an "install anyway" option from this page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/

Good tool for you who want bigger size on the text. But it's sometimes ennoying when the size changes.

I found a bug of printing Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This addons is very very useful, but I found a bug of printing, I'd like to print my favorite article into PDF files, but the long article can't be printed in one page and some contents were lost. Can you fix it? thank you very much!

Error shown in error console... Rated 2 out of 5 stars

When used with Noscript, there are some error logs found in error console when loading the web pages each time, this may lower the stability of firefox.

the best one compared with others Rated 5 out of 5 stars

After used the "Reader" mode in Safari 5, I'm eagar to find alternatives on firefox and other browsers
Compared between Readability, Reader, Readable, iReader and TidyRead, this one is my favourite. I really like it so i specially come here to give my vote and comment
The build-in styles and colors are beautiful. The auto recognize function is sweet that it omits the trouble to click the button

the best reading tool

Good concept, needs work. Why not make all options available from the toolbar? Why do I have to go to tools->tidyread->settings to add or exclude a page?

Add an option to never display images in TidyRead.

It would be nice to be able to click on an icon in the toolbar to always or never display a base url with TidyRead. Also, the search algorithms on the base urls need work. You can't add just 'newegg.com', you must add 'http://www.newegg.com/'.

In settings, add a 'Shopping' to the list of sites to never display with TidyRead.

Because of these deficiencies, I find it more of an annoyance to use than a benefit, but the extension has a great deal of potential. With a little work, this truly could be a five-star extension.

@ midair: Update your browser if you don't like addons that don't support outdated crap. When you neglect to update to what everybody else is using, you're going to have compatibility issues. Either deal with it or move on.

Game changer for people with weakening eyes or an affinity for big text that makes for faster reading.

A few small issues with the configuration UI, but then, that's only needed and used by a very few people.

Yet another add-on which purports to work in pre-Firefox 3 releases, but doesn't here in 2.0.0.20. Although the options button is clickable, the options menu fails to appear. Checking in about:config, I can see smart mode is supposed to be active; but again, nothing happening here on various news sites.

Developers, please check your add-ons in *all* versions that you include as compatible.
