“Terms of Service; Didn't Read” (short: ToS;DR) is a young project started in June 2012 to help fix the “biggest lie on the web”: almost no one really reads the terms of service we agree to all the time.

Background. The rough idea behind ToS;DR emerged during the 2011 Chaos Communication Camp near Berlin, with people from Unhosted a movement to create web apps that give users control over their valuable user data and privacy. Since June 2012, Hugo Roy (@hugoroyd) has taken the lead for the project, and started the legal analysis. Ultimately, all the work is transparent and the discussions happen in public. Our work is funded by non-profits organisations and individual donations and gets released as free software and open data.

Please bear in mind that the project is still in the early phase and that most data is subject to important changes. More information about our classification.

What does “ToS;DR” mean? the name is inspired by internet acronym TL;DR which stands for "Too Long; Didn't Read" and is often used on blogs and emails when a block of text is just really long and that people are too lazy to read the whole stuff. It was intended more as a code name than as a real name. But it seems that people like it (do you?)

Easy to use, and it displays the terms of service comprehensively.

Not all it could or should be Rated 1 out of 5 stars

The idea of this add-on is excellent, sadly the implementation still leaves quite a lot to be desired.

It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't (using the latest Firefox). Sometimes a rating shows up on a site and sometimes it doesn’t (on the same site).

In addition to this, no new services seem to have been added to its list for a long time - even when services have the simplest of terms (analyzed and sent in by users) they do not seem to get added (this is based on their suggestion list as seen over a period of months).

Also, for quite a while, ironically enough, TOSDR’s own privacy link was dead, which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. The privacy policy, as it stands now (the link "Privacy Policy" beside the “ Add to Firefox”–button), doesn’t make any mention of the add-on itself and leaves one in doubt as to whether it is just referring to the tosrd.org pages or not, and in the description of the add-on there is no mention of when and where and how it might or might not contact TOSDR (or other) servers.

An add-on that claims to be made by and for people concerned with privacy has to do better than this.

i added it and like it so far but i had to dig pretty deep to find any kind of privacy policy of their own. it is one line long.

The only addon in it's kind; and it's crucial. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Looks great and is very clear and very informative.

tosdr's Privacy Policy / Not for iceweasel? Rated 3 out of 5 stars

It will often show a decent breakdown of the website's ToS and privacy policy, but then suddenly replace it with the "Not Rated Yet" message. Perhaps it is getting an update while I am reading it? I am using Iceweasel to which it might not be compatible?

I am curious about the privacy policy for this add-on too. It says it does not send any information about the sites you are on unti lyou click the app's button, but I often notice it has loaded a ToS rating on sites i have yet to click it for. How would it get the rating if I haven't clicked it without sending a request to their database about it?

Terrible implementation gals / guys. No instructs how to use it, not even in the Add IN area? No new icons, no new right click anything, anywhere? How about some instructions?

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.1).

We're really sorry for any inconvenience with the addon, we've been working hard recently to fix all reported problems in 0.3.1.

The current version on addons market is not working properly with Firefox 25+, We've already fixed that in 0.4 release, you can check it out on our github repo
https://github.com/tosdr/tosdr-firefox/releases/tag/v0.4-alpha

About instructions, the addon icon should appear in url bar whenever you open any page, we'll make that more clear with next update which already submitted for review.

We do apologize for any inconvenience, and we welcome your suggestions and thoughts on our github repo or you can email us on team@tosdr.org.

What happened to this? Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I used to use this, because the idea is great, but any new TOS never seemed to be added (even if I sent the developers the needed information to have them added), so I uninstalled the extension. Is it even being developed any more?

Good- but incomplete Rated 4 out of 5 stars

The idea is great and it could potentially make a real difference.

The issue I have seen is it has far too small of a catalog. Is it actively being developed? How can the catalog grow???

A really good idea succesfully implemented.

missing TOS, does not go away on ctrl-tab, otherwise very good :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars

If you click it and then switch tabs with ctrl-tab, it still shows. It should go away on any tab switches.

Also, it doesn't say how it gets TOS;DR info. Does it fetch it every time I visit site.com, or does it only update TOS info when the extension itself is updated? Basically, this extension needs a TOS.

We've updated the addon so that it goes away when a new tab is opened => https://github.com/tosdr/tosdr-firefox/commit/25b95ff172c46ffbf08b6d36654aec82c7318cf9

On the better side of a Halfway Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Base concept of summarizing those agreements is a good idea, especially if you do actually read those things: Alerts you to stipulations you might want to examine more closely, for example.
However, I found it odd that they have rated neither themselves nor 5apps (Appcache Ltd). Perhaps a "whom watches the watchers" sapience?
