There is no option to turn off that feature - yes, but there is an easy work around - SHIFT or ALT key. Just highlight the "switch to tab" in the suggestion list and press SHIFT + ENTER to open in current tab or ALT + ENTER to open it in new tab.
There are more workarounds. Holding down Alt or Shift actually changes the information displayed to show that switch to tab is overridden. Middle clicking (or Shift-middle-click, but not Alt-middle-click which will open the save page dialog) doesn't change the display but will open a new page or tab, subject to preferences. Ctrl-click will also open a new tab, again also subject to preferences. You can also manually edit the URL to remove the "Switch to tab" at the beginning and it will open the page in the current tab.
All of which begs the question, if it does all that then why not just a tiny little tweak to disable it completely :)
'Switch to Tab' works just great. Now I can open same web page many times with out the hassle of Switch to Tab. Thanks guys for the amazing work.
Great! The switch to tab "feature" doesn't work for me at ALL anyway.
Thank you so much for this!! Works perfectly :DD
Works as expected. Thanks iann for making this. Why this feature needed to exist in the first place is beyond me. I mean seriously, are there thousands of people out there who are constantly opening new tabs and than going "OH NO!!! I already have that open somewhere else! Oh horror! Oh cruel fate! If only there were a way prevent this irreversible tragedy from happening again!" WTF Mozilla?
Thanks for making the plugin for the rest of us, that hate this "feature". Why is it that people need to force unnecessary and annoying "feature" on the rest of us? Two "features" are annoying me to no ends are:
1. win7/vista explorer auto refresh
2. firefox switch to tab (well at least now I can get around it with this great plugin).
The "switch to tab" feature doesn't play nice along with "Enter Select" extension so I want to disable. Unfortunately there's no easy way to do, except this add-on.
Works as expected.
I find the new Firefox 4 feature "switch to tab" totally unnecessary and quite annoying. There should be an easier way to turn this 'feature' off than by an add-on. In the meantime, thank you to iann for this Switch to Tab no more, which does just that. Wonderful!
I HATE the new firefox 4.0 feature that means you cannot open the same tab in more than one window. Googling led to a lot of talk about tweaks and stuff I really could not be bothered to do, and then I came across this add-on which for me is perfect! Allows me to open the same page as many times as i need to! Awesome. FYI mozilla, people OFTEN need to open the same page in more than one tab. (They also need the 'Save and quit' feature AS DEFAULT but thats another story...)
For me this is an absolutely essential extension. Great work!
Just one little thing I noticed: When a page is open in a tab, but is not known in the browser history (this happens in private browsing) then the URL for that page can still appear as a suggestion when typing in another tab. In FF3 that did not happen and I think that it shouldn't happen here: showing it in the list under the navigation bar gives the impression that this page is part of the browsing history, even though it is not. Hence I think that it should not be shown at all.
The Switch to Tab Blacklist addon might handle the private browsing issue for you. You have to configure the blacklist to "*" wildcard to block everything,. Worth trying.
Since this so called "feature" came out it just annoyed the hell of me and have been searching for a solution since and came to this gem that solved my problem in a second, thanks for this add-on.
I frequently used cntrl-D to duplicate tab contents in IE. When I get knee-deep into a website and find part of the answer, I duplicate the tab. This allows me to keep a tab open to an area that I want to study while continuing my search deeper into the website in a new tab. While this add-on at least allows me to have Wikipedia, for example, open in more than one tab, I still have to cut and paste URL's switching back and fourth between tabs ... very inconvenient. I spend a great deal of time almost every day doing research and using cntrl-D. I was forced from IE9 by the lost of the search box. I cannot edit and re-use search terms since the terms are replaced by the visited URL ... a similar problem. Please add this ability to the contextual popup menu for tabs. And thanks for providing this add-on even without the duplicate function.
A little harsh to mark down an addon for doing exactly what it claims to do, don't you think?
Firefox supports tab duplication in several ways. Try middle-clicking the reload button, or ctrl-dragging a tab. Tab Mix Plus also supports it in further ways, and so do several other addons if you don't want anything that complex. I don't think there is a native keypress to duplicate a tab, but you can add a toolbar button or use one of the keyconfig addons to do it.
Thank you! I agree with mojo-chan. Why was this added? To make Firefox feel even more like Chrome? It's only an annoyance. It should be disabled by default or removed completely and reimplemented as an extension. At least give an option to disable it!
I use Firefox over Chrome for a reason. Making it a clone will only drive users away, not bring them back.
Why do FF devs love to break the UI and force us to use add-ons to fix it? This works well enough until a proper fix is in place.
Curse you Moz!
