When I first created an account, it never asked me for a password. Half the time, the tab page didn't load until I cleared cookies. When I tried to reset the password, I got to the reset page, but the button was greyed out so I couldn't reset my password. Removing this addon.
Sounds like a great app and I'd love to use it, but it does not seem to work on 34.0. I signed up, verified my email address, and now when I go to startHQ.com I get a blank page. Also, I have no idea how to set the start HQ page as my homepage on Firefox Android, and there don't seem to be any instructions on site to do that.
Was it so difficult to make mobile page THE SAME as desktop one? if developers are that great so they override any "use desktop site" flags, why did they disable ALL settings in mobile version? There's no way to manage tabs on android. This addon is useless.
StartHQ is exactly what I was looking for... but one thing bothered me. I really expected that I could configure a few things more, like custom background and the search engine. I personally would prefer to have an option to simply disable that search bar. But since that's not an option I would like to be able to define it to make a google search or even change it's position and size on the tab...
There are a couple of things which are okay about StartHQ. First, compared to "Awesome New Tab" in Chrome, StartHQ opens in a new tab like lightning.
Secondly, there are probably many more great apps than the 16 or so I've installed.
I say probably because the apps are only sorted by one tag. There are far too many to have just this one filter.
For me, it's productivity I want.
So, select the 'Productivity' tag (if there is one listed on the front page - apps are listed by popularity depending upon the amount of social endorsements) and then a list of 172 apps, about 10 to a page, is presented to you.
No other way of filtering, you just have to scroll through each page. I got bored after about page 6 (so many feed readers!), so who knows what else I'm missing out on?
Also, many of the apps have far too little description.
One was '42goals' or something like that. It had a brief one-liner description, like your 'snippet', then in the space for full description a note stating 'sorry, no blog description written for this app'.
Well, here's an idea, guys: why not write one?
Good concept, but needs a serious amount of work before I'm prepared to put any more work into it.
We are aware of the issues you mentioned and are working to address them ASAP:
App descriptions will be editable by app providers themselves, so they will be made longer. At the moment we are extracting them automatically from the meta tags which are limited to 100 characters due to that being the maximum that Google displays in search results.
We are also thinking of feature tags, so you could search for an app based on what features it has.
Most importantly, we will improve the discovery process, as outlined here: http://starthq.uservoice.com/forums/198432-roadmap/suggestions/3762268-browse-the-apps-through-categories-like-top-rated- - feel free to vote or suggest your own ideas there.
Smaller tweaks like switching tabs to say news if no blogs posts are available will be rolled out within a few days.
Here are my thoughts about trying StartHQ after a week.
Pros: - Very clean! Just big simple icons with good design. - Easy to use. It was very easy to add in my links and I switched up the images to use Google Play's icons for a lot of them. - The homepage URL is very easy to use and I can set it up on other computers without any problems. All of my settings are stored on the StartHQ account.
Cons: - Links and grid are not resizeable. The icons are fixed size. - The StartHQ button being forced onto my Navigation Bar is really annoying. I already have a Home button. (See Edit) - The StartHQ search isn't a real search, it only searches in StartHQ's database. Perhaps give us the option to configure it to Google or something else.
Overall, my only complaints are that very useful customization features are not yet available. I will continue to use StartHQ in the mean time in hopes that they add in new features down the road. Right now, the simplicity is perfect.
EDIT 8/27/13 - StartHQ just contacted me to let me know that they will address the StartHQ button in the Nav bar and are working on adding customizability to the search bar. I'm really liking the way it works and look forward to the changes.
