I really wanted this extenstion to work.
I installed smart print to save paper- after getting sick of printing web pages that wouldn't fit on one page...by like, 2 lines.
I'm still not really sure what smart print changes when I print using it. I think basically Smartprint must strip header and footer bars, and realign the margin of web pages before it prints.
I'd have liked something that shrunk the page to fit the paper. Or wrapped text into a second column. Unfortunately, those are still 'wishes', not options available with Smartprint.
I uninstalled Smartprint because the most basic way of saving paper- just printing the selection -was unavailable when I used Smartprint. I'd select the text and pictures, press 'print', and wait for the print dialogue to come up. It isn't instant with Smartprint, because it takes time to calculate something. And then when the print dialogue does come up, the interruption has cleared any selection. So printing your selection is no longer possible.
(it does work with FF 3.x - just disable the compatibility check)
Great! does what it says! also shows you how much pages you saved. Very useful and easy to use
Yes, this plugin really sounds amazing and is something I've been looking for. If possible, please provide an update for Firefox 3.
It's really good. Please update for Firefox 3.0
I downloaded SmartPrint when I found it in April because it sounded like such a great idea; I often find when I print up web pages that I'll end up with a page that's got only a couple of lines or some footer crap on it ... and, of _course_, that page _always_ requires a new sheet of paper. I was excited to see that someone had found a solution for that situation, because, frankly, it's really pretty annoying. Since I don't print from Firefox very often, I didn't have an opportunity to try out the extension until this week, and it's been nothing but an Excedrin headache waiting to happen.
The best way to explain what happens when I attempt to use this (in Fx 22.214.171.124, which the "See All Versions" page says SmartPrint's compatible with) is to illustrate it, so I took four screenshots of what I get (if you're using a wi-fi network that has the craptastic SonicWALL installed, my apologies — you won't be able to see them; it's a truly bizarre situation, because SonicWALL allowed me to go to TinyPic's home page and complete the process of uploading my shots, but then it wouldn't let me _look_ at them when I was done ... _whatever_).
1) This is the odd little options sheet that slides out of the title bar. As you can see, the rest of the box, the part with the "following features," is ... well ... _missing_. The only thing to do with this, really, is to press the Esc key.
2) This is the result I got when I decided to print up my most recent diary from The Daily Plate. So far, so good: The Print dialogue box was exactly what I was expecting.
3) However, _this_ is what happened after I clicked on the Print Preview button. This happens EVERY SINGLE TIME, and clicking on either Cancel button does nothing ...
4) ... except this. And this doesn't go away at all. The only way to dismiss either of these dialogues is to Force Quit, rinse, and repeat.
Since it doesn't work at all, I gave SmartPrint one star. I felt that an extra star was in order because it's a great idea that will be helpful once it's properly up and running — but I just couldn't bring myself to give it two stars, if only because upon further consideration, I felt that that would be misleading to anyone interested in trying it out.
I tried this on a web page that had just a line spilled on the 2nd page. Installing this extension actually increased the print. I found that the size of blank spaces got just bigger! :-(
I used this add on for a couple weeks - # of pages saved was 0. It actually caused me to print EXTRA pages because it disables the print selection feature so when printing pages I wasn't able to just print my content, I also had to print all the junk surrounding it.
It says that isn't compatible with firefox 2.0.X.13!
But I don't see compatibility requirements anywhere.
Great idea. Wish it was compatible with newer versions of Firefox.
I think this is a great idea. I hate printing something out and getting only one line of text on one of the pages. I don't print from the browser that often, but I'm glad something like this exists for when I do.
