OVERVIEW
Search Site provides facilities to search within the current site using the search engine currently selected in the search bar.
USER REFERENCE
Initiating Searches
Searches within the current site can be initiated from the search bar, or from the context menu, or by drag-and-drop into the search bar.
Default Search Domain
There is an option to specify the default search domain as either Within subdomain or Within entire domain.
The Search Site icons in the search bar and on the context menu will change to indicate the default search domain.
Search Bar Icon
To initiate a search of the default domain from the search bar using the icon: type the search terms into the search bar and then click on the Search Site icon.
To initiate a search of a specific domain from the search bar using the icon: type the search terms into the search bar and then right-click on the Search Site icon and select either Within subdomain or Within entire domain.
Search Bar Shortcuts
To initiate a search of the default domain from the search bar using a keyboard shortcut: type the search terms into the search bar and then press Ctrl+Enter.
To initiate a search of the other (non-default) domain from the search bar using a keyboard shortcut: press Ctrl+Shift+Enter instead of Ctrl+Enter.
Context Menu
To initiate a search of the default domain from the context menu: first select some text within the web page, then right-click on the selected text and choose the Search Site for selection menu item.
To initiate a search of a specific domain from the context menu: first select some text within the web page, then right-click on the selected text and choose the Search Site for selection submenu, and then select either Within subdomain or Within entire domain. Note, the Show 'Search Site' submenu option must be enabled to make the Search Site submenu visible.
Normally, the search engine shown in the search bar will be used. However, if the search bar is not visible on one of the toolbars, the default search engine will be used instead.
There is an option for the selected text to be enclosed in quotes, so that it is searched as a single phrase.
Drag-and-Drop
To initiate a search of the default domain by drag-and-drop: select some text within the web page, then Ctrl+Drag the selected text and drop it into the search bar.
To initiate a search of the other (non-default) domain by drag-and-drop: use Ctrl+Shift+Drag instead of Ctrl+Drag.
Showing Results
The search results are normally shown in the current tab.
The normal behaviour can be modified in three ways:
- by holding down the Ctrl and/or Shift keys at the same time as clicking on the Search Site icon or the Search Site menu items:
• Shift - show results in new window
• Ctrl - show results in new foreground tab
• Ctrl+Shift - show results in background tab
- by using Middle-Click when clicking on the Search Site icon or the Search Site menu items:
• Middle-Click - show results in new foreground tab
- by holding down the Alt key at the same time pressing Ctrl+Enter or using Ctrl+Drag:
• Alt+Ctrl+Enter or Alt+Ctrl+Drag - show results in new foreground tab
Options
The Options Dialog can be accessed by selecting Tools | Add-ons on the Firefox main menu.
The Options Dialog allows the user to:
• Hide the Search Site icon in the search bar.
• Show the Search Site submenu on the context menu.
• Enclose the selected text in quotes when searching from context menu.
• Choose the default search domain as either Within subdomain or Within entire domain.
