Use the SafeBrowser extension to browse the web safely. With this extension you can simply surf the web as you normally do, but when you get to a site you're not sure you can trust...
1) Right click on the link to that site and open it using the "Open link in SafeBrowser" option in the drop down menu.
2) Click on the "Open page in SafeBrowser" menu option or browser button to view the page you are currently viewing in SafeBrowser, and continue surfing from there.
3) At any time you can click the "View Outside SafeBrowser" button to view the page you are currently looking at in a normal browser window. Note though that this button is disabled for sites categorized as SUSPICIOUS or HIGH RISK.
What is SafeBrowser?
SafeBrowser is a web advisory service that gives you web reputation information (how safe or not a site is to view) about websites.
The difference between SafeBrowser and other services is that SafeBrowser allows you to go ahead and view sites anyway regardless of their rating!
Now you don't have to have your mouse hovering over that link you want to click on but aren't sure of because it doesn't have a great reputation for safety!
Most sites viewed inside SafeBrowser have everything that could potentially cause harm stripped out of the page, except images for which you should rely on your antivirus application to block if necessary.* This does mean that some sites won't display or work properly, but the purpose of SafeBrowser is not so much about viewing sites perfectly, it's about allowing you to view sites that might be riskier to view outside SafeBrowser. SafeBrowser will be enhanced over time to be more compatible with more websites.
By default, on most sites SafeBrowser blocks all pop-ups, java applets, flash animations, cookies, silverlight and activex controls, and optionally adverts too. Any of these features can be re-enabled for sites you really trust!
There's even an Extreme Clean option which shows you text and links only, zero script and no images! Use that on the most dangerous of sites.
SafeBrowser is in very active development with updates and enhancements coming almost every day. It's still in beta and has some limitations (see below), but we thought it's good enough that people could get some benefit from it now, and we're working hard to remove those limitations too.
