This should be a standard part of Firefox, or at least turn-onable via preferences...

Brilliant, a "must have" for users experimenting with say the Google Maps API. Sometimes FF2 eats up all memory, and is busy with garbage collection for minutes: a quick restart helps.

This should be a standard Firefox functionality.

Could we have customizable keyboard shortcuts please?

Version 1.1.3 is faster. Previous versions of the extension would spell it all out with a "Restart Firefox" entry on my File menu. The current version now displays only "(R)" in that menu slot. Much less to read == much faster restart.

Get download error -228 when trying to install. Get a 5 from me because I need this functionality and loved it in FF2.

Pretty Good Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This extension does what it does well. However, I hope the author will eventually add an option to get rid of the icon that appears in the file menu (it looks out of place), and perhaps an option to place a restart button on the toolbar.

so far so good, works as expected! my only suggestion would be to have an option for a confirmation dialog before restarting, and the ability to change the shortcut key

Room for improvement Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Unfortunately, this extension is the only add-on that has given me problems since I started using FF.

This add-on deleted all my bookmarks on the top bar and also disabled the navigation tools (back, forward, refresh and stop were all disable) when I used it first time. As a result I had to reinstall FF.

I have been looking for a "restart" function in FF because like many FF users, I regularly install add-ons and they usually require FF to be restarted. I have even considered creating a "restart" extension myself (if it wasn't available).

Even though I'm disappointed with the extension, I will give credit to the people who actually put an effort in to developing. I would also like to make some suggestions and contributions to improve this extension because I really believe that this simple "restart" extension will prove to be useful to many FF users.

Here are my suggestions:

Make a button for the function rather than a menu option because this will reduce the time it takes for FF to restart and when the user decides they want to restart FF. So in other words, the Restart function should work as soon as the user wants to restart FF.

Also give the user options. This means that users should have the option to restart FF with current browsing session or restart FF with new browsing session. There should also be an option to choose which option should be set as the default.

I hope to see this extension developed more and also introduced as one of core extensions in FF in the future.

Feel free to contact me if you would like information about I wrote.

Rated 2 stars because I think its a good extension, just needs improvements.

RE: Room for improvement

Hi A Hassan,

Regarding your comments, please let me answer some of them:

Well, I sincerely don't what caused this... I have serious doubts about being QuickRestart since this extension has nothing to do with bookmarks and/or navigation tools. QuickRestart has been downloaded +200000 times and you're the first to report such a behavior.

>> Make a button for the function rather than a menu

>> FF to restart...

There's a button (added in 1.1.0 - February 9, 2007): Right click on the main toolbar (near the main FF menu), and select "Customize...". This open a "Customize Toolbar" Window in which you will find several available icons, including one for QuickRestart. Drag and drop the icon from the "Customize Toolbar" Window to your main toolbar, and then click on "Done". There you go!

>> Also give the user options. This means that users should
>> have the option to restart FF with current browsing session

FF includes these options: From the main menu select Tools -> Options... to open the "Options" window. From the "Options" window select the "Main" tab. There you will see several "Startup" options; from the drop down labeled with "When firefox starts:" select your desired option; to finish click on "Ok".

I hope this information helps you and I'm sorry about any inconvenience.

Regards,

Juan

Gotta Have Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Whenever I configure a new Mozilla installation, this is one of the first extensions I install. Even though 3.0 offers you a restart button when you install or remove an addin that requires it, there are lots of other times I want to restart, and this baby is always waiting to do a quick restart.
