Phone Number Lookup 2.0.1-signed.1-signed Requires Restart
Automatically highlights North American telephone numbers on websites, showing the location (city and state) when you hover over the phone number, based on the area code and exchange.
About this Add-on
This addon highlights phone numbers on websites, and lets you easily find out where the phone number is located. Whenever you go to a website, it will automatically detect phone numbers on the site (in almost all commonly used formats), and highlight them (by default, it will underline them with a red dotted line -- but you can change that).
To find out where the phone number is located, you just hover the mouse over the phone number, and in 1/4 second (by default) it will start a lookup of the location of the phone number. As soon as the data is retrieved (typically less than 1/2 second), it will be displayed in an info box by the phone number. The box will automatically disappear when you move the mouse outside of the phone number or info box. You can get full details on the phone number by clicking on the location in the info box.
The addon uses (with permission) the database at wherecall.com.
There are currently two options that you can set. One is the number of milliseconds to wait before displaying the info box (by default, 250ms, or 1/4 second). If you find that the box is popping up too often when you do not want it to, you can increase this number. Or, if you want to get the phone number locations as quickly as possible, you can lower it. The other option is the highlighting style of the phone numbers. If you are familiar with CSS styles, you should be able to edit it to your liking (but be careful -- changing this could cause unwanted problems).
The addon will not detect all phone numbers. For example, it will not detect phone numbers in images, word-based phone numbers ('1-800-FLOWERS'), oddball formats ('1- 508- 555 - 1212'), and phone numbers split with an HTML tag ('508-<b>555-1212</b>' or '508-555-<wbr>1212'). I may add support for some of those in the future.
The addon currently only supports phone numbers from North America (ones with the country code '1'). If there appears to be enough demand for it, I will add support for phone numbers from other countries.
If you encounter any problems, please let me know, and I will do my best to take care of them.
The one change to v2.0 is that there are now options for "Trigger" and "Action", where the addon will wait for the trigger and then perform the action. Phone numbers on web pages are automatically highlighted as before. However, previously you had to hover over a link (the trigger) to perform a lookup of the number (the action).
Now, the Action option lets you decide whether to look up the phone number as before (the default setting), or one of two new options. The new options are that you can have the addon copy the phone number to the clipboard, or automatically dial the number using the "callto:" protocol (e.g. with Skype).
There is also a Trigger option. Instead of hovering over a link (the default), you now have the option of instead clicking on the phone number. This works well in conjunction with the clipboard and callto actions, to prevent accidentally altering the clipboard or accidentally calling someone.
You can just go to the addon options to make these changes.
There are no known bugs; if you find any, please let me know. Thank you!
