Simple, flexible way to view PDF files Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I was continually frustrated by Adobe Reader crashing while I was viewing PDF files in my web browser.

PDF Download is a simple program that gives you greater flexibility over where to view PDF files. It allowed me to bring my PDFs out of the web browser and into Reader in a simple, flexible way.

Once you use this, you'll wonder why it's not a basic feature of Mozilla.

Can't live without it Rated 5 out of 5 stars

All too often I'd accidentally click a link to a PDF and have Firefox lock up on me while it downloaded and Adobe's bloated reader program loaded. No more with this extension, the view as HTML option works great most of the time and rarely do I even have to bother with the reader unless I'm viewing something offline.

Probably my greatest frustration with Firefox is the way it chokes on PDF files. Like it or not, PDFs are universal, and FF needs to give high priority to fixing the browser to work with them on its own without the need for a 3rd-party add-on. This PDF Download add-on does not work reliably for me and never has. Many of the work-arounds suggested here do not work either in the case of active pages (aspx, php, etc.) that call the file using a document id. Then there's no direct link to a file that can be downloaded. In these cases, the 'PDF Download' add-on simply returns a blank page. This leaves no way to get the file but to open IE! Fix the FF browser so that it recognizes PDFs and calls the necessary application (Acrobat, etc) and get rid of this adware plug-in that doesn't work anyway.

Not bad, some problems Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This is a useful utility to convert PDF to HTML. However, it only supports Latin characters. I had a document which had UTF-8 encoding and those non-asci characters got stripped.

It would be nice to be able to specify the encoding in the extension. I know pdftohtml utility supports that by adding "-enc UTF-8".

My Favorite Add-on Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I have to admit I'm surprised by the negative reviews here. I've been using this add-on for a long time (a year maybe) and it's the first one I add when using a new installation of FF.

Yes, you can set up FF to do a different thing when processing a PDF. What do you do if your preference depends on the situation? When Google returns PDFs, I just want to see the content. Yes, Google offers HTML versions, but PDF Download has a much better HTML renderer for PDF documents.

As for ad-ware/Nitro, I've been using this since before Nitro hired the developer and took over some of the management of the project (perhaps even bought the project). That's all part of the open source thing -- sometimes the developer takes a new job. Not surprisingly, free software development doesn't pay all that well.

And, it should be understood that the ads in this "ad-ware" are in the form of a slim bar at the top that, in effect, says "brought to you by...." No nasty pop-ups, no nasty lingering bots and such (as far as I know). I run Linux, so much of those don't work on my machine anyway.

Are there other tools out there just as good? I don't know. Maybe. But this one is perfect for the way I use the web -- each time I click on a PDF link, I'd like to select a way of processing it. In addition, I haven't seen a better HTML representation of PDF documents.

For what it's worth, I use the web primarily for work and the things that Acrobat Reader lack include very quick previews of PDFs and quick switching to downloading PDFs on a document-by-document basis. For that, this is a great tool.

Regards.

Best Add-On of All Time Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Adobe's plug-in will non install correctly, or Firefox is unable to recognize it. Either way, it is extremely annoying to have to download every pdf file you click on, and then manually erase each one. This has happened on more than one of our machines (all Intel-based Macs). Tried uninstalling and reinstalling more than once, as well as all of the other trouble-shooting steps that were recommended, but none of them worked. Downloaded this add-on and set the default action to "open pdf" and the problem was fixed in 2 minutes...
