I have a situation... When we tag all those "secret sites" with notawesome, it did the job or not showing in the location bar. But what if user go into the bookmark area, trying to type something like "not working" but in the midst of typing "not" all the "supposed to be hidden" bookmarks shows up (since it catch the tag "not")!! Since there is no way to hide a particular bookmark (at least for Firefox 3.6) you cannot prevent that. My suggestion is what about putting the term #notawesome as the tag to hide things in location bar? There is a much lesser chance that a user will type #not .... when searching for bookmark in the bookmark window, unless they intend to find all the hidden bookmark (which might be a good thing if the owner of those bookmarks want to manage them) But at least regular user will not be typing #not.. to find stuff.
However right now I will give it only 4 stars, considering that this is a test version, but that I found a few flaws in it: - as mongoes noticed, URLs with bookmarked sites that have a keyword appear despite the notawesome tag - tagging the site in bookmarks filters the bookmarked main site URL, but not URLs of the site pages that have been recorded in the history (bookmarked and tagged http://sitetohide.com will not appear in the bar, but http://sitetohide.com/visitedpage.html stored in history will).
Thank you Sid for this tool; I hope you will have time to improve it!
+3 for monogoes idea. First point he makes is yet available (at last I can do this) , but what I would appreciate a lot is a function to disable bookmarks with keywords. This is the only reason I would like to use NotAwesome.
I read about this at http://www.pcworld.com/article/172854/notawesome_firefox_addon_selectively_hides_your_history.html and had to check it out. I'm giving it 5 stars not just because the name, NotAwesome, is awesome, but because it's a great idea, very handy and super-easy to use.
That being said, for people unfamiliar with managing bookmarks, a little tutorial or explanation might be helpful. I was quickly able to figure out that it's managing the hidden bookmarks with a "notawesome" tag, which you can use to find your hidden bookmarks or remove to unhide bookmarks, but perhaps some people might have difficulty figuring that out. Pointing out the "Recent Tags" line in the Bookmarks dropdown would also probably be helpful. In fact, it might be best to add a "notawesome" option to the Bookmarks dropdown (Yoono is one add-on that does this) and then give people options for viewing and managing their hidden bookmarks.
It's still experimental, but it's really good and I'm sure it'll become even better.
This works pretty well for an experimental addon. I would add that you can easily select a bunch of links through the bookmark organizer and add the "notawesome" tag to them all simultaneously. Also, if you have a KEYWORD set for a link, it will show up in the awesomebar even when it has the "notawesome" TAG. Maybe this is something the dev can work on for future releases. Overall, a very good alternative to disabling the awesomebar all together.
