Judging from the reviews, NewTabURL has been broken for awhile.
So I will try a different addon called: New Tab Homepage
Hasn't worked for a few versions now and author clearly has no intention of fixing. 1 star.
Für die deutschsprachigen User:
GGITech hat weiter unten beschrieben wie das Addon mit FF13.x wieder funktioniert (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/newtaburl/reviews/356558/):
1. Das Addon NewTabURL entfernen
2. Änderungen in about:config entfernen:
Den Wert von "browser.newtab.url" leer lassen
"browser.newtabpage.enabled" auf True setzen
3. NewTabUrl erneut von addons.mozilla.org installieren
Funktioniert wunderbar - Kudos GGITech ! :-)
The new Firefox 13 does stupid things when you open a new tab. I slimmed down how to fix it for those like me who don't like fussing around...
Go to about:config (Write it in the address bar.)
Paste browser.newtab.url in to the blank bar on that screen that allows you to filter through.
Click Modify and then delete out the value.
Now close it.
Yeah!! No more stupid weirdness just a blank page when you click new tab.
If you're like me, you like to open a new tab and start typing right away for a search in google. about:config browser.newtab.url will set to google, but will set the address as the active bar. It was driving me nuts since I'd start typing right after opening a new tab every time then realize I have to click the search field.
Credit to and Thank you bbincc for your suggestion. I tried reinstalling newtaburl and it didn't work at first. Setting about:config browser.newtab.url to about:blank allows this addon to work correctly again where it will set the search field to active.
Leider funtktioniert dieses Add-on nicht mit Fiorefox 13
I love this addon but NewTabURL his obsolete on FF 13 and FF 14 bêta.
PLEASE update this addon Sogame.
I'm using FF13 with my home page set to Google and with about:config's browser.newtab.url equal to "about:blank." I removed this add-on and, of course, got blank pages for new tabs. I re-added this add-on, and it works! New tabs open to Google WITH cursor in the Google search box.
Use this: "My Homepage :: Add-ons for Firefox" it works great.
I've used this add-on for a while with great results, but it has been rendered obsolete in Firefox version 13. Similar to miko007's tip from 4/29/2012 below, you can now duplicate the behavior of this add-on within Firefox itself, and specify any URL new tabs should point to (in FF13 or later).
For example, if you want new tabs to always show Google, first type "about:config" (no quotes) in the URL bar , acknowledge the "I'll be careful" warning, scroll down to the "browser.newtab.url" entry, double click on it and type "http://www.google.com/" (again, no quotes) in the pop-up box. You can type whatever URL you'd like new tabs to go to, doesn't have to be Google. Once you've done this, AFAIK, you can disable or remove this add-on.
Other tips w/ new tabs: to show a blank page, use "about:blank" in the browser.newtab.url entry. To restore the newer thumbnail tab page, use "about:newtab".
The work-around by miko007 does work however I think ntu should work with FF13 by default.
Thank you so much for this plugin, and thanks for the fix to get it working on FF 13.
I have used NewTabURL for some time now and really enjoy the fact that I can open a new tab set up the way I like it and to the web site I enjoy. This works great and I have it installed on every computer I use Firefox on.
Depuis le temps que cherchais un moyen d'ouvrir automatiquement la barre de recherche Google, c'est exactement ce qu'il me fallait. Bravo et merci au concepteur
En plus ça marche parfaitement avec Firefox 3-5-15
Since Firefox 13Beta You have to make this change to have the Add-On Work :
Open the new tab and type about:config in the url bar, click ok at the "i'll be careful" warning and then copy and paste this browser.newtab.url into the search area.
Then when the preference appears double click on it and in the popup type about:blank click ok and viola a blank new tab is what you will have when you want one or NewTabURL will work again.
please update for firefox 13 becouse addon is not working on this version.
Excelente complemento, pois estava tentando encontrar de como solucionar as abas em branco no próprio Mozilla Firefox e não há, somente esse complemento solucionou o meu problema.......Valeu (Pt-br)
Excellent add-on, because I was trying to find how to solve the blank tabs in their own Mozilla Firefox and there is only this addon solved my problem ....... Thanks
@jjmcgaffey i have the same problem with showing homepage. when i scroll click with my mouse over 5 links. i sometimes get 5 links with my homepage ended or sometimes only 1. but newtaburl is doing this. i will contact them by email about this problem and forward them to those reviews over here.
I've been using NewTabURL for years, through many versions of Firefox. Unfortunately, with the latest version (9, and now 9.0.1), I've run into a glitch. When I do "open all in tabs", FF9 now creates a set of new tabs (rather than opening the first bookmark in the already-open tab), and the first tab that's opened shows the bookmark URL for a few seconds then jumps to my homepage, so I have to go back to my bookmarks and re-open that first one.. By disabling NewTabURL, I determined that it's this add-on that's causing the behavior. Therefore, I have to give it up (it's too annoying) - I'll try Tab Mix Plus and see if it works better for this. Any other suggestions? I'd love it if this add-on could be corrected to fix this glitch, but I can only hope the author reads reviews - there doesn't seem to be any way to contact him/her/them.
I have been using this add-on for 2 years now and I love it. Only recently (Jan. 10, 2012), I ran into a problem. Every time I started Firefox (4.0), multiple tabs would open to the homepage repeatedly with no way to stop it. Here is what I tried:
Start Firefox and IMMEDIATELY go to Tools> Add-Ons> Extensions > NewTabUrl > Options
and uncheck "Always Keep a New Tab Open" then close Firefox and start Firefox again.
This fixed the problem and stopped Firefox from opening multiple homepage tabs like crazy upon starting.
I don't know if this is a glitch in NewTabUrl or a conflict it may have with another add-on. But this was an easy fix. If anyone else is having this problem but this solution does not work for you, try creating a new Firefox profile with no add-ons. To do this - In windows, close Firefox then click Start > Run, type: Firefox.exe -p
Select create. Check "Always ask". Open Firefox with this new profile. If the problem stopped, you will need to close Firefox and then open Firefox again using your old profile (or safe mode) and disable all adds-ons, restart Firefox and then re-enable them one by one until you find out which is causing the issue. If you find that the add-ons are not the problem, try downloading a program called tdskiller.exe as you may have a rootkit on your system.
Simple, easy, does what I've wanted new tabs to do for years.. Open to your default homepage! Only thing I'd change is on first installation the Options window should open so you can set it without having to do it manually. Not a big deal.. 5 Stars!
I'm using this with FF 7.0.1. Overall it is simple and works. It even puts the cursor where I want it on loading. However I too have noticed the glitch where it overrides a specified URL that should be opened. In particular, I have Firefox set to restore my previous session on startup. Any tab that gets displayed while they are loading at this time is redirected to the NewTabURL default (and it's impossible for that not to affect at least one). Moreover, while the affected tabs do still have their history, if I use the Back button to go back to what it should have been, that somehow forces all the other tabs to reload *again*. I have never seen that happen in any other situation; something odd about the way the add-on forces the redirect, maybe? This would be a showstopper if I restarted every day.
I just want to open new tabs to Google by default (I don't understand why this option isn't built into Firefox already).
I was using TabMixPlus, but really that was like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. NewTabURL is smaller and simpler and does only what I want.
Nearly perfect. But I have noticed that sometimes when I click a link that should open a new tab (like an off-site download for example), rather than the proper site opening, it will open Google instead. I wonder if NewTabURL is over-riding when the new tab opens? Not enough of a problem for me to stop using the add-on, but something to be aware of.
I don't understand the people wanting instructions. The add-on is as simple as could be. Going in to the add-ons screen and adjusting options from there is pretty standard stuff.
Does exactly what I need! Now I got google.com in every tab I open. Thank you.
It doesn't matter how good something is if you can't figure out how to use it. It is absurd that users should have to bang there head trying to figure it out. If you people had translated the Rosetta stone, it would still be your little secret!
