Usable with Waterfox 56.0.3 on FreeBSD-CURRENT.
However: it seems that after a while, measurements cease (the MemChaser toolbar becomes empty). I guess that there'll be the same issue with Firefox 56.0.2.
Работает, когда браузер занял 480М оперативы, можно очистить до 360 ))
Но когда он разросся до 2011 Мб - ничего не удалось "отжать" у него. Не работает.
Подходит для рядовых задач.
Don't get me wrong, memory functions still work great, but it's quite hard to use MC comfortably. Having another toolbar just for the memchaser is out of the question, the least I need is more clutter. So, to use it, I have to activate the toolbar first; inconventient in any way, and I can't see the numbers all the time like I'm used to. There are plenty of places where to put MC except S4E (which I do have and is very useful BTW), and I have done it - to the main toolbar like all other extensions do by default; to the menu bar if activated, and finally at least it can be put in the main menu - it's not visible all the time, but at least it's not hard to get.
Please do something and I promise 5 stars for the functionality! ;)
Thanks for your feedback. So the extra toolbar is actually a limitation of the Add-on SDK which Memchaser makes use of. It means if you want to display more than a simple icon, a new toolbar has to be used. It bugs us the same way, but we currently don't have the manpower to rewrite this add-on to make use of a better technique. Maybe the Web extensions feature might give us more opportunities soon.
Memchaser now shows as a toolbar and I cannot get it to show in the add-on bar/status bar like it used to. I tried going to customize and it's not showing there and I cannot drag the memchaser icon from that toolbar to the add-on bar either. Uninstalling it and installing it again didn't solve it.
Thanks for your feedback. Actually there is no add-on bar anymore. That one has been removed and the only way add-ons can require more space via the Add-on SDK is to use their own toolbar. Because of that limitation and some others we are currently exploring ways how to make a better experience. Please note that we are currently limit in our time so we don't expect a new release coming out soon. Version 0.7 has been released to keep memchaser at least running at all.
Installed, FF restarted (but the extension didn't say I had to) but nothing is displayed on the status bar (I use Status-4-Evar), when other display (from other extensions) are correctly displayed...
answer : thanks for the answer. If I don't use status-4-evar there is no more status bar in FF (since version... 30 ? before ?), so I don't understand how your extension could display anything in a "missing status bar" without it... ? (I refer to the screenshot you publish)
I don't know what you mean with "customize palette" ?
If you have a forum or a mail I'd be pleased to use it instead of posting review for support.
answer 2 :
I don't get it,
Without S4E : https://i.imgur.com/zF99CfC.png
there is no more status bar in FF, so your extension is not showing anything
With S4E : https://i.imgur.com/Hq02Fq0.png
it brings back the status bar, I see elements from other extensions appearing again (xmarks, translation...) but not your extension, unlike the screenshot you show.
I'm not sure why you expect the extension needs a restart after installation. If none is requested, it's not necessary. Here we have a restartless add-on, which works right away.
If you have problems with seeing the memory data, you should first check if status-4-evar is causing problems, before submitting negative review. Also you might want to check the customize palette for the memchaser entry.
simple and usefull addon to control memory usage
It works very well.
Very usefull. A must have add-on!
Does all it says and more. The memory reporting seems very accurate, neck and neck with Activity Monitor (Mac OS). I have done careful benchmark testing to check out several other addons that claim on-demand recovery of memory, and they flat haven't worked.
A simple little app that fills its shoes very well. Nice job.
Just as info:
After changing min-version in install.rdf the new version (0.5.2) works fine in up-to-date Firefox 17.0.3 ESR.
Thanks for the work.
"Known issues: Dark Personas or Themes cause an unreadable text in the add-on bar."
Just for the record, I have the same problem with the standard theme. I just see a large blank space in the add-on bar where the extension display should be. (Current Firefox Aurora on Windows, but I recall having the same problem on the release version. What FF versions is this known to display correctly in?)
It is nice to be able to trigger CC and GC on demand.
For a future rev, it would be nice to replace the display block with an icon, that would show the display block in a tooltip if moused over. Have enough addons, and you begrudge the space taken in the bar
The theme issue should have been fixed a while back. If you install a dark theme you will have to restart Firefox. Then you should see a light color for the text. Doesn't that happen?
Upcoming versions of the SDK will not allow addons to put that much information in the bar. Once that feature has been shipped your enhancement request will automatically be fulfilled.
Thanks for your feedback!
can we please have an option to change the display colours cause with most of these firefox personas i cannot see the display
This will be fixed in the next version of MemChaser which gets an upgrade to the Addon SDK. We will release it hopefully soon.
Hey dude, very good addon, but not to see with black skin. Correct the color of letters as in all other addons ok! So thus was excellent...
MemChaser works well enough, but it's very obviously an alpha. The memory usage seems accurate. Although it doesn't match Task Manager (lol), it does match Process Explorer, and that's what matters.
It'd be handy if it implemented the functionality of this addon, saving me an addon:
They definitely need to fix the little red button. I don't want in in the bottom right. I either want to disable it or throw it in the menubar along with all the memory information. Resetting the position constantly is just downright annoying. I already have 20 other little icons down there from other addons that insist on throwing crap in the statusbar. (Or, sorry, it's an "Addonbar" now)
Well, MemChaser looks like it'll help.
You could disable extensions step by step to figure out which of those are causing the high memory usage. Otherwise check about:memory?verbose which lists compartments for websites and extensions. Probably it should be easier to figure out the causing extension. In any case it is worth filing a bug on Bugzilla. If you do so please cc :whimboo.
I will give it more stars if it can do...
1. I don't do logging, that red button is useless so it is better if i can disable it.
2. Customize the position/style of the text
3. Quick button/menu item to restart Firefox
4. Quick button/menu item to force Garbage Collection ?
5. Alert if Firefox consumes too much memory ??
This add-on has some potential! Some others are not usable /buggy
Great work but still has problems.
- 1. Visibility with darker theme: Black characters with dark theme?
- 2. Too wide: Compact view is preferable, which could be option.
Thank you for the review and the noted issues. At the moment we can't do anything for dark Personas due to a bug in the Add-on SDK (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=718015). I hope we can get it fixed soon. A similar issue affects us for the width. We will work on it. But what do you mean with compact view in detail? Lesser information or simply killing the unused empty space?
