Does what it says on the tin... The options UI could be a little flashier / more user friendly, but it's fine.
I signed up for an account just to say what a great tool Leechblock is. One of my new goals is "stop wasting time!" And I found that most of the time I waste each day is on the internet. I also found it is more like an addiction that I have trouble stopping.
Leechblock allows you to find a perfect balance, encourages self discipline and productivity. I've been able to get LEECHblock to do everything I want it to do without needing to look at a manual (a lot of flexibility and a very well thought out program).
I HOPE the programmer keeps updating it!!! I think that once more people start to realize what a life sucker the internet can be, this tool will be a godsend for them. If leechblock goes away, I am doomed to my internet addiction :(
OOPS i have to hurry up with this review because I only have 30 minutes of internet time ;)
I love LeechBlock. When I take breaks from paper-writing I tend to spend way too long distracting myself with social networking or recipe sites. I have it set to allow me 10 minutes of distraction every third hour from 8:00 to 6:00, which are my usual studying hours. This is AWESOME for keeping me on task.
A great feature would be a reverse-block list, where you set up a list of sites you can access during the blocked time and block all others.
Thanks for the review. Actually, you can set up a reverse-block list already, using the wildcard (*) and exception (+) features. See the examples page for details.
This add-on seems great. Originally I thought sites would have to be entered one at a time, which would be a bit of a pain. However, it turns out you can drag and drop a bookmarks folder right into the list of sites for a group, which is great.
The only issue I've found is that when a lockdown is in place for one or more groups, it is impossible to begin a lockdown on other groups. You have to first manually end the current lockdown. (Of course, if a person has the various blocks in place to prevent them doing that, then it would be completely impossible.) It should be possible to add groups to lockdown and/or extend the lockdown for the current group while it is in effect. (Of course, I can see how this will be a bit of a coding challenge to not allow the lockdown to be shortened with this method, or groups to be removed. But certainly surmountable, and necessary!)
As a heavy social network user, I use this to focus myself on web development again. Works fine, especially the detailled customization makes it a worthy tool. However, e.g. when writing a message on facebook, It would be helpful if Leechblock uttered a warning before the site is blocked - sometimes, many lines of text are lost. Keep it up!
I actually just want to ask a question - is there no way of doing that without writing a review? I have no problem reviewing but have only used the extension for 15 mins so far.
Review so far: seems very easy to use, and is indeed blocking Facebook just fine.
Question: once I block a site is there no convenient way of knowing how long this site is blocked for? I'm not blocking on a schedule, more like for x minutes at a time.
EDIT - its now the next morning and Facebook is still blocked, even though I just blocked it for 15 mins. And I cant figure out how to unblock it. I went to lockdown and unchecked the blockset but still.
You can find support/contact information in the "About this Add-on" box and by following the links on the right-hand side of that box.
Unfortunately the community support forum is defunct now.
Regarding your question, I recommend you take a look at the examples page to confirm that you have the correct settings.
rendered COMPLETELY USELESS by going to: Firefox button>Help>Restart with Addons Disabled (then can just uninstall)yes, my willpower is poor. PLEASE update the addon to disable the "Restart with Addons Disabled" function (then would be 5 stars, otherwise a great addon).
EDIT: thank you for the superfast reply! i was thinking it didn't make much sense for such a basic thing to possibly have been ignored..
full 5 stars for fantastic addon and a very diligent dev who cares about the users! :)
You'll find that setting under LeechBlock Options > Access Control > Browser Modifications.
It works great and it has definitely increased my productivity!
No more wasting too much time on Facebook during school days for this guy :)
I have seen this addon some time ago and decided to test it. Oh, what a lucky day. I used to lose almost entire days in addictive sites that I not even liked. Geez, there are those sites where I just visit to become angrier! Now I've put them all in the black list and I have time again!
I believed I would just cheat and remove the sites from the blacklist, but it does not happen. Sometimes it is just a reflex, a knee-jerk Control+T and quick lookup in the history to access some leech. Leechblock give me the time to reflect about it.
It is great too because I can even add exceptions to the rules, which is important for some sites (e.g. I do not want to see my Twitter timeline but I'd like to share some link, so I enable the sharing URL).
Summing up: IT WORKS! (Or at least worked to me). Try it!
I was close to dropping out of school because of my reddit addiction, and now I haven't been there for weeks! Thanks!
not working on iframe
example: the url * iframe display *.example.* despite the adons already appear in the block if the iframe does not work at all
Thank you for this! Technology distractions are way too many nowadays and I've ended up with an OCD that makes me check facebook and mail and whatnot every 5 minutes. This add on will help me get rid of this compulsion and actually get some work done. It's assisted self-discipline. :)
Thank you! LeechBlock works great, has a great blend of functionality that both locks time wasters away from me when I need to stay productive, and gives me a couple of minutes to rethink whether I want to follow that vested rabbit down that particular hole.
I love this. Easy to use. Way more features than I need. I wish you had it on Chrome and IE. That would keep me even more focused.
I found it very useful to reduce wastage of time. Very glad to have leech block. Thanks for making a great add-on
I've been using this for a while now. Whenever I find yet another website that keeps me distracted, I add it to the list. Eventually I'll have my dissertation done, but probably much sooner thanks to LeechBlock!
I just tried to log on to facebook to check on someone who had crossed my mind. I did this as a matter of reflex, not even thinking about it. I used to do this routinely for hours just sucking up my day. Now I get this message:
"The page you're attempting to access has been blocked by LeechBlock."
And it snaps me out of my dream.
A great extension, which makes work more efficient.
Helping me quit a porn addiction. This is great thank you so much, you are saving my life. I love the way you can bock access to the addon page and the options. Also the about:config section. Awesome.
Doesn't work with the add-on "Suspend Background Tabs" if the option: "Count time spent on these sites only when browser tab is active" is checked
I can't thank the developer enough for helping me stay on task. I wish that a similar program was available for my computer, not just for websites -- like a parental controls without actually using parental controls. In any case, I have two minor requests:
1.) Please limit the number of attempts for "requirement for access to options"
2.) Provide a 256-character access code
Easy-to-use and well-developed Plug-In. There is nothing comparably good on the market, not for Firefox, Chrome or IE and all the others.
Keep the good work up!
A very great add-on, the only one which I will refer to everyone to have a good success and avoid time killer and distracting websites.
Leechblock is SOOOO useful for so many people like myself… I just wish one could choose a much longer access code than 128. 1000 would be more dissuasive !!!!
The only problem I have is cosmetic -- the leechblock toolbar button is too high with that little arrow underneath it, and makes my toolbar take up additional space on top that it shouldn't need to.
Also, it would be nice if there were some way to mark a block set as "disabled", so I can turn it off without losing my settings for that block. The blocks come in really handy for days I'm supposed to be working, but they're fairly annoying when I'm taking the day off and want to browse more distracting sites.
