shut down? Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I'm afraid the google dictionary service has been definitively shut down. I found the GoogleDefine Search Engine as an alternative, although the results are less detailed and more confusing, since they are mixed with another web results.
Thanks to the author for so much useful tool, being available for a quite long time.

Chrome extension is better. The double click feature in chrome to get the word meaning on overlay is much better than opening a whole new page.

Nice to see this on here. Extremely useful.
I used this on Chrome and it's great to be able to highlight a word and have the definition pop up in a little box. Is that possible in Firefox or is it only possible in chrome for now?

I experienced the same problem as above, and found out that probably the ones who cannot install it (as I couldn't) actually already have it in the search bar.

There is a misunderstanding for many of us are looking for the equivalent of the chrome extension 'google dictionary' which works in the browser by popups and with a separate searchbar. This extension is a (however nicely working) search plugin.

Best dictionary search add-on I've come across. I prefer this over the dictionary.com search add-on.

I also have the same problem, please let me know if there any update. I use this add-on on Google chrome and is wonderful.

try looking for the add-on file

Everything works fine for me, don't know how to re-create this on my machine.

Try searching for the "googledictionary.xml" file in your hard drive and removing it. Then try reinstalling.

Please let me know if you find a fix, thanks!

Problem with the install Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Hi esfandia,

I am trying to download this wonderful add-on, however, I am getting an error message telling me it cannot download it because an engine using the same name already exists. I re-installed Firefox and tried it again and got the same message... I'm running FFX 3.6.3. Have you seen/heard of this before? The add-on is not showing up in my list of installed add-ons, btw. Thanks! ~Delores

working for me

Hi Delores,

Everything works for me here, I've never heard of this error before. Have you tried adding a different search add-on to see if the problem is with the add-on or with your install? If adding other add-ons works, you may want to inspect the folder containing your add-ons and see if there is something afoot there. That folder might be corrupted for some reason, and re-installing Firefox might not change that.

I was hesitant to install this because of the icon. I've been frustrated with the Wiktionary search on another computer because of this very issue. But, know what? Esfandia updated it (or Google did - I don't know where the icon comes from). BTW, I also happened to install Wiktionary on this machine at the same time and it has a new icon, too! Thanks to everybody involved for the search add-on and for the icon updates!

Great tool. I agree with hugcape, it is very necessary to have a different Search tool icon as you can't visually tell if you have the Google Dictionary or Google Search selected. Four Stars because of the confusing icon issue, Five Stars otherwise.

favicon fixed

Thanks for your feedback! The new version that became public today comes with a new favicon that addresses the confusion.
