An update on my last review: I was having trouble with the right side showing up lighter than the left, turns out it was my system theme.
I changed to a windows 7 theme for windows 8, and now it looks like this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20887877/Jing/2013-04-26_1503.png
I don't really mind, so I'll be sticking with it, but if anyone else has a similar problem, it can probably be fixed by trying different themes.
Love this add on, thanks again!
It has been working like a charm, but since the last Youtube's user interface update and the black video player window became transparent which makes it annoying to watch a video. Gonna be cool if you fixed that. Thanks.
Are you using some of the expert tweaks from options panel? Some of them are not fully suitable for e.g. Adobes plug-ins.
I finally found it I saw it once in Opera and I always wanted to find it in Firefox. Turns out I was looking in the wrong way (I was looking in Theme's)
Anyway it is perfect if I have to chance 1 thing it would be that it was also a glass background when you open a new tab.
But great work I love it
To get the glass background when opening a "new tab" you need to select two expert tweaks from GMFs options area:
Transparent "about:newtab" page (with Stylish) and
Transparent "about:blank" page (with Stylish).
This trick only works with Stylish installed and enabled. (No setup is needed inside Stylish add-on).
The theme "Noia 4" offers a transparent skin too using its theme manager extension.
Nice but 2 things:
-Glas tabs 6 inverted would be cool ( so that only the active tab is white).
-Haves problems with Status-4-Evar -> the green progresbar is turns to a light green bar.
I can add a new "Glass tabs v6 inverted" entry on next update.
The light green progress bar is not a bug, but a feature.
If you have Stylish installed, you can simply override it by using this code:
opacity: 1.0 !important;
Great work and love this to death. I found only one glitch as it conflicts with Personas. Any chance of fixing this as I like my animated lighting. I have my own artsite and this sort of add on will be popular among our members. I'll promote it even if this can't be resolved. When I uncheck Main Window, it partially returns but isn't in the right place. thanks for this wonderful item. Will send you a donation as soon as I can and hope a few on my site who can use it will do the same.
Just a note. I could not reply to Aris so I wrote him an email. I thoroughly enjoy this addon and the more I have used it, the more I enjoy this. I hope he can make it compatible with Personas but if not, I can live with GlassMyFox as is because it is absolutely fabulous :)
Thanks for review.
The option to "glass" all main toolbars wasn't made to work with Themes or Personas. In fact both do the same to toolbars: changing background (image/color). GMF removes background images and colors to let Windows "AeroGlass" feature to do the work.
Which OS and which Persona are you using?
From my tests I see "disabling" "main window glass settings" in GMF leaves Personas untouched.
Unfortunately it is not possible to reply to replies inside comments area. Editing previous comment or posting a new one are the only possibilities in that case to "update" a comment.
To have a proper discussion it is recommended to use the support site/forum or writing emails like you already did.
You wrote you like to have semi transparent web sites. The problem in this case is the way "Personas" are used by Firefox. There is is no way to override inside "transparent content code" what Personas do to Firefox window background. I'm not talking about the toolbar images, but about the content background.
it's a good plugin.
You have to disable the last two expert settings to avoid problems with pdf viewer plugins.
Great add on, offering more than I could ask for
However I have 1 question/suggestion. Is it possible to transparent just 1 specific tab? I want to transparent my homepage (modified with add on) and if I use the normal feature it will disable and replace the homepage. If I use the Tab content transparent it will transparent everythings which hurts my eyes after awhile (it would be very very nice to have a button to turn that on/off)
So can you add some kind of list to transparent some tabs (like homepages, new tabs, YT...) instead of every tabs?
I'm not sure if I understood you right. By "tabs" you mean indeed the tabs or the content of a tab?
It is only possible to style
'selected tab' (pinned/unpinned),
'hovered tab (pinned/unpinned),
'default tab = not selected/hovered tab' (pinned/unpinned),
'hovered new tab',
'default new tab = not hovered new tab'
It is not possible to style a tab for a specific website/url.
It is also not possible to make only one specific website transparent.
To change styles on a website '@-moz-document rules' are needed, but they cannot change Firefox gui/xul, if specified for a website, see https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/CSS/@document
I cannot figure out how to reply to your questions in my previous review so I have to make a new post.
Re TGM, we did several tests already in the past (I think on Mozilla Forums) where i posted several screeshots: if you use black as background colour of the TGM bar it has a dusty, opaque look.
The funny thing is that only when your extension is updated, for a second, the bar has a great shiny, deep black look.
Anyway I am aware TGM is dying: some developer should adopt it! ^ ^.
AIOS well maybe you guys could discuss it.
Anyway the big problem is not working inside AIOS but the totally clear drop down menus (until you find out how to get rid of that).
Thanks for the import\export option! :)
Could you send me an email containing your TGM settings exported to a file?
BTW, you can "edit" your post here, if needed. A new rating only replaces your old one. ;-)
Many thanks for your kind and comprehensive answer with explanation. Shame that it is not possible.
There is a Metro+ project on deviantART, that may become what Glass fans want. There is no release date yet.
Latest version??? = Wow!!! = thank`s so much, latest reiteration in A + !!!. :D
Very amazon effect!
Easy to use and many custom options which make the interface personalized.
when I update my firefox from 3.6.28, I found this great extension, AeroBuddy is not capitable with fx 10.0 again
This is beautiful. I like the transparent look it gives to my FF.... and it has a customization menu.
Super add-on !!!
one of the best add-on`s to style your firefox.. I like it very much. Great !!!
This is by far my favorite theme, and a great add on for firefox. It looks great, and has a lot of options to customize and make it your own.
Working good on firefoxESR 10.0.7
on windows 8 RTM i use it for "No border/no background" nightly button and for transparent tabs that get colored in the same color as window borders and taskbar
thats well enough for me for this windows 8 test drive
i'm glad that this add-on is compatible with windows 8
Thanks for a great add-on! It brought me back to firefox from using chrome. :) However, I recently updated to version 1.2, and my add-ons, bookmarks, history, etc no longer have transparent backgrounds like they used to :( I'm using All-in-one sidebar, too, so I don't know if it's some sort of conflict, but it was working before. You look to be very active, so I would appreciate some help :(
Update: I installed the dev build 1.2.1 and enabled main window, tabs, library, pref windows/dialogs/etc, dropdown menu (I even restarted), download window, buttons, and toolbar tips. The Downloads window is semi-transparent, but bookmarks, add-ons, history, info and multi-panel are all still non-transparent. I'd like to be able to set all of these to transparent or at least semi-transparent :/
You have to go to your add-ons manager -> GMF -> options and select the FF areas you want to be glassy. Before v1.2 there was one setting for all areas. Now users have more settings to customize FF by enabling/disabling "the glass effect" for major parts of the FF gui.
I suggest to use the latest devbuild from here:
It has more settings for tabs and some other fixes 1.2 doesn't have.
Could you uninstall GMF, restart FF and reinstall GMF? Maybe there is something wrong with some settings.
This is how it looks here, if all main glass settings are enabled:
Can you upload a screenshot too?
Are you using any toolbar add-ons that could have a breaking effect on the GMF gui?
Could you look into supporting the Shine Bright skin? It's working just fine with V4 tab with Pale Moon 12.3 but with Firefox 15 the edges of the tabs aren't getting made transparent. Thanks.
Not quite what I had in mind.. A picture might help.
This appearance is what I'm hoping to maintain.
GMF is for default theme only, but you can use this Stylish css code and make GMFs tabs compatible with Shine Bright skin.
-moz-border-image: none !important;
border-radius: 2px !important;
text-shadow: none !important;
margin-right: 2px !important;
Now almost all of GMFs tab settings should look fine using Shine Bright theme, but I have a question: Why using a theme and GMF together? Making all toolbars transparent doesn't keep much of themes appearance, does it?
I see what you mean, but I cannot fix this. Tabs got corrupted on "Shine Bright" somewhere between FF14 and FF15.
The author needs to fix his tabs for FF15+, because they are acting weird and look broken on FF15+, even without other extensions installed.
While I find GlassMyFox absolutely suited to my personal preferences, I just updated it to v1.2 today and found myself having to configure the addon from scratch, as it was mentioned on the release notes. So far so good, new options, new configuration window layout, but when I selected my previously used Glass tabs v3, it has now a very dim white text that's hard to read and gives entirely unnecessary eye strain. I selected each Tabs set, and found out that the developer remove the single set I actually liked. Basically, the old Glass tabs v3 has the high enough brightness and contrast of the current 1.2 Glass tabs v1 plus the highlighted active tab.
Please add this configuration back, I'm literally in pain now, as I actively use tabs, and I most certainly don't want to stop using this amazing work of an addon of yours.
EDIT: Basically, the current 1.2 Glass tabs v1 with a bright selected tab rather than a dark selected tab would be perfect.
EDIT2: Just uninstalled 1.2 and reinstalled 1.1.1, in which Glass tabs v3 works as intended. Given that such version has already future compatibility, I will be using it and not updating for the foreseeable future. Do note that this doesn't detract from the overall experience at all, I won't take any other visual style, so congrats for your work once again :)
you are right. I changed some tab settings in v1.2, but not everybody was pleased with them. I already uploaded the next devbuild on 07-22-2012 that restores the tabs from 1.1.1 and adds tabs from v1.2 as seperate settings. Just install v1.2.1pre1 from here https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/160133/glassmyfox-1.2.1pre1-fx-windows.xpi ( https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/glassmyfox/versions/ ) and select the tabs you like.
The changes in v1.2 are mainly for FF15+ where the tabs are on top by default. I wanted them to be more appropriate, but I guess everybody likes to be able to chose, so v1.2.1 will just have more settings. ;-)
I think you deserve an award for this! This is the best add-on ever! Please keep on updating this! AWESOME!
Any possibility on making one for Chrome?
I don't thing it is possible on Google Chrome. Its GUI is not as customizable as Firefox GUI.
Overall a very solid extension, but the latest Firefox seemed to have changed something; None of the 'glass' options give me a look I like, where the current tab is 'brighter' than the rest. Either the current tab blends in or is darker, which is counter intuitive. If I could get the exact inverse of "Glass Tab v3" that'd be perfect.
Edit: Dunno what all you changed with this new version, because now "Glass Tabs v2" is absolutely perfect. Thank you!
I changed tabs back to the old ones from v1.1.x and added the newer ones from v1.2 as own selectable tabs. There are now two versions of 'Glass Tab v3', normal and inv., selectable on add-ons manager, but I think the 'normal v3' is now what you are looking for. Can you give me some feedback?
Please add again "Glass Tabs" option
Go to the settings (Add-ons->Extensions->GlassMyFox->Options) and select your glass tabs from the corresponding setting. I haven't removed it. ;-)
