i tried other add-ons but gathera is the best!
According to the web site, this is the plugin version of a web application. I wanted to try that first, but couldn't find it. (?!?!) So I decided the plugin was the next easiest thing. Being unobservant, it took me a while to find the single change the plugin made to my browser UI: a toolbar button. (Jeez, people, displaying a help page as part of the installation process is not that hard.) When you click the button, the new sidebar appears. But mine immediately threw a network error message. It offered to register me anyway, so now it's stuck in a "waiting" mode. Somebody left out the error handling code! This is where I give up.
What is it about social network aggregaters? You'd think it would be a hot application, but so far all it's attracted is under-resourced flakes. My appetite got whetted by Yoono, which revived my interest in social networking by making it easier to track all my accounts. But Yoono has problems (I no longer bother with the plugin; the standalone version is just functional enough to be worth the trouble), and the people behind it don't seem to have their act together. So I went looking for alternatives. Alas, Yoono is actually the best of the bunch!
I really can't judge Gathera, because after opening the Facebook account in Gathera I wanted to do the same for Flickr, but my Flickr ID is not an emailadress and Gathera persists on it being an emailadress. If this is not well thought over, much more will be likely.
And trying to send a message on their site (Support) fails every time.
Yes, they do need better help pages / instructions. To start this app after installing, you have to click on the menu item View > Sidebar and select Gathera.
It used to be slow and a bit buggy, but I stuck with it because the others did not have all the features I was looking for. Overall, it works fine for me now.
this did not work on my computer.
I've tried Yoono and Meebo...those are terrible.
the only thing that truly works is Digsby, but that's chat only, no status updates....
a little help from somebody???
I have been using gathera for a while. I find it very useful and convenient that I can check all my frequently visited sites in one place at the same time. I think gathera is a very useful and convenient addon for firefox. I have been looking for something like this for a long time. I wish it supported more sites. Hopefully they will come out with more soon. I highly recommend gathera and think everyone should use it.
After installing, you need a Gathera account. I tried going to there website to get starting in setting up an account but it was nothing there that pointed you where to set it up.
Fishy addon to say the least. When you install the 6MB extension (there must be a reason for that size right?) they don't tell you in the licence you approve they'll install a Gathera app in your program files ... that will also change your settings for the flv player you've or that it will launch automatically when your system reboots.
The worst part is that when you uninstall the addon, the software is left there, not removed , and there is no way to remove it with an uninstaller , you're left with a folder full of junk and registry entries that you have to del.
I'm on a XP SP3 and FF 3.5.2 , the sidebar the gathera button displayed never showed anything and there are no options for the plugin.
And it also redirected me to a non-iso-europe foreign language webpage, who knows what would it do had I not a fw and ad-blocker.
Fishy addon to say the least. I discourage you to install it. A 6MB addon that installs a FLV player in your pc that when you reboot starts running in the background (fishy , fishy). If you read the license they don't say you install additional software in your program files folder but they do.
When rebooted after the install I got suddenly redirected to a foreign (non iso-8) spoken language web page.
Also, on a XP SP3 with Firefox 3.5.2 the gathera button will be there but the sidebar won''t display anything at all and there are no options for the plugin.
There is also no way to uninstall the program from your computer, no uninstller, nothing. I'm cleaning it by deling and removing any trace I found from my registry file.
I recommend you not to install it and check what it has done to your computer if you have.
This is one AWESOME extension!! Probably one of the most complete 'Social' addons out there. Love it thoroughy!! Great Job.
I really love this add-on! The UI is so great for my Twitter, Digg, Facebook and Yahoo accounts. It seems to just get better with each version.
Love the concept!! But on 3.1b3, once I install this and restart it says 'Gathera was not installed properly'. Tried it on a clean profile and yet the same message. Please sort out this bug. Want to use this.
Seems to crash the latest trunk build for me. I really wanted to try and use this extension so i hope whatevers making it crash on the trunk is worked out. I give it a 3 alone just on the idea!
