Works very well, but like for another reviewer it only worked after install, after browser restarted the toolbar icon disappeared on FF52.2.1 ESR But, after few more restarts it appeared again an so far worked good.
Two suggestions though: 1) add option to the popup to open options 2) make toolbar button as button with an arrow dropdown, where pressing the button does user defined default action, and clicking on arrow opens additional options (just like it is now)
Thanks. This sounds petty, but opening more tabs just to minimize memory usage gets old... and when the browser is already being sluggish, it is kind of a pain. This little icon does just the trick without the extra tabs.
Notification popup is too LARGE and INTRUSIVE. There should be some way to adjust its SIZE and location and duration other than disabling it . Otherwise Free Memory works well on FF52. The automatic timing feature is nice except for the notification popup. Im sure this addon has saved me from many firefox freeze-ups. Fix the popup for five stars. Thanks.
Seemed like a good extension and worked great upon the first installation. However, when restarting Firefox, it never worked again. Removing and reinstalling the extension does nothing to remedy the problem. Too bad. Would have been useful. Hopefully the author can fix this issue with a future update.
I'm on FF50.1.0 on Linux and when using FF through geckodriver(0.11.1) with selenium standalone server(3.0.1) I have a very fast increase in memory usage when making subsequent requests. It is actually not the firefox process but the plugin_container that increments by 1Gb every 20/25 requests. It is really not clear what is happening there. This add-on, because of the automatic (time based) memory purge calls, solves the problem. Great job!
Style, though: the confirmation panel is far too obtrusive, and even demands my action. I know you are 'important' in yourself, but could you make it about 1/4 of the size, please, and fade out on a 2-second timer? (I hoped the panel size options referred to the notify panel. Alas not.)
Similarly, the option panel has needless white space, I'd prefer something compact.
Also include the "measure and save" options? Sometimes that would be helpful.
It does the same job as the about:memory Minimize Memory Usage does with less clicks.
But I have a couple suggestions. One is to make a second icon that minimizes the memory in one click. And let me choose which one to put on my bar. It saves one click from choosing the collection and help choices.
Second is to allow me to select how many seconds I want to see the popup banner when I'm using the timer. A twenty seconds banner is too long of a distraction.
So, it's really a pretty good addon and my suggestions are just cosmetic not functional. Good job!
Love Free Memory (FM) version 2.0. Easy options to choose from. Lots of features. Including a timer for automated memory clean up, and configuring its panel size to your liking. And FM is quick. Also it works well with Firefox 45.2.0 on Debian Wheezy 7.
As for the challenges. The upgrade path from FM version 1 to 2 could be improve. It's hard to find. Many if not most of the users will miss it. As users have to read the documentation to find the version 2. Most users don't read the documentation of any add-ons. I suggest for the next version 1 update to add a popup offering to user an automated update from version 1 to 2. We would be happy to contribute testing and documentation.
This add-on is very good, it makes it so much easier to free memory, and even visit the about:memory page.
I like the fact that it has the options to perform Garbage and Cycle Collection, as well as Memory Minimization.
There are a couple of minor issues (for which I docked 1 Star).
First, and this is very small, when you install it the panel size is 10px too small for content, resulting in a scroll bar. There is also no option to remove the "Help" link, and since I know how to use the add-on, I would appreciate an option to remove it. It would also be useful to have a "Browser Restart" option, since that often reduces the memory the most.
Lastly, though I have not changed the overall rating based on this, it does not say how much RAM the browser is currently using.
Overall, it is a very useful add-on, and good to have in your toolkit!
I've been using this for a while assuming that it actually did something and today I used it with Activity Monitor open and I see that it INCREASES the memory used! That's right, every time I click the three selections (Garbage Collection, Cycle Collection and Memory Minimization) Firefox uses MORE memory!
I never used the previous version so no comparison here.
Since I used this add-on, firefox had huge memory management issues. I noticed when I click on memory minimisation, windows task manager showed spike in FF memory usage.
Also the startup time was considerably high and initially i did not tie it to this add-on. But when I checked the startup only add-on that was in the startup was the Memory 2. I have no clue why it needed to be put it in there since the add-on is only calling inbuilt memory functions of FF.
Disabling the add-on was not enough to remove the startup entry and no improvement in FF. So even when disabled the startup is calling this app and the code does not suspends this entry. Only upon removal of this add-on the startup entry is removed and FF is back to excellent condition. This add-on is probably the worst thing I ever installed on FF..
Haven't tried this out, but this is a biggest take on the Free Memory add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/freememory/), which it was broken on newer versions of Firefox. Definitely worth the wait!
