enabling HTML replace kills vbulletin forms Rated 1 out of 5 stars

even if the string to be replaced is nonsense/not in page

I wish it didn't break other stuff Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This is awesome, but when enabled a bunch of "submit" buttons stop working completely on different websites... had to disable this.

Hi, this shouldn't happen if you don't use HTML in input & output and don't enable the script substitution checkbox. Please create a new issue at https://github.com/Woundorf/foxreplace/issues or write me an email and I'll try to help you avoid the problem.

Smart idea Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thanks. Smart idea. Autochange for all - it's cool!

OK, but won't work under various conditions Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I've been using this a while, and there are some things I've noticed. One, it doesn't automatically work with Java-based pages, so sites that autoload like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and YouTube won't work on the autoloaded parts, or at all for some sites when going to a new page when you're already on that site.

Secondly, I just noticed that using a proxy totally negates the auto-replace function even when it's on. I was connected to a Japanese proxy and was surprised to find strong profanity on the page even though auto-replace was on.

However, in both these cases, right clicking the page and manually selecting "Replace with substitution list (FoxReplace)" still works.

There's also the fact that to totally remove all variations of words, you need to set up tons of very specific substitutions, because it only substitutes the string you enter. For example, if you set up a substitution for a certain four-letter word starting with "F," replacing it with a blank space, you'll probably see things like "ing," "mothering," "motherer," etc. because it's not removing the rest of the word.

Another thing that may bug you is that it also replaces forms. I set up FoxReplace to change "ising" to "izing" because I'm more familiar with the American spellings of words, but this is obviously too broad a rule, because some such spellings retain the S. So if I submit a form to a website that says "rizing" instead of "rising," I look stupid.

Just be aware of all these things.

The addons is working perfect. The only issue i encountered is that the actual text replace happens 1 second after page load and user can see the old text for a brief second.
Is there a way to fix that and do it quicker?

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.16.1.1-signed).

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately there's no way to avoid that brief second, the substitutions are applied after the page has finished loading.

It works, but it took me a couple hours of pulling my hair out, to figure out that, the replace doesn't work with something as simple as LINE BREAKS in the HTML, unless you specifically change each line break to \n

The Substitutions Replace textbox should detect line breaks in pasted text.

Nice but it doesn't work on all sites Rated 2 out of 5 stars

I use this add on to remove an offending name from the text I read. And it works nice most of the time. But it's quite a bummer that thereś apparently no replacing going on on facebook or 9gag. :(

Hi, this is a known limitation. There's a kind of workaround that is to enable the "Replace every x seconds" option.

Super Powerful (Updated) Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I always like to manipulate webpages to my satisfaction. This is after all why I choose to use Firefox. This addon can do the jobs of several of my other addons, and more.

For one, I can view directly real-size embedded images instead of undersized ones. Some images end with suffix like "-600x800.jpg". An user can access the real-size ones by simply removing the dimension string from URL. Until now, I have to open the image in a new tab, and use a URL redirector to show the image I want to see. With this addon, I can save bandwidth, and load them all at once.

I also use it to override css. I used to do this with userContent.css, but this way requires restart. I especially loathe floating navbar/footer. Editing the html in FoxReplace is simpler that the old way.

Plus, I get to customize favicon, and shorten page title to save precious tab space, without installing a new addon.

My only difficulty with it is that Periodically Update URL doesn't seem to support "file:///". I have several firefox profiles and I keep them in line through the same user.js. Because I cannot set Update to a local file, I have to open up prefs.js of the profile I just changed, copy and paste the relevant entry to user.js. This is how I keep FoxReplace in all my profiles to the same setting. I wonder whether the lack of "file:///" is a bug, or an yet-supported feature.

Update: I used 0.16.1 when I wrote this review. Just like the dev said in his reply, 0.17.0b2 corrected the "file:///" bug! Thanks!

Thanks for your review. The issue you describe with the file:/// URL is fixed in the latest beta. If you want to try it, you can get it from https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/foxreplace/versions/

Mostly, but not always, does what I want Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I'm using this thing to replace American English spellings (I'm not saying American English is wrong, just that I'm not from the US and prefer reading text the way I'm used to) and this mostly lets me do that, but it's not perfect.

Currently, if I create a rule to replace "dialog" with "dialogue" it does it, but it also replaces any original "dialogue" with "dialogueue". To get around this I changed the rule making "dialog " to "dialogue " (note the space). However, this creates a problem with punctuation, because if text says "dialog." or "dialog," then it doesn't get replaced. This means I have to create extra rules to cover those instances.

I'm not really a programmer so I don't know how feasible a solution is, but maybe you could add some sort of wildcard character that to cover non-alphabet characters? So "dialog#" would work the same for "dialog ", "dialog," and "dialog." etc. Or perhaps make it so that it doesn't automatically put the replacing word when it's already there.

Furthermore, it doesn't allow for capitalisation - so if I make a rule changing "center" to "centre", it also changes "Center" to "centre", and to get around that I have to make two separate rules that use 'Match case'. Some way to automatically keep capitalisation would be handy.

Finally, I've noticed that loading times build up quite a bit - if I open a couple of Wikipedia pages full of text, it freezes up for a few seconds. This is likely because I have it set to work on page load, but it's either that or make it replace every few seconds, which is unnecessary. If I could have an option to replace once, a few seconds after loading, that would be perfect.

Thanks for your time.

Hi, thank you for the review. To solve your first issue you can use whole words (click the button to the left of the replace field). As for your other suggestions, I'll consider them for future releases.

Great Extension but some erorrs Rated 5 out of 5 stars

It's Great extension, but there is some errors in replacing HTML with "Input and Output" option of pages in vk.com. I use it for adding specific font color for some users in vk.com. When i use it - scripts on page didn't work. I checked, my replace string is not corrupt any scripts in html code. Plz check video of error to see better - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6I_i3W3rcw
If you will fix, it would be greatest extension ever! =)

LOVE IT Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This extension allows me to find and replace entire bodies of automatic emails in our training system. Each course code has it's own set of emails and the set can only be accessed on a single long webpage. It was a godsend when we changed our email address and every single instance needed to be updated. I was able to load each course code, click a button, then click save.

This saved me weeks of time! I now also use it when entire email bodies need to be replaced for several courses.
