Why was Flash Game Maximizer created?

Once upon a time in the land of Internet, long before the benevolent era of the Flash Game Maximizer, I was already an avid Flash Game Player (I use the capital "P" due to the sheer number of hours i wasted thus). It was, however, with much annoyance, and quite a bit of sadness as well, that I found my favorite games getting ever smaller and smaller as the number of pixies in my magic monitor increased. My poor aging eyes were filled with water and the aim of my magic mouse was no longer pwning the games. Oh pain and suffering, what is this pox upon the almighty face of The Great Firefox.

For some strange, hitherto unknown reason, the arcane mages, the mysterious makers of Flash Games, seem to insist on using very diminutive dimensions with which to display the fruits of their labor, despite the fact that most good people these days have plenty of mojo in their PCs to maintain a much larger window into the realm of Flash. Many have wondered why, few have lived to learn the answer...

It was thus I set forth on my epic adventure into the fabled land of Xul, where the sun of microsystems never sets and where the wicked never rest, hoping there to find some unknown, yet powerful magic, capable of banishing the curse of the sub-dimensions from the Realm of Flash. I Have since wandered far and wide in the wilderness of Xul, often aided in my quest by powerful incantations of the mystic language of Java, as I had to fight the many bugs and other evil things that dwell in the dark corners of these lands.

I can now, many moons later, proudly present to you the fruit of my adventurous hardships - All rise and behold in reverential awe the mighty power of the Flash Game Maximizer - The universal magic incantation that will forever banish the curse of small games from the domain of The Great Firefox.

Now we can all live happily ever after, secure in the knowledge that no matter how newfangled a monitor we may want to use, our Flash Games will never again be a strain on the eyes.

And THAT, my children, is the story of how the benevolent era of the Flash Game Maximizer came about - Now, off to bed with you, and don't let the Xul bugs bite...

What's next for Flash Game Maximizer

Below is a preliminary list of features and improvements that I might consider implementing in a future version of FGM. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me (privacy.lover[at]gmail.com) with further ideas and suggestions:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Improved full-screen support - Ideally I would like for FGM to have the ability to hide the remaining parts of the Firefox GUI when entering fullscreen, so as to remove the need for a seperate add-on for this purpose. Better options for how/when to switch into (and out of) full-screen mode might also be warranted.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Better URL handling - I would like to have support for saved links/bookmarks/shortcuts, so these will automatically maximize the Flash content. I may even be able to make it possible to manually write URL's (directly in the location-bar or when making a manual shortcut/bookmark) that will instruct FGM in what it should do (ie. maximize using which scale and other settings).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Better auto-sizing - I'm thinking along the lines of making a resize-mode that will choose only sizes that result in "nice" pixel-scaling (ie. like the currently manual selectable percentages, only automatically choosen to fit inside the current window).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* A better solution to the current "scrollbar-hack" (necessary to prevent Firefox from showing scrollbars when some Flash content is maximized - However, the current "hack" introduces margins which I would rather do without).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Various improvements to the parser - It could be a lot better at handling OBJECT elements. Possibly I may even get it to parse (some) script-injected sites (ie. look for Flash URLs inside embedded/linked scripts). I'm also considering the possibility of making the parser run in a separate thread, so as to prevent CPU-hogging during page-loads (which is currently addressed by the ability to switch off auto-parsing, but this isn't a very optimal solution). I have also considered changing the parser to do two separate passes, one during page-load that only detects the presence of EMBED and/or OBJECT elements (ie. to allow the button to be colored correctly at load-time), and another pass when the button is pressed (to find the actual bits of information necessary to maximize the content). Finally the parser could be better at handling "extra attribute data" (ie. data contained in non-standard attributes and elements which may be necessary for the content to work properly).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* A choice of "maximize methods", in order to improve the chance of one of these working with a given piece of "problematic content". As a very minimum I would like to introduce some kind of "fallback method" that may not support some of the "advanced features" of FGM (say fixed and aspect resizing), but one that would on the other hand be likely to work with the greatest amount of content out there (that is to say one that mimics the manual procedure for maximizing flash, which is simply to open the content URL directly in the browser).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* I may also, in some far, far away future, consider implementing certain features that aren't directly intended for Flash Games, but rather for Flash content in general. As such it's been suggested that I make FGM capable of handling pages with multiple content, which is to say changing the size of ALL embedded Flash content on a page at once (for sites using flash-thumbnails, where you might want bigger thumbnails etc.) I can imagine other things that one might want to do with Flash content

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Other fancy stuff I haven't thought of yet or can't be bothered to remember - Check here once in a while for updates...
