Great functionality, dismal performance Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I've used this extension for quite some time (I recall first finding it while on Firefox 1.5 or 2), and it's certainly an invaluable tool for not only web design, but whenever you might need to dig into source code — especially finding code added by Javascript, and for quickly locating elements in a mess of code thanks to "Inspect".

Currently, however, it is extremely problematic for me. It uses up way too much memory — with my usual session (5-15 tabs over one or two windows; usually towards 5), it takes up way too much memory — for the 15-tab case, 200 MB more in physical memory (yes, there's another margin of different in the pagefile!). It also tends to hang Firefox for up to 30s on page-load with 100% CPU usage. Given that this only began occurring on the last Firebug update (I think), and that this last update removed the visible featuring of turning Firebug on and off generally or for specific sites, I suspect this usage may be related to that. [I suppose that'd be more useful in a bug report, though.]

I'm still giving it a 4/5 since it always worked well for me before, I haven't tried the 1.3β yet but hopefully this should be fixed soon.

My solution, for now, is to keep a separate profile for web debugging and a shortcut with the options "-no-remote -profile " to open up a new instance in that profile when needed.

Must have web development tool Rated 5 out of 5 stars

If you're a web developer, the firebug is invaluable. It allows you to edit a webpage on the fly, while you can see the page changing as you edit the code.

It's a great time saver especially when you're troubleshooting because tt saves you from having to click the "Refresh" button after editing each line of code.

Great extension! It removes a huge headache from web development.

Occasionally it can cause side effects with JavaScript applications, so if things are behaving strangely disable Firebug and try again.

3 Stars Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Revising my review, lowering to 3 stars. You'll get a 5 once more of the major glitches (some of which can accurately be described as "catastrophic") are ironed out.

Web Developer Essential Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Firebug is an extensive web developer add-on. It has many useful features but our favourite is the on-the-fly editing. This allows for the code of a webpage to be editable in Firefox itself. The webpage will change locally as you make any changes to the code.

It also let’s you do this with CSS, Scripts, DOM and also has tools for analyising the speed of a website.

Essential for web developers.
